This invention relates to coin-apparatus pum It is the object of this invention to provide a coin-controlled, liquid-dispensing appara-tus.
It is a further object of the invention to provide the dispensing of liquid by a single movement of an operating handle which serves to deposit the coin, to make a record of the transaction and to dispense the liquid, so that the container for the liquid into which it is to be dispensed may be held by the other hand of the operator. My invention is particularly designed for and adapted to the use of all dispensers of liquid and for cigar lighters.
It is still another object to provide an apparatus in which a coin will serve to connect the operating apparatus with the dispensing c aparatus after which the coin is deposited in its receptacle and the apparatus continues to operate for dispensing the liquid, such apparatus being associated with the mechanism to prevent dispensing more than a predetermined amount of liquid for a given payment.

This base reservoir 1 has a laterally extending base plate 6 for supporting a coin box 7 which is bolted by the transverse bolt 8 to the pump housing 9, which is mounted on the top of the reservoir 1 by any suitable attaching mechanism, such as the screws 10.
Mounted on the upper side of the pump housing 9 and forming a closure in the top of the coin boX 7 is the operating mechanism casing 11 attached to the pump housing casing 9 by the screws 12.
Thus the apparatus is assembled in four units; a reservoir and coin box support unit; a coin box; a pump housing carrying the pump mechanism; and the operating mechanism casing.
Operating mechanism This mechanism is operated by thehandle 13 which is pinned by the pin 14 to ashaft 15 that is journaled in the detachable end 16 of the barrel-shaped operating mechanism casing 11. This detachable end 16 is connected to the barrel of the casing by the screw bolts 17. The shaft 15 is expanded within the casing 11 into a hollow barrel of three different dimensions. The barrel of the first and smallest dimensions is designated 18. It carries around it the return spring 19 one end of which is attached to the barrel 18 by the set screw 20 and the other end is inserted within an aperture in the detachable end plate 16, as at 21. The set screw 20 serves to hold in position the rotatable coin cylinder 22, hereinafter described. The second diameter of the barrel mounted on the shaft 15 is that portion receiving the coin and is designated 23, having a slot therethrough designated at the top as 24 and at the bottom a larger slot designated 25. These slots are adapted to be in alignment with the slot 26 of the sleeve 27 which surrounds the barrel 23 when the parts are in the in- The third dimension of the barrel of which two parts Nos. 18 and 23 have already been described, is the barrel portion designated 29, the end of which abuts against the pump operating sleeve 30. This sleeve carries a projecting pin 31 and roller 32 which engages with the transverse member 34 on the head of the pump plunger 35.
Returning to the sleeve 18, it will be noted that the set screw 20 has a projection 36 extending into a groove 37 of a cylinder member 38 which is located within the barrel 18. This member 38 has an intermediate barrel portion 39 which is connected to the other end of the coin cylinder barrel portion 22. It has a slot 40 therethrough aligned with the other slots when in an at-rest position. It carries locking pin 41 and is provided with a cut away cam surface 42. The pin 41 and the cam surface 42 are adapted to cooperate with the spring pressed pawl 43, which is pivoted at 44 upon the barrel sleeve 23 and is held in outward position by the spring 45. It works in. a slot 46 in the sleeve 23 transversely of the rotation of the several parts consisting of the concentric sleeves.
This pawl 43 normally extends through a slot 47 in the sleeve 27. The heel of this pawl is engaged by the cam surface 48 of the sleeve 27. This sleeve 27 is provided with a slot 49 which registers with a coin deposit slot 50 in the casing barrel 11. The slots 25 and 40 are adapted also to register with these deposit slots 49 and 50 during the depositing operation,'as will be hereinafter described.
The barrel of the coin cylinder 22 is eX- tended into a shaft 51 to. which is pinned by the pin 52 the pump operating sleeve 30. To this sleeve 30 is connected one end of a spring 53, the other end of which is connected to the barrel 22 so that the pump operating sleeve is returned to its initial position when the brake mechanism hereinafter described is released.
Brake mechanism- This brake mechanism consists of a V- shaped groove 54 formed in the exterior of the pump operating sleeve 30. The groove is engaged with a correspondingly shaped I arcuate brake member 55, which is r'otatably Method of operation of the operating mechanism When a coin 61 is inserted through the slots 28, 26, 24, 40 and 25 until it rests upon the inside of the sleeve 27, then the handle 13 can be pulled toward the operator. When this is done the sleeves 18 and 23 are rotated which move the cylinder 39 with the coin 61, the coin serves to interconnect the two in a clockwise direction. This serves to move the nose of the pawl 43 over the pin 41.
By the time the coin 61 arrives opposite the slots 49 and 50 it is necessary to release its jammed condition between the cylinder 39 and the operating sleeve 23. This is effected by the engagement of the heel of the pawl 43 with the cam surface 48 of the sleeve 27, which is stationary, forcing the nose of the cam over the pin 41 rotating the cylinder 39 about .0001 of an inch which releases the coin 61 and permits it to drop by gravity through the openings 49 and 50 through the coin box 7, through the open top of the coin box.
Thus the handle 13 rotates the operating cylinder 23 which is connected by the coin 61 to the coin cylinder 22 which in turn is connected to the pump operating sleeve 30. After the coin drops out, connection having been made between the coin cylinder and the handle operating cylinder by the pawl 43 which is held in position by the sleeve 27 which encloses the pawl 43, the pump operating sleeve 30 which is pinned to the coin cylinder 22 travels with it thereby depressing the plunger of pump 35. If the handle should be released at any time during the down stroke and then moved back slightly in an effort to move the pump plunger 35 up and down to eject more than the desired quantity of fluid the brake mechanism, consisting of the braking member 55 working in the groove 54, would hold the parts in stationary position as to any backward movement until the stroke has been completed downwardly to its end and the handle returned to its initial position shortly before which the cam would strike the nose 59 of the pawl 58 and declutch the clutch spring 55 against the action of the spring 57 from the groove 54 of the pump operating cylinder 30.
Then there is provided the following parts: a handle operating cylinder; a coin cylinder adapted to be attached to the operating cylinder by a coin; a pawl connection between said cylinders maintained in position by a sleeve within the cylindrical casing; and a pump operating sleeve with. brake mechanism to prevent the backward movement of the parts.
In the sequence of operations the operating cylinder is first moved by the handle 13 after the coin has been deposited, the
coin is then released and deposited and thereafter begins the ejection of fluid having already recorded the stroke on a counting mechanism, as will be hereinafter described.
The handle 18 is prevented from moving too far forwardly and backwardly by the stop 91.
The handle is prevented from moving forwardly prior to the insertion of the coin 61 by the engagement of the nose of the pawl 43 with the locking pin 41. Upon the insertion of the coin, the coin cylinder 39 can turn a short distance due to the enlargement of slot in the sleeve 23 so as to get the pin 41 beneath the hook of the pawl 43. Thus the instant the coin is inserted and the handle starts to move the locking pin 4:1 is removed and the apparatus can start to operate.
Pwnp mechanism Theconnection between the iston rod v known as the plunger, and the piston 67 is a broken connection in that a spring 69 is interposed therebetween permitting relative movement downwardly of the plunger 85 before its end engages the top of the piston 67 for moving the piston down a predetermined distance.
This movement of the piston is resisted by the spring 7 O 'ithin the cylinder 68. The
cylinder is provided with an inlet port 71 controlled by the ball check 72 and an outlet port 78 controlled by the ball check 7a which is seated by the spring 75. The out let port communicates with the discharge pipe 76 and is adapted to discharge into the swinging return pipe 77 that is adapted to take the drip. This pipe is pushed outside against the spring tension 78 when the operator places his receptacle to be filled beneath the spout of pipe 76.
Jpon the release of the handle it returns to its initial position as described which permits the spring and the spring 69 to respectively return the piston 67 and the plunger piston rod 35 to the initial positions.
Counter mechanism The apparatus is so arranged by use of the spring 69 that the plunger 85 may descend a certain distance in a given time for the operation of the counter mechanism before the ejection of the fluid starts.
A counter 79 is mounted on the casing as at 80. The counter arm 81 is controlled by the rocker arm 82 pivoted at 83. This arm 82 terminates in a stop 8 l against which rests the lower end of a pivoted catch 85 which is pivoted on the arm at 86. The projecting lug 87 on the plunger 85 has a lower round surface 88. As the plunger moves downwardly it engages with the laterally projecting shoulder on the swinging member 85 which causes the swinging member 85 to engage the stop 8st thereby actuating the lever 82 and the counter 79. Due to the arcuate movement laterally of the members 89 and 85 traveling with the lever 82 the stop 89 passes by one side of the stop 87 slipping oii at the curved surface 88 so that the counter mechanism can return on the influence of the spring 90 to its initial position while the pump operation is completed.
Thus there is the sequence of operation of inserting the coin, moving the handle, depositing the coin, recording the transaction and ejecting the fluid.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention and within the scope of my claims such modifications as may be fairly comprehended within such claims and invention due to necessary modifications to adapt my in vention to varying conditions of use and to varying purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination in a liquid dispensing apparatus, operated means, ,an operating means, means comprising a stationary sleeve and a pawl adapted to connect the operating means to the dispensing means when a coin is inserted into said operating means and means to release said coin but not to release the connection between operating means and the liquid dispensing means until the dispensing operation is completed.
2. In combination in a liquid dispensing apparatus, an operated means, an operating means, means comprising a stationary sleeve and a pawl adapted to connect the operating means to the operated means when a coin is inserted into said means and means to prevent the operated means being operated more than a single stroke by the backward movement of the handle intermediate of completion of the operation of the dis pensing apparatus.
3. In combination in a liquid dispensing apparatus, operated means, operating means therefor, said means having coin-receiving slots therein, and means for forming an operative connection between the operating means and the operated means, said means comprising a pawl pivoted to the operating means and adapted when the slots are in alignment and no coin therein to prevent the operation of the operating means, and adapted when the coin is in said slots to be forced into operative position by the operation of the operating means.
4. In combination in a liquid dispensing apparatus, an operated means, a handleoperated means for operating said operated means normally disconnected therefrom, said means having coin-receiving slots therein, interconnecting means between the operated means and the handle-operated means adapted when no coin is in said slots to prevent the rotation of the handle-operated means, and when a coin is in said slots to interlock said first two means so that they rotate in unison, means to cause the ejection of the coin, and means to prevent at all stages of its operation reverse operation.
5. In combination, a plurality of concentric cylinders having coin-receiving slots therethrough certain of which slots in inoperative position of the cylinders are in alignment and others of which in another position of the cylinders are in alignment, means operable by the insertion of a coin in the first group of slots to cause the concentric cylinders to travel together to permit ejection of the coin through the last group of slots, means for locking together said cylinders for a continuation of their movement after the ejection of the coin, and yielding means for returning said cylinders to their initial position after the completion of a cycle of operation.
6. In combination, a plurality of concentric cylinders having coin-receiving slots therethrough certain of which slots in inoperative position of the cylinders are in alignment and others of which in another position of the cylinders are in alignment, means operable to cause a portion of the concentric cylinders to travel together to cause the ejection of the coin through the last-named group of slots, means for locking together a portion of said cylinders for a continuation of their movement after the ejection of the coin, yielding means for returning said cylinders to their initial positon after the completion of a cycle of operation, and means for preventing the return of a portion of said cylinders prior to the completion of the operation, said returning means of said cylinders being independent one of the other.
7. In combination in a coin-operated liquid-dispensing apparatus of a casing having a coin slot therethrough, a coin retaining sleeve therein having a slot, a slotted coin cylinder therein, normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, an operating cylinder therein having coin slots normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, said operating cylinder and coin cylinder being adapted to be connected by the coin while held in position by the sleevein the casing and means for rotating the operating cylinder in order to operate the coin cylinder through said coin, said coin-retaining sleeve having a coin-receiving slot and a coin-discharge slot.
8. In combination in a coin-operated, liquid-dispensing apparatus of a casing having a coin slot therethrough, a coin retaining sleeve therein, a slotted coin cylinder therein, normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, an operating cylinder therein having coin slots normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, said operating cylinder and coin cylinder being adapted to be connected by the coin while held in position by the sleeve in the casing, means for rotating the operating cylinder in order to operate the coin cylinder through said coin, said coin-retaining sleeve having a coin-receiving slot and a coin-discharging slot and means on the operating cylinder for connecting it upon rotation with the coin cylinder to maintain interconnection therebetween after the coin has been rotated therewith a portion of the stroke.
9. In combination in a coin-operated, liquid-dispensing apparatus of a casing having a coin slot therethrough, a coin retaining sleeve therein, a slotted coin cylinder therein, normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, an operating cylinder therein having coin slots normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, said operating cylinder and coin cylinder being adapted to be connected by the coin while held in position by the sleeve in the casing, means for rotating the operating cylinder in order to'operate the coin cylinder through said coin, means on the operating cylinder for connecting it upon rotating with the coin cylinder to maintain interconnection therebetween after the coin has-been rotated therewith a portion of the stroke and means to release the coin for its ejection from said casing'and through said sleeve after a partial rotation with the coin cylinder.
10. In combination in a coin-operated, liquid-dispensing apparatus of a casing having a coin slot therethrough, a coin retaining sleeve therein, a slotted coin cylinder therein, normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, an operating cylinder therein having coin slots normally in line with the upper slot of the casing, said operating cylinder and coin cylinder being adapted to be connected by the coin while held in position by the sleeve in the casing, means for rotating the operating cylinder in order to operate the coin cylinder through said coin, means on the operating cylinder for connecting it upon rota-ting with the coin cylinder to maintain interconnection therebetween after the coin has been rotated therewith a portion of the stroke, and means to release the coin for its ejection from said casing and through said sleeve after a partial rotation with the coin cylinder said means comprising a pawl operated by the coin-retaining sleeve for loosening the connection between said coin, coin cylinder and operating cylinder prior to ejection.
11. In combination, a slotted casing hav ing a vertically disposed slot and a laterally disposed slot, a stationary sleeve within said casing having corresponding slots and a third slot for receiving a pawl, said slot having a cam edge -for engaging the pawl, a concentric slotted cylinder within said sleeve operated by a handle, one of the slots therein coinciding with the slots in the casing and sleeves, a solid coin cylinder within said operating cylinder having a cut-away portion with a locking pin therein and a slot coinciding with the first-mentioned slots and also with the bottom slots in said operating cylinder and a pawl yieldingly pressed outwardly carried by said operating cylinder adapted to engage the locking pin on the coin cylinder.
12. In combination, a slotted casing having a vertically disposed slot and a laterally disposed slot, a stationary sleeve within said casing having corresponding slots and a third slot for receiving a pawl, said slot having a cam edge for engaging the pawl, a concentric slotted operating cylinder within said sleeve operated by a handle, one of the slots therein coinciding with the slots in the casing and sleeves, a solid coin cylinder within said operating cylinder having a cut-away portion with a locking pin therein and a slot coinciding with the first-mentioned slots and also with the bottom slots in said operating cylinder, a pawl yieldingly pressed outwardly carried by said operating cylinder adapted to engage the locking pin on the coin cylinder and to be pressed into the slot of the slotted cylinder and power transmission means mounted on said coin cylinder.
13. In combination, a slotted casing having a vertically disposed slot and a laterally disposed slot, a stationary sleeve within said casing having corresponding slots and a third slot for receiving a pawl, said slot having a cam edge for engaging the pawl, a concentric slotted operating cylinder within said sleeve, one of the slots therein coinciding with the slots in the casing and sleeves, a solid coin cylinderv within said operating cylinder having a cut-away portion with a locking, pin therein and a slot coinciding with the first-mentioned slots and also with the bottom slots in said operating cylinder, a pawl yieldingly pressed outwardly carried by said operating cylinder adapted to en- 14. In combination, a slotted casing having a vertically disposed slot and a laterally disposed. slot, a stationary sleeve within said casing having corresponding slots and a third slot for receiving a pawl, said slot having a cam edge for engaging the pawl, a concentric slotted operating cylinder within said sleeve, one of the slots therein coinciding with the slots in the casing and sleeves, a solid coin cylinder within said operating cylinder having a cut-away portion with a locking pin therein and a slot coinciding with the first-mentioned slots and also with the bottom slots in said operating cylinder, a pawl yieldingly pressed outwardly carried by said operating cylinder adapted to engage the locking pin on the coin cylinder, power transmitting means mounted on said coin cylinder, brake means engaging said power transmitting means to prevent reverse movement and means at the end of a stroke of said operating means for rendering the braking means inoperative.
15. In combination, a plurality of concentric cylinders having coin-receiving slots therethrough, certain of which slots in inoperative position of the cylinders are in alignment and other of which slots are in alignment in another position of the cylinders and means operable by the insertion of the coin in the first group of slots to cause a portion of the concentric cylinders to travel together to permit the ejection of the coin through the last group of slots.
16. In combination, a plurality of concentric cylinders having coin-receiving slots therethrough, certain of which slots in inoperative position of the cylinders are in alignment and other of which slots are in alignment in another position of the cylinders, means operable by the insertion of the coin in the first group of slots to cause the concentric cylinders to travel together to cause the ejection of the coin through the last group of slots and means for locking together said cylinders for a continuation of their movement after the ejection of the coin.
17. In combination, a plurality of concentric cylinders having coin-receiving slots therethrough, certain of which slots in inoperative position of the cylinders are in alignment and other of which slots are in alignment in another position of the cylinders, means operable by the insertion of the coin in the first group of slots to cause the concentric cylinders to travel together to permit the ejection of the coin through the last group of slots, means for locking together said cylinders for a continuation of their l l O movement after the ejection of the coin, yielding means for returning said cylinders to their initial position after the completion of a cycle of operations and means for preventing the return of a portion of said cylinders prior to the completion of the cycle of operations.
18. In a coin-operated machine, a support member, an operating member, an operated 6 member, certain of said members having coin-receiving slots therein, and means on the operating member to engage the support member and the operated member to prevent operation when the coin is not in the slots and operated by the support member to engage and operate the operated member after a coin has been placed in the slot.
19. In a coin-operated machine, a support member, an operating member, an op- 0 erated member, certain of said members having coin-receiving slots therein, and a pawl on one member adapted to engage the other members to prevent operation when no coin is in the slots and adapted to engage the members to cause the operation of the operated member by the operating member when the coin is in the slots.
20. In a coin-operated machine, a support member having a slot terminating in a cam surface, an operated member having a slot therein with a shoulder at one end of the slot, an operating member having a slot therein, certain of said members having coin-receiving slots therein, and locking means in said first-named slots adapted to lock the operating member against operation when no coin is in the coin slots and adapted to be placed in engagement with the shoulder by the cam surface when a coin is in the coin slots for operating the operated member.
21. In a coin-operated machine, a support member having a slot terminating in a cam surface, an operated member having a slot terminating in a shoulder, an operating member having a slot therein, certain of said members having coin slots therein, and a locking pawl pivoted to the operating member in the slot therein adapted to engage the other members and lock the operating member against operation when no cam is in the coin slots and adapted to be placed in engagement with the shoulder by the cam surface when a coin is in the coin slots for bi; operating-the operated member.
