This invention relates to advertising or other display apparatus of the class in which the matter displayed is arranged at intervals, as in panels, lengthwise of the travel of and on a support driven from an electric motor. The object of the invention is to provide for driving the system comprising the said support, as a belt, and the motor, in such manner that the motion will be alternately fast and slow, for example, so that each slow period will afford opportunity to view a subject presented on the support and vthe succeeding fast period will correspond to the withdrawal of such subject and presentation of the next, that is, the change from one subject to the next.

In a case 1 open at the front (Fig. 4) are an upper and lower series of guides 2, at least one (2a) of which may be a revoluble roller, around which is trained (Fig. 1) an endless belt 3, here forming the said support and having displayed thereon, as within the panels 4 (Fig. 4) arranged in a series lengthwise thereof", the subjects to be viewed. This support has an opening or other interruption 5 therein for each subject displayed thereon, as one such opening between each two subjects.
' 6 is a motor whose rotary element 7, through a belt 8, drives a sheave 9 which through speed-reducing gearing 10 drives a shaft 11-said sheave, gearing and shaft being journaled in a bracket 12-, the shaft having va belt-and-pulley connection 13 with roller 2a.
The source of electrical energy for driving the motor is indicated at 14, the wiring forming with said motor and source the necessary circuit being indicated at 15. In this circuit, which I term the main circuit, let 16 represent a resistance, as an electric lamp. Connected to the circuit 15 between the Serial No. 515,724.
motor and resistance on the one hand and the resistance and energy source 14 on the other are two wires 17 having terminals 18 and 19, the latter of which is a spring blade normally urged by its own elastic force tof ward the terminal I8 but held therefrom by the belt 3 so long as an opening 5 therein does not coincide therewith. One of these wires contains a resistance 20. The wiring 17, terminals 18 and 19 and resistance 2O form a shunt.
On closing a switch 21 shown in the main circuit the motor will be driven and drive the belt 3 through the described transmission means connecting the motor shaft and the roller 2a. The openings 5 are assumed to be all in a path tracked by the spring terminal 19 as the belt moves relatively to said terminal, wherefore this terminal is alternately repressed out of contact with terminal 18 and allowed to contact therewith according as an opening 5 or the belt itself between two such openings opposes terminal 19. When the terminal 19 is thus out of contact with terminal 18, the shunt being then open and resistance 20 cut out, the motor drives the belt at slow speed; when the contact is established, the shunt being then closed and resistance 2O operative, the motor drives the belt at a faster speed.
Thus during alternate periods, or when the subjects are presented to view, the belt may be made to move slowly, but when a change from one subject to the next is to occur, in the remaining periods, the belt moves more quickly. The ratio of the speeds in the rtwo Aperiods depends on the ratio of the resistances, and for the purpose of readily altering the latter ratio I prefer to use ordinary electric lamps, as stated, removable from sockets 22.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is:
l. In combination, driven means including a travelling support having the subjects to be displayed arranged thereon in a series extending lengthwise of the travel of the support, electro-motive means to drive the driven means including an electric circuit and a motor there-in having a driving connection with the driven means, and a shunt having Y, extending lengthwise of the travel of the supn p a break therein,said support having means,
arranged in succession lengthwise of its travel and one for each subject displayed thereon, to causealternate closing and opening of the break.
2. In combination, driven meansl including a travelling'support having the vsubjects to be displayed arranged thereon in a series port and also having interruptions in a surface thereof also arranged lengthwise of itsv travel, lelectro-motive means to drive vthe driven means including van electric circuit and a motor therein liavinga driving connection with the driven means, and arshunt having a break therein and one terminal at the break elastic andnormally-iirgedagainst the sup- Y portfin the path "ofV said interruptionsand to enter an interruption when the same registers therewith and thus clear the other terminal and to be moved into contact with lsaid other terminal by the support when an interruption is out of registry therewith.
3. In combination-,- driven means including a travellingvsupport having the Ysubjects to be. displayed arranged thereon in a series vextending* lengthwise of the travel of the support, electro-motive means to drive the drivennieans including an electricfvcircuit and a motor thereinhaving a driving connection with the driven-means, and a shunt having a breakthereimisaid circuit and shunt having removable resistancesl therein and said support having means, arranged--insuccession lengthwise ofvits `travel and` one for f each Vsubject displayed thereon, to cause alternate closing andlopening of 'theV break.
