Another object of the invention, generally stated, is to provide highly efficient means of the character specified by which the platen may be readily detached and removed, when desired, without `removing the line spacing wheel and platen clutch from the carriage.

To the above land other ends'which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of' parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the accompanying claims.

l have shown my invention in the present instance incorporatedin the No. 6 Reming-I ton-Noiseless machine, in which said inven tion may be readily embodied without modi fying, or materially modifying, the existing structural features of said machine. It should be'understood, however, that the invention isnot limited to embodiment in such machine but may be employed in typewriting and like machines generally, wherever found available.
' The platen clutch disclosed herein is like that now in use in the #6 Remington-Noiseless machine and is disclosed in the patent to George Gr. Going, No. 1,595,463, dated Aug. 10, 1926.
In the Remington-Noiseless machine, more so than in other typewriting machines, it is highly essential, where a removable platen is employed, 'that its replacement, or the replacement of a substitute platen, in the machine shall be effected with the utmost eX- actness, since the, slightest variation in the position of the platen in the carriage may operate to a distinct disadvantage by reason of the pressure imprint of the type actions employed in this machine. lt is one of the objects of the present invention, therefore, to provide means for eecting a ready removal and replacement or .Substituting @t a platen,
in such a manner that the replaced or substituted platen will be firmly and accurately seated in the carriage as when originally installed at the factory and will be as firmly and accurately connected with its associated parts asin theoriginal facto-ry installation.

This pivotal connection between the spindle-23 and the finger piece 31 connects the two, so that the finger piece is effective, when in operative position, to turn the spindle in the hub 13 and also enables the linger piece to be turned on its pivots 30 from its operative position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3to theinoperatlve position, shown ink full lines in the same ligure. Whenthe finger piece is inthe expanded, dottedeline positionV it may be employed to'turn the spindle 23 independently of the platen but when not in use may be folded to a compact position adjacent to and parallel with the finger wheel 20. By reason of this folding of the finger piece 31, the machine may be received in the standard packing case now employed to ship the machines. Y Y
ln order to retain the linger piece 31 against accidental displacement from either'of the said positions to which it may be shifted, I haveprovided-a spring washer 32 that bears against one pair of flat faces or another 'ofthe' square pivots-3 0 andthus retains the fingery piece in eitherl of the said pivotal positions to which 'it may be shifted. An outerretaining member 33 has -a reduced shank 34 which eX tends through the central opening in the spring washer and is receivedin the central recess 35 in the member 27, and bears against said member and holds it against Vthe shoulder v36k on the spindle 23, formedat the junction platen is acollar 37 held-fast to thespindle bya pin 38. vThis is-toenable the spindle when disconnected at its innerA end to receive a-limited outward movement in the platen .A linger wheel 20-has a hub 21 that sur-- roundsthe hub'13 and is secured theretobyY two set screws 22. The inner end of theV spindle 23 is received a chuck orxclamping member, designated asl a whole by the reference numeral 43. The

The outerA surface of each jaw 49jis 4beveled at 51 to provide a cam face adapted v to coact with a corresponding cam face 52 onthe interior of the left-hand platen head 53, secured with a drive it in the left-hand end of the platen shell 9. The platen head 53also has a cylindrical bearing portion 54 in which a disk-like portion 55 on the chuck is received, supported and adapted to slide longitudinally of the platen. This platen head also has a cylin drical bearing portion 56 in which the outer segmental surfaces 57 of the chuck jaws are received and adapted to slide. In order to prevent the chuck 43 from turning relatively to the platen head 53 I provide a pin 58 that projects to the left from the disk-like portion 55 of the chuck, and is received and slides-in a bearing hole 59 that extends through the platen head.
The platen lhead 53 is further provided with a cylindrical, reduced bearing portion or hollow trunnion 60 adapted to be received in the bearing bushing 5 secured to the end plate 3 ofthe carriage. 'The inner surface ofthe bearing portion 60 receives, when the parts are assembled, a cylindrical bearing portion 61 on the member 46, whereas a larger bearing portion or trunnion 62 on the member re- Vceives a bearing in the Vbushing 5. Thus it will be seenthat the'platen and the` member 46 are both supported and aligned in the-same bearing 5. I

In describing the platen clutch mechanism I will only brieiiyvrefer toit, so that a sufficient understanding of it may be arrived at forthe purposes ofetliepresent invention.
'Y i The inner side of the line spacing wheel or ring 47 iS provided Wit-h llleteeth'with which radially sliding pawls 64 are adapted to engage. These pawls slide in radial grooves or ways 65 in the member 46. A coiled compression spring 66 coacts with all three pawls and tends to disengage them from the teeth 63. rIhree plungers 67 are guided in slots 68 in a block 69 held with a drive Vfit in av recess in the center of the member 46. These plungers also move in registering ways 70 in a spindle 71 in which are also contained expansion springs 72 which force the plungers to the right and cause the cam faces 73 thereon to force the pawls 64 against the force of the spring 66 into engagementy with the teeth 63, thus locking the line spacing wheel and the platen to turn together.
A finger wheel 74 is connected to the spindle 71 by a set screw 74a, whereas the spindle has a splined connection with a bearing sleeve 75 riveted to a cover plate 76 which in turn is fixed to the member 46 by screws 77. rlhe inner end of the spindle 71 carries a ring 78 that overlaps the plungers 67 and moves them to the left to release the clutch pawls when the linger wheel 74 is pulled to the left.
A bracket 79 secured to the carriage coacts with the bearing sleeve 75 to provide additional support therefor. A collar 80 surrounds said bearing sleeve 'inside the upright arm of the bracket 79, and bears at one edge against said arm. A set screw 81 holds the collar in place. The function'of this collar is to prevent the part 46, and the various members connected thereto, from being withdrawn from' the supports 5 and 79 when the platen isv detached therefrom, as shown'in Fig. 5.
From what has been said it will be understood that when the platen clutch is released, by pullingout onvthe finger wheel 74, the platen may be turned by either of the finger wheels 2O or 74 independently of the line spacing wheel 47, which at this time is held against movement with the platen by the usual spring-pressed roller detent 82. When, however, the clutch is closed the line spacing Wheel and platen are locked to turn together. Now in order to detach the platen, the finger piece 31 is irst shifted to effective posit-ion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. y It is then turned in an anti-clockwise direction, as the parts are viewed from the right-hand end'of the platen. The effect of this is to los ' l43sothatits jaws 49 may spring away and Y allowed to'remain yon the carriage, but whichl be releasedjfrom clamping engagement with the parts 48 with which they were forced by the camming action vexerted on the jaws by the' cam 52 onthe platen head 53.
The platenis mounted in placev by reversing the operations referred to above. When a threaded connection zis` effected between vthe members 39y and 46 a tightening of such connection causes the jaws ofthe Vchuck tof-bear with-force on the part 48, due to the ca-Imning action on the jaws 49 of the cam face 52. Thisresults not only in firmly clamping the connected parts together, but in properly centering and .firmly holding the platen againstl displacement relatively to the bearings on the carriage and the parts which are are-'to vbe connected with the platen, such as theline spacing wheel and platen clutch.

The combination of a carriage having end plates, a cylindrical platen, bearings for the platen in said end plates, one of said bearings being a cylindrical bearing in which a bearing member on the platen is received and removed by an endwise displacement of the platen, the other bearing being formed by an open-ended slot from which a bearing member on the platen is ldisplaced endWise before the platen hub can be lifted out of the open-ended slot, a tapered-bearing sleeve that surrounds a hub of the platen and when the platen is in place receives a bearing in the open-ended slot and prevents the said hub from being lifted through the open mouth of the bearing, and releasable means for holding the platen against endwise displacement in its bearings.

The combination of a platen having a h'ub, a carriage having end plates, a line spacing Wheel carried by and permanently mounted for rotative movement on one of said end plates, bearings for the platen in said end plates, one of said bearings being a cylindrical bearing in which a bearing member on the platen is received and removed by an endwise movement of the platen, the other bearing being formed by an openended slot from which a bearing member on the platen is displaced endWise before the platen hub can be lifted out of the openended slot, a finger piece carried by the platen, and means controlled thereby for holding the platen against endwise displacement in its bearings and for detaehably connecting the platen to said line spacing Wheel.
