PATENT OFFICE mmir. cooonmn', or wILxEs-Bmmi, Ann oscan r. noss, or mes'ron, PENN- SYLVANIA, ASSIGNOBS '10, WILKES-BARBIE CAN COMPANY, 0F WILKES-BARREL PENNSYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF'PENNSYLVA NIA VASE * Application filed November 2, 1928. Serial No. 316,777.
This invention relates to a vase designed primarily. for' --use in cemeteries, gardens, and the like, one of the objects'being to provide a vase the body or container portion 5 of which has a supporting stem detachably connected thereto in a new and novel man ner whereby to facilitate shipment of the vase and also to permit vases and their supporting stems to be interchanged readily. 0 A further object is'to provide a device. of
this type which is inex ensive and the supporting means of whic will serve to hold the base firmly in any position desired upon or close to the round where it will not fall over or be readily displaced.
With the foregoingand other objects in view. which will appear as the description proceeds 1 the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in. the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention'herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. y In the accompanying drawings the pre ferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings,
Figure 1 is an, elevation of the device, a portion thereof being broken away to show, in section, the interfitting portions of the body and holder.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the body and holder of the vase. 1 l
5 Figure 3 is a perspective view of the holder. i t
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates av vase of any suitable size and configuration. It is preferably formed of sheet metal and may be suitably ornamented. This vase, in the form shown, is tapered downwardly toward its base and has a bottom in the form ofa disk 2 provided with an annular flange 3. This flange is fitted snugly inthe end of the body and is clinched or otherwise held thereto. In the recess defined by the flange 3 is formed an annular rib '5 pressed inwardl from the flange and this rib cooperates wit The holder is formed preferably of a length of stiff wire bent to provide an elongated'stem 7 one end of which is extended radially as at 8 and merges into a split ring 9'concentric with the longitudinal axis of the stem. The material of which the stem and its ring are formed is preferably resilient. The diameter of the split ring or spring loop 9 is slightly greater than the inner diameter of the rib 5. Thus by inserting the split ring into the lower end portion of the space defined by the flange 3v and then forcing the ring toward the bottom 2, said rib 5. After the ring passes the rib it-will expand into the groove 6, thereby frictionally engaging the flange '3 above the rib 5 and holding thebody l secured to the stem 7 The stem can be forced downwardly into the ground so. as to support the body 1 on 'ring will be contracted by contact with the the surface of the ground or at any desired distance thereabove. can be made of any length desired.
' -When shipping the vase the stem can be removed by exerting a suflicient pull thereon to cause the ring 9 to contract andwithdraw from the groove 6. Said stem can then be placed in the body of the vase and the entire article Wrapped and shipped.
If a long stem is employed and it is not desired to remove the same from the ground every time the vase is to be handled, said stem can be left in the ground and the vase can be forced ofl' of the ring 9 Whenever it is desired to handle it for any purpose.
' Thereafter the vase can be returned to prop- Obviously the stem 7 er or vase, having a flat bottom portion adapted to constitute keeper means for a re- "leasable prong device. The said prong device is formed by a single piece of spring wire which is bent at one end as indicated at 8 and 9 to .provide an annular metallic right angles to the portion 8-9 to provide a relatively long prong 7 for entering the ground or other surface.
What is claimed is:
1. In a flower holder or vase, a metal receptacle, a releasable prong device comprising an annular meta lic spring member terminating at one end in a portion bent radially to and extending inwardly from the annular portion to a point adjacent the centre of the annular member and lying substantially in the plane thereof, said radial portion terminating in a relatively long prong bent to extend at right angles to the radial portion and annulus, and a flange integral with said receptacle and projecting below the bottom thereof for releasably receiving and supporting said annular spring member under tension whereby said prong will extend downwardly from substantially the centre of the receptacle.
2. In a flower holder or vase, a metal receptacle, a releasable prong device comprising an annular metallic spring member terminating at one end in a portlon bent radially to and extending inwardly from the annular portion to a point adjacent the centre of the annular member and lying substantially in the plane thereof, said radial portion terminating in a relatively long prong bent to extend at right angles'to the radial portion and annulus, said annular, radial and prong portions being formed from a single piece of wire of the same gauge, and a flange integral with said receptacle and projecting below the bottom thereof for releasably receiving and supporting said annular spring member under tension whereby said prong will extend downwardly from substantially the centre of the receptacle.
3. In a flower holder or vase, a metal receptacle, adetachable prong device comprlslng a singlepiece of spring wire bent to provide an annular spring loop and hav ing a prong device bent at right angles to the loop and connected therewith and extending longitudinally from the axis of the loop, and means on the lower end of the receptacle for providing a keeper recess to receive the annular spring loop portion of the releasable prong device.
- In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures.
