My invention is concerned with window awnings, and is designed to produce an awn-' ing that can be more readily put up in the spring and taken down in the fall than has been possible with awnings as heretofore constructed.

The present application is an enforced division of my application No. 484,055, filed September 24, 1930.

To the above-noted end, it consists of a novel securing means on the window casing for holding the rod in the top of the awning in place.

To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings, in which the same ref erence characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of Which,-

The awning body 11 may be of the cus tomary design, and is provided with a frame secured in the bottom thereof and with the rod 13 secured in the top thereof, in the customary manner.

To detachably secure the rod 13, and

thereby the awning proper in place, I employ clamping mechanism, best shown in Figs. 2 to 5, which consists of the preferably rectangular base piece 25 secured to the window casing by the screw 26 passed through the aperture formed in the center of the base plate for that purpose. The base plate is provided at one end with the outwardly projecting lug 27, which preferably is somewhat hook-shaped, as shown in Fig. 4, and at the other side I provide the threaded aperture 28. The clamping mechanism proper consists of the rear member 29, which is preferably of the shape shown and may have on the lower end the pair of hooks 30 from which are suspended Serial No. 505,359.

the pulleys 31 through which the cords (not shown) by which the awning is raised and lowered are passed in the customary manner. The rear member 29 is provided with the aperture 32 which is adapted to take over the hook 27 so as to hold that end from movement, while the other side has the aperture 33 through which is passed the threaded end of the thumb screw 34, which is screwed into the aperture 33 and securely clamps the rear member 29 against the base piece 25; The rear clamping member 29 is provided with the lug 35 projecting from the top and center thereof and having the threaded aperture 36 therein adapted to receive the threaded end of the thumb nut 37, which passes through an aperture 38 in the upper end of the front clamping member 39, which has its lower end projecting downwardly and cooperating with the hooks 30, so that when it is screwed in place the rod 13 with'the surrounding fabric will be securely held between the hooks 30 and the front clamping member 39.

When the awning is to be taken down, it will be obvious that all that is necessary is to unscrew and remove the thumb screws 34, after which the awning can be removed by lifting the clamping member off of the base piece 25 without in any way unclamping or loosening the parts. The thumb screws 34 80 are then screwed back in place and the awning can be rolled up, assuming that the U-shaped frame in the bottom thereof is provided with the folding side pieces shown in my application No. 479,899, filed September 5, 1930. When the awning is replaced in the spring, all that is necessary is to unscrew and remove the thumb screws 34, when the clamping members .can be slipped in place and the thumb screws reinserted to fasten securely the upper portion of the awning in place.

lVhile I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adaptedto carry out at its purposes, it will be understood that it is capable of modifications and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessiated by the state of the prior art.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

1. Means for detachably securing the top of an awning having a rod therein in place on a casing support consisting of a pair of base plates permanently secured to the easing support, a pair of clamping members for the rod for each of the base plates, means for opening and closing the pairs of clamping members, and means for detachably securing each pair of clamping members to its associated plate so that the awnings with the clamping members still secured to the rod can be removed, leavin the base plates in place.

2. Means for detachably securing the top of an awning having a rod therein in place on a casing support consisting of a pair of base plates permanently secured to the easing support, a pair of clamping members for the rod for each of the base plates, means for opening and closing the pairs of clamping members, and means for detachably securing each pair of clamping members to its associated plate, so that the awnings with the clamping members still secured to the rod can be removed, leaving the base plates in place, said last-mentioned means consisting of a screw passed through an aperture in one of the clamping members and threaded into the base plate.

3. Means for detachably securing the top of an awning having a rod therein in place on a casing support consisting of a pair of base plates permanently secured to the easing support, each of said base plates having a threaded aperture therein and a lug projecting outwardly therefrom, apair of clamping members for the rod for each of the base plates, means for opening and closing the pairs of clamping members, and a thumb screw adapted to be passed through an aperture in the rear clamping member and screwed into the threaded aperture in the base plate, the rear clamping member being provided with a pair of apertures therethrough, one cooperating with the lug on the base plate and the other registering with the threaded aperture in the base, so that the awnings with the clamping members still secured to the rod can be removed, leaving the base plates in place.

4. Means for detachably securing the top of an awning having a rod therein in place on a casing support consisting of a pair of base plates permanently secured to the casing support, each of said base plates having a threaded aperture therein and a lug projecting outwardly therefrom, a pair of clamping members for the rod for each of the base plates, each of the rear clamping members being provided with a pair of apertures therethrough, one co-operating with the lug on the base plate and the other registering with the threaded aperture in the base, means for opening and closing the pairs of clamping members, and a screw passed through the aperture in the rear clamping member registering with the threaded aperture and screwed into it so that the awnings with the clamping members still secured to the rod can be removed, leaving the base plates in place.

5. As a new and useful article of manufacture, a base plate having projecting therefrom a lug and having therein a threaded aperture, together with a rear clamping member having a pair of apertures, one adapted to register with the threaded aperture in the base plate and the other to receive the lug, a second clamping member, means for securing the clamping members together in operative position, and a screw adapted to be passed through one of the apertures in the clamping member and threaded into the base plate.
