Said measuring roller is rotated, in the direction of the arrows marked thereon in Figs. I and II, by frictional engagement with said ribbon 1, and such motion thereof is caused to operate stop mechanism for stopping the winding operation when a predetermined and adjustably variable length of ribbon has been wound on the spool, by providing said measuring roller with the gear 32, in coaxial relation therewith and in engagement with the gear33 which is journaled on the stud 34 in said frame 9. Said gear 33 carries the gear 35 which engages the gear 36 on the chain shaft 37. Said shaft 37 is jou naled in said frame 9, and provided with the chain driving wheel 39; so that the latter is turned in definite relation to the rotary movement of said measuring roller 11, but at a very much slower rate.
Said chain driving wheel 39 is engaged by the endless pattern chain 40 which has the high stop link 41 by which the stop mechanism is automatically released, as hereinafter described. Said chain 40 maybe made of any circumferential length desired, corresponding with the length of ribbon to be wound upon the spool 19 and such different circumferential length chains are arranged to be supported in their operative engagement with the chain driving wheel 39, by means of the idle chain wheel 43which is provided with means adjustable to support it at different distances from said driving chain wheel 39. As best shown in Fig. I; such ad- 1 justable supporting means conveniently includes the lever 45 which is provided with the stud shaft 46 upon which said idle chain wheel 43 is journaled. Said lever 45 is conveniently mounted upon the fulcrum shaft 48 in the hearing 49 secured to said table 5 and may be secured in any desired angular position, by the set screw 50.
Said ribbon gauge 14 is conveniently formed of parallel plates which are held by the set screw 52 in such spaced relation as to permit the passage of a normal ribbon 1 between them, without movement of said gauge; but any knot, torn portion, or otherdefect in said ribbon, increasing its normal thickness, causes the ribbon to move said gauge in the direction of its traverse. the spring 56 extending therefrom to said frame 9, as shown in Fig. I. As shown in Fig. IV, said rock shaft 55 carries the trip lever arm 57 which is a crank having, pivotally connected therewith at 58, the trip slide 59 which is fitted to slide upon the standard 60 against which it is resiliently held by the spring 61 which extends to the stud 62 on the base plate 63 of the frame 24. The construction and arrangement described are such that when said gauge 14 is moved by the ribbon 1 as a consequence of a defective portion of such ribbon being caught at said gauge; said shaft 55 is rocked to thrust the slide 59 up the standard 60 and lift the latch 64 which has a hook end normally held, in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. I, with said hook overhanging the right hand side of the pin 65; in which position it is normally detained by the spring 66 extending from said latch 64 to said stud 62, as indicated in Fig. I. The full lines in Fig. I indicate the stopped position of said latch 64, which is pivoted at 68.upon the starting handle 69. Said handle is fulcrumed on said winding shaft 21; and the spring 70 tends to tilt it in the direction of the arrow in Fig. I, but is normally restrained by the engagement of said latch 64 with said pin 65. When said latch is disengaged from said pin, such tilting movement turns said cam 31 and axially disengages the cone 71 of said pulley 26 from the hollow conical clutch head 72 on said shaft 21, which is normally frictionally engaged therewith; and also applies the brake 7 3 to stop the rotation of said shaft 21. Said clutch cone 71 is axially thrust into frictional engagement with the clutch head 72 on said shaft 21 by the coaction of said stationary cam 25 and rotary cam 31, shown in Figs. II and III; when said cam 31 is turned clockwise in said figures. Said cam is thus turned, to start the machine, by manually pressing down the left hand end of the lever which is marked 69 in Fig. I; against the stress of the spring 70, and to a sufficient extent to engage the latch 64 with said pin 65. Said latch 64 is snapped down over said pin 65 by the spring 66 when said depressing movement has reached the proper extent. Said clutch members remain thus engaged until said latch 66 is tripped up at its right hand end in Fig. I, permitting the stress of the spring 70 to reverse the rotary movement of'said cam 31 with respect to the sta tionary cam 25, accompanied by the sliding movement of the latch 64 toward the left in Fig. I to the position shown in that figure, which, as above noted, is the stopped position. Said brake 73 is a semicircular yoke arranged to press the shoe 74, of leather or other friction material, against said head 72, and is provided with the vertical shank 75 which is normally pressed upward by the spring 76 bearing upon the cross head 77, one end of which is pivoted in the frame standard 24 and the other end of which is pivoted in the hanger 78 of said starting lever 69. In ink ribbon winding and measuring mechanism; the combination with a winding shaft; of a ribbon spool; a clutch carried by said shaft; means on said shaft arranged to detachably engage and turn the'ribbon spool; a motor arranged to turn said shaft; a chain driving wheel; a roller arranged to be traversed and turned by the ribbon being wound; and means operatively connecting said roller With said chain driving wheel; whereby said chain driving wheel is arranged to be driven by power from said motor, conveyed by the ribbon being wound; anidle chainwheel; an endless chain supported by said chain wheels; means, including a lever linkage and a stop link in said chain, arranged to stop the winding operation of said shaft, at intervals determined by the circumferential length of said chain, and thereby determine the length of ribbon wound by said spool; a movable ribbon gauge permitting passage'of a normal ribbon without movement of said gauge, but movable by engagement with an abnormal portion of the ribbon; and means operatively connecting said gauge with the winding shaft stop mechanism; whereby the winding operation is stopped upon presentation of a defective portion of ribbon at said gauge.
5. Mechanism as in claim 1; including a latch normally restraining the winding shaft stop mechanism from operating until said latch is released; said link being adapted to move said latch, to release the latter, at predetermined intervals.

Mechanism as in claim 4:; including a latch normally restraining the winding shaft stop mechanism from operating until said latch is released; said link being adapted to move saidlatch, to release the latter, at predetermined intervals; a rock shaft hav- 1ng .a gauge lever arm supporting said gauge; and a trip lever arm on said rock shaft, arranged to release said latch when said gauge is moved by a defective ribbon. y

In ink ribbon winding and measuring mechanism, the combination with .a winding shaft; of a ribbon spool; a clutch carried by said shaft; means on said shaft arranged to detachably engage and turn the ribbon spool; a motor arranged to turn said shaft; a measuring roller arranged to be traversed and turned by said ribbon, as the latter is wound upon said spool; a pattern chain driving wheel rigidly connected with said measuring roller; an idle chain wheel; an endless pattern chain supported by said chain wheels; means, including a lever linkage and a high link in said chain, arranged to stop the win-ding operation of said shaft, at intervals determined by the circumferential length of said chain and thereby determine the length of ribbon wound by said spool.

In ink ribbon winding and measuring mechanism, the combination with a winding shaft; of a ribbon spool; a clutch carried by said shaft; means on said shaft arranged to detachably engage and turn the ribbon spool; a motor arranged to turn said shaft; a measuring roller arranged to be traversed and turned by said ribbon, as the latter is wound upon said spool; a pattern chain driving wheel rigidly connected with said measuring roller; an idle chain wheel; an endless pattern chain supported by said chain wheels; means, including a lever linkage and a high link in said chain, arranged to stop the winding operation of said shaft, at intervals determined by the circumferential length of said chain, and thereby determine the length of ribbon wound by said spool; a movable ribbon gauge permitting passage of a normal ribbon without movement of said gauge, but movable by engagement with an abnormal portion of the ribbon; and means operatively connecting said gauge with the winding shaft stop mechanism; whereby the winding operation is stopped upon presentation of a defective portion of ribbon at said gauge.

In ink ribbon winding and measuring mechanism; the combination with a winding shaft; of a ribbon spool; a clutch carried by said shaft; means on said shaft arranged to detachably engage and turn the ribbon spool; a measuring roller arranged to be turned by the ribbon 011 its way to said spool; an endless chain, including a stop element; and stop mechanism, arranged to be operated by the movement of said chain.
10. In ink ribbon winding and measuring nism, including alever linkage arranged to be operated by the movement of said chain; a brake for said shaft; and brake applying means including a lever arranged to be operated by said chain contemporaneously with the operation of said stop mechanism.
