To all 107mm t may concern Be it known that l, SAMUEL H. DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Converse, in the county of Spartanburg and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful improvementsv in Cone-Gages, of which the following is a speciiication.
rllhis invention relates to a cone .gage and cutting attachment for chines.
lt is ordinarily the practice, inl the operation of cone-vinding machines, to gage the amount of yarn, whichis being wound ,upon each core or tube, by the use of a gage stick, so that the yarn may be severed whenever it appears that a suflicient quantity has been wound upon the core. rlfhis method is inaccurate and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor in its performance. Absolute accuracy in determining the amount of yarn wound upon each core is essential, in order that each cone may be of the correct size, and that all the cones may be uniform in this respect. the cones could not bev packed economically in the standard shipping cases provided for their reception, nor would they fit the machines in which they arey to be used.
lt is therefore the object of my invention to provide a simply constructedand elicient attachment for winding machines of this description, which may be set to operate, when a predetermined quantity 'of` yarn has been wound upon the core carried by the spindle in connection with which it is employed, to' cut the yarn at the proper instant and thus obviate the danger of too little or too great an amount of yarn being woun upon any core. f
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and `arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

a set screw 4. rllhe block 3 is provided with` a vertical, non-circular opening 5 in which the lower end of a vertical standard 6 is mounted and adapted to be secured by the set screw 7. A vertically adjustable slide block 8 having a non-circular opening 82L receiving the standard 6 is Amounted thereon and-is adapted to be secured in adjusted position by means ofthe set screw 9, the said standard being provided with a longitudinal scale of linear measurement which is inscribed in suitable manner thereon, in order that the degree of adjustment of the slide block might be determined accurately. The use of this scale will be described more fully hereinafter. The slide block 8 is provided further with a circular, verticalopenf ing l() in which one depending arm ll of` an inverted U-shaped suspension member l2 is mounted for rotatable and vertically slidable adjustment therein. A set screw 13 is mounted within the block 8 for use in securing the said arm of the member l2 in adjusted position within the receiving vbloclr opening. A bearing member lll having a verticalopening l5 receiving the opposite arm 16 of the suspension member is adapted to be 'secured in adjusted position thereon i by means of the set screw 17. The rotatable cone winding spindle 2. rlhe whirl 19 is j adapted to contact with the outer periphery of each cone as it is being wound upon its core, whichA is connected with the spindle 2, when thesald cone has reached a predev termined size, whereby the whirl will be rotated for al purpose which will be described presently. A winding drum is attached to the shaft 18 for rotation therewith.

Vwhich is adapted tovbe secured to the windingmachine adjacent to one of the yarn guides 22 by means of the clamp 23. A horizontal shaft 24 is rotatably mounted in the body 21 and is provided upon one end with a radial, oscillating arm 25 which is provided upon its free end with a lateral socket 26 in which the shank of a cutter blade 27 is adaptedto be secured by means of the set screw 28. T his blade is adapted, when in its normal, inoperative position, to underlie the stretch of yarn 29 leading from the corresponding guide to the cone 30, which is being built upon the core carried by the corresponding spindle of the winding machine. lt is to be understood that the blade is constructed of .such length that the adjacent stretch ofyarn will be disposed over some vpart of the' blade at all times during its lateral shifting movement, as caused by any suitable form of transverse mechanism (not shown) which may be employed upon the winding machine.
Aytoothed pinion 31 yis fixedly mounted upon the opposite end of the shaft 24 and has a radial, resetting'arm 32 formed thereon. A longitudinally adjustable weight 33 is mounted upon thearm 32 and is adapted normally to maintain the said arm in its depending position, whereby the cutter blade is maintained'in its inoperative position beneath the stretchof yarn. A guide member 34is `formed upon kthe outer edge of a disk 34a which isloosely mounted upon the shaft 24, the guide member being disposed outwardly of the outer periphery of the pinion 31, and a tangentially disposed rackbar 35 is mounted for reciprocation within the guide member with its teeth 36 meshing with the teeth A37 of the pinion. This rack bar forms a part of the connecting mechanism C and has its upper end connected for longitudinal adjustment with relation to a parallel vconnecting rod 38, by means of the clamp lmember 39. The upper end of the connecting rod'38 is provided with a slot 40 l receiving the crank pin 41 of a crank arm j 42, the latterbeing fixedlyk mounted upon one end of` a horizontal crank shaft 43. rlhis shaft 43 is'journaled in a bearing member 44, which is detachably mounted upon the bar 45 of the winding machine, adjacent to the corresponding gage device by means of the clamp 4G. rThe shaft 43 is arranged parallel to the shaft 24 of the corresponding cutting device and is provided on its opposite end with a radial crank lever 47. An oppositely extending resetting arm 48 is also formed upon this end of the crank shaft and is adapted normally to be maintained in depending position by means of the weight 49 which is adjustably mounted thereon. This arm thus serves to maintain the crank arm 42 and the lever 47 normally in their upwardly projecting inoperative positions.
A flexible cord 50 has one end connected to tially in a predetermined position upon the standard 6, it being understood that the said standard is calibrated so that the slide may be set for a cone of a given number of ounces, of a given diameter, or containing a speci* fied number of yards of yarn, the particular units of measurement employed being determined by the requirements of the art to which this invention relates. As the yarn is wound onto the core, which is attached to the winding spindle, the whirl 19 will be spaced from the outer periphery of the cone being wound, until the latter has reached the requisite mean diameter, whereupon the outer periphery of the whirl will become engaged with the cone so as to be rotated thereby. The flexible cord 50 consequently will be wound onto the drum 2O during this rotation, thereby operating the crank lever 47 to turn the crank shaft. rThis motion of the shaft is resisted by the counterbalancing -f andthe attached rack bar 35 are thrust downwardly, imparting a semi-rotation to the shaft 24 of the cutting device. rl`his movement of the shaft 24- will cause the arm 25 to oscillate downwardly and thus bring the cutter blade into engagement with the 55.*
adjacent stretch of the traveling yarn, there by severing the same. The counterweight 33 isadapted toresist this movement of the shaft 24 and serves to restore the same to its normal position, with the cutter blade inoperative, as soon as the' rack bar is released. It is also to'be understood that this Winding machine isof the type wherein the cone- Winding spindle vvill'be checked at the instant the yarn is severed by any cause. The Whirl of the gage device will thus cease to operate as soon as the cuttingdevice has performed its operation, and the operative parts of the attachment Will be reset automatically for use in connection With the next succeeding cone to be lWound upon the spindle 2.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, it should be apparent that I have provided an attachment forwinding machines, Which maybe set to sever the yarn, being Wound upon each spool, automatically, after a predetermined quantity has been Wound thereon, whereby all of the cones vvillbe of exactly the same size.` The respective gage devices upon a Winding machine may be set to operate for diiierent sized cones, so that different sized cones may be produced to meet thedemand, Without rendering it'necessary fovr the operator to gage the different cones, as they are Wound, with any manually operable gage device. lt is to be understood, however, that my attachment is applicable not only to cone Winding machines, but to any other machine for Winding bobbins, spools, or the like, the principle involved being the same in each instance. Ialso intend that minor changes in the details of construction, such as fall Within the scope of the' appended claims, may be resorted to in practicelwhen found necessary.
Vhat is claimed is:
l. The combination with a Winding machine includinga frame, a vWinding spindle mounted therein, and a yarn guide disposed in spaced relation to the said spindle, of a cutting device including a support mounted upon the frame adjacent to the said guide, and a movable cutting element carried by the said support, a gage device including a support mounted upon the frame adjacent to the spindle, and a movable membercarried by the lastnamed supportand being normally ydisposed in radially spaced relation to the spindle to be engaged and tripped by the cone to 4be Wound thereon, means connecting the movable member of the gage device With the cutting element of the cutting device for causing cooperative movement thereof, and yieldable' means tending normally to maintain the cutting element in its inoperative position.
