This invention relates to an improved abrading tool.
The object of the invention is to provide an abrading tool, particularly adapted to be used by chiropodists for blowing the dust away from the operator when using a rotary burr for smoothing or thinning the toe nails.
In performing this operation the dust from the toe nails, especially if the person operated upon is afflicted with a superabundance of uric acid, is very irritating to the mucous membrane of the operator, and the object of this invention is to blow the dust away from the operator while he is operating upon the patients toe nails.
The invention consists in an abrading tool such as hereinafter set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a plan view of the abrading tool of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the different views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a rotary burr comprising a shank 6 and a burr member 7, the burr member having a roughened periphery consisting of rows of teeth 8 extending longitudinally of the burr and separated by slots 9, the construction of the same being well known to those skilled in the art. Upon the shank 6 is fastened a fan 10 comprising a hub 11 and blades 12, the fan being adjustably fastened to the shank 6 by a set screw 13, so that it can be set at different distances from the roughened end portion or abrading surface. The space between the fan 10 and the roughened periphery of the bore member 7 is unobstructed, so that upon rotating the tool the material removed from the toe nail is carried by the current of air caused by the fan away from the operator, the tool as a whole thus removing the material from the toe nail and directing it away from the operator, thus securing the object of this invention which is to remove the dust from the toe nail and at the same time blow the dust away from the operator while he is operating upon the patients toe nails.
In operation, the tool is rotated in the direction of the arrow Fig. 1 and the blades operator.
In operating the tool the burr is used in the usual manner and is rotated by a suitable shaft driven by an electric motor.
I claim:
1. An abrading tool, and a fan thereon adj acent said abrading tool, there being an unobstructed space between said tool and fan.
2. An abrading tool, and a fan adjustably fastened thereto adjacent said abrading tool, there being an unobstructed space between said tool and fan.
3. An abrading tool comprising a cylindrical member, the periphery of one end portion thereof being roughened to form an abrading surface, the remainder of said member constituting a shank, and a fan on said shank adjacent said abrading surface, there being an unobstructed space between said abrading surface and fan.

5. An abrading tool comprising a cylindrical member, the periphery of one end portion thereof being roughened to form an abrading surface, the remainder of said member constituting a shank adjacent said abrading surface, and a fan on said shank spaced apart from said abrading surface there being an unobstructed space between said fan and said abrading surface.
