Description

A. P. BEEBE June 30, 1931.
GRINDING WHEEL Filed Sept. 22, 1930 l} ATTORNEY! 25 ment to the metallic backing.
Patented June 30, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALAN P. BEEIBE, OI DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENINSULAR GRINDING WHEEL COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN GRINDING WHEEL Application filed September 22, I930. Serial No. 483,618.
The invention relates to grinding wheels of that type in which a flat disk of the abrasive material is secured to a revoluble metal backing plate. It is the primary object of the in- 5; vention to obtain a greater strength both in the Wheel and its attachment to the backing plate and to this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sect-ion through the .abrasive wheel and the backing plate to which it is to be attached;
Figure 2 is an elevation of the reinforcement for the abrasive member with the scv curing sockets attached thereto.
tendency to rupture under centrifugal force.
With face grinding wheels it. is a lso customary to imbed securingnuts in the plastic material Which form the anchors engaged by the clamping bolts for securing the abrasive eleln my improvedconstruction I ("Ol'DlJllH these features in such a manner as to increase their elliciency in performing both functions. This is accomplishedby welding or otherwise rigidly securing to an open mesh metallic enforcement a series of nuts or anchors and subsequently imbedding the reinforcement and anchors in the plastic material from which the grinder Wheel is formed.
In detail, A is an open mesh metallic reinforcement and B are the nut members provided with a central threaded aperture G and a tapering or Wedge shaped peripheral portion. In combining these elements, the nuts B are first positioned in proper relation to each other and the member A is then secured thereto, preferably by Welding as indicated at the points D. The combined element is then imbedded or molded into the abrasive body E so that the rear faces of the nuts B tallicgeinforcement serves to distribute the stresses from the individual nuts B into the whole body of the wheel. On the other hand, as the nuts 13 are clamped to the backing plate 1 stresses developed by centrifugal action are resisted not only by the tensile strength of the reinforcement A but also by its attachment to said backing plate. Thus the whole structure is much stronger than one in which the securing nuts and the reinforcing member are not rigidly connected.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a grinding wheel, the combination of an open mesh metallic reinforcement, an anchor member rigidly attached thereto and an abrasive body in which both of said members are imbedoled;
In a grinding wheel, the combination of an open mesh metallic reinforcing member, a plurality of anchor members rigidly attached thereto and an abrasive body in which all of said members are imbedded.
3. In a grinding wheel, the combination of an open mesh metallic reinforcing member, a series of anchor members "welded thereto and an abrasive body in which all of said members are imbedded.
ALAN P. BEEBE.
