Description

G. W. BAKER.
' Gap-Box. No. 18,117. Patented Sept. '1, 1857.
' MPETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON. 0 CV UNITED STATES PATET OFFICE.
GEO. W. BAKER, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF Ali ABIJAH FRENCH.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERCUSSION-CAP CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18,1 [7, dated September 1, 1857.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BAKER, of Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden and State of Vermont, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Percussion-Cap Primdrawing.
My improvement in the percussion cap primer consists in the peculiar construction thereof, which enables a portion, 2', of one of the sides of its case to form an elastic holder, which prevents the escape of caps from the mouth of the primer, save when a proper degree of force is exerted for the purpose.
The spiral channel for'the reception of the percussion-caps in my improved primer commences near thecenter of the case, and extends to the mouth of the same. The plate j, which is soldered to the bottom of the primercase, embraces the spiral spring h in the center of said case, and then extends outward spirally and terminates just within the mouth of the primer. To complete the spiral channel for the caps a short curved plate, It, is soldered to the side of the plate j, and also to the bottom and to one side of the primer-case, as shown in Fig. 2. The portion i of the primer-ease which extends forward from its connection with the end of the curved plate It is a little narrower than the opposite side of primer. The short curved plate is also serves the purpose of securely bracing the side i 0: the primer-case at the point where the said side is detached from the bottom of the ease. The cover 9 of the primer-case is struck into the curved shape shown in Fig. 5 before it is secured in its position upon said case. The said cover is perforated with two small holes viz., one for the reception of the central screwshank, a, and the other. for the reception of the forward steadying-pin, b, which are firmly soldered to the bottom of the primer case. When the said cover is placed in its position upon the primer, the broad-faced ornamental nut f is screwed upon the screw-shank a with a sufficient degree of force to spring the said cover and cause it to closely embrace the sides of the primer-case, with the exception of the portion 2' thereof, which is made narrower than the other portions of the sides of said case for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
My improved percussion-cap primer costs less, and is a much neater and more perfect article than the old style of primer, which has a spring mouth-piece riveted to it for the purpose of retaining the caps within the case with the proper degree of force. The caps are con tinuously forced forward toward the mouth of my improved primer by means of the arm d and its sliding hand 6, which are acted upon by the spiral spring h.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new manufacture, is-
The within-described pereussion-cap primer, whose improvement consists in the peculiar construction which enables one side of the case of said primer to serve as the elastic capretainer at the side of the outletof said case, substantiallyas herein set forth.
The above specification of my new and im proved percussion-cap primer signed and witnessed this 20th day of June, 1857.
