The opposite wallof the body 1 embodies at the lower end a smooth inwardly directed curved formation which co-operates with a flange 4 on the depending port-ion v3 to pro vide an outlet opening. A valve seat 5 is provided around the outlet opening with which a valve member 6 co'operates to control passage from the main body 1 through the outlet opening. By reason of the fact that considerable silt and other foreign matter passes through drain valves of the character' to which this application appertains, in addition to the drain water, it is necessary that the mounting for the valve member 6 be of simple construction in order that free and positive movement'thereof shall be 55 assured. Such a mounting is provided in the illustrated valve and includes the lug 7 at the upper end of the valve member 6 which lug includes a tapered Vlower wall 8 that rests upon the tapered upper surface 9 60 of the iiange 4. Thisfarrangement serves to support the valve member 6 in position over the valve seat 5 and this valve seat is preferably slightly inclined from the vertical and therefore the valve member 6 will 65 normally be seated thereon. The upper surface of the lug 7 is rounded and in this' manner a fulcrum point 10 is defined at the juncture of this rounded upper surface and the tapered wall 8. This fulcrum point 10; 70 is disposed at the juncture provided between the outer wall of the'depending portion 3 and the surface 9. When water collected in the body 1 exerts sufficient pressure on the valve member 6 the valve member is pivoted 7h about the point 10 into open position as depicted by dotted lines in Fig. 2. In order to prevent displacement of the lug 7 from the ilange 4 a thumb screw 11 is angularly extended through the depending wall portion 3 and the end of this screw is disposed in a recess 12 formed in therounded vupper wall of the lug` 7, this recess being inclined similarly to the inclination' of the screw 11. As stated, considerable silt passes through the outlet opening of the drain valve and this might collect on the valve seat 5 and prevent seating of the valve member 6. An outwardly extending lug 13 is formed on the outer face of the valve 9G member 6. On the wall 2 in alinement with the lug 13, a boss 14 is formed, it being apparent that the out-let opening is disposed below the wall 2. A tapped opening 15 is provided in the boss 14 and a thumb screw 16 is extended through this tapped opening. By rotating this screw 16 to cause the same to move downwardly the lower end thereof may be engaged with the upper surface of the lug 13. By applying force to the screw reef 16 considerable pressure may be impressed on the lug 18 and therefore the valve member 6 which will crush and force away any deposit on the valve seat 5 and in this manner proper seating of the valve member 6 may be attained. It is apparent that the thumb screw 16 may be disposed in this downward position to secure the valve member 6 against movement and therefore prevent passage through the drain valve. The main body 1 is intended 'tor mounting in a vertically extending sewer pipe or the like such as that indicated by 17 in the drawings. Extending from the outer periphery of the body 1 adjacent the upper end thereof are bosses 18 which are preferably formed integral with the body 1. These bosses 18 rest on the upper end of the pipe 17 and serve to support the body 1 in said pipe. In order to secure the parts in this position a plastic substance such as concrete or the like, which is indicated by 19, is disposed around the upper end ot' the body 1 that projects above the bosses 18. This embeds the bosses 18 and therefore the body 1 will be securely mounted in proper posit-ion. Extending inwardly ot the body 1 are a plurality ot bosses 2O which are arranged adjacent the upper end thereof and which serve to support the dra-in plate 21. The drain plate 21 has openings 22 therein through which the drain water and the like passes into the body l. ln the present instance the openings 22 are in the form of parallel slots although it is to be understood that other forms might be employed. One of the openings or slots 22, indicated by 23, 'is alined with the thumb screw 16. lVhen this thumb screw 16 is retracted from engagement with the boss 13 and disposed in an upper position, substantially similar to that indicated by full lines in F 2. the lower end thereof serves as a stop to limit pivotal movement of the valve member 6 about the tulcrum point 10. lVhen the thumb screw 16 is arranged in this position the head 211- thereot is disposed parallel with the slot 23 and therefore when the drain plate 21 is disposed on the bosses 20 this head will be disposed in the slot 23 and will be prevented from turning movement and in this manner the thumb screw 16 will be maintained in the desired position. In order to expedite the movement of the screw 16 trom the upper position just described into the lower position in engagement with the lug 13 the intermediate portion of the screw threads thereon are removed and therefore the screw may be readily moved from the upper to the lower position without the necessity of tedious manipulation thereof. Depending from the plate 21 is a lug 25 which is bifurcated at the lower end thereof as indicated at 26. lVhen the plate 21 is properly disposed in position the head 27 of the thumb screw 11 is disposed in the bifurcation 26 and is held against movement and therefore retraction ot this thumb screw from the recess 12 will be prevented. lVhen the plate 21 is removed from engagement with the bosses 2O it may be employed as a tool to facilitate, rotation of the thumb screw 16 by disposing the head 2st in the bifurcation 26 as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. Manifestly this arrangement will permit the exertion of coi'isiderable force by the thumb screw 16.
From the foregoing description it is manifest that a drain valve is provided which may be ez-:peditiously and economically installed and which valve will embody an arrangement tor bringing about eillective seating of the valve member. Further it is evident that the device is constructed to embody a portion which will co-act with other portions oi" tl e device toprevent detrimental displacement of said other portions.
lVhile a selected embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is to be understood that this is capable ot' variation and modification without departing from the scope ot the following claims.
I claim:
1. A drain valve comprising a main body having a portion of the wall thereof eX- tended inwardly to provide a horizontal wall portion, said main body having an outlet opening therein below said. horizontal portion and having a valve seat around said opening, a valve member cri-operating with said valve seat, a portion depending from said horizontal wall portion providing a su port, a lug on said valve member rested on said support tor supporting said valve meniber for movement relative to said valve seat, said lug having a recess therein, and means carried by said horizontal wall portion and extended into said recess for preventing displacement ot said lug from said support.
2. fi drain valve comprising a main body having a portion of the wall thereof extended inwardly to provide a horizontal wall portion, said main body having an outlet opening therein below said horizontal portion and having a. valve seat around said opening, a valve member cri-operating with said valve seat, a portion depending from said horizontal wall portion providing a support, a lug on said valve member rested on said support for supporting said valve member for movement relative to said valve seat, means for preventing displacement of said lug from said support, a drain plate for closing the open upper end ot said main body` and a member depending from said drain plate for preventing movement of means preventing displacement of said lug.
3. A drain valve comprising a main body having a portion of the wall thereof extended inwardly to provide a horizontal wall portion, said main body having an outlet port, a lug on said valve member rested onsaid support for supporting said valve member for pivotal movement relative to said valve seat, and means carried by and depending from said horizontal wall portion for limiting said pivotal movement.
4. A drain valve comprising a main body having a portion of the wall thereof extended inwardly to provide a horizontal wall portion, said main body having an outlet opening therein below said horizontal portion and having a valve seat around said opening, a valve member co-operating with said valve seat, a portion depending` from said horizontal wall portion providing a support, a lug on said valve member rested on. said support for supporting said valve member for pivotal movement relative to said valve seat, means for limiting said pivotal movement, and another lug on said. valve member, said pivotal movement limiting means being movable into engagement with said last named lug to force said valve mem ber against said valve seat.
5. A drain valve comprising a main body having a portion of the wall thereof extended inwardly to provide a horizontal wall portion, said main body having an outlet opening therein below said horizontal portion and having a valve seat around said opening, a valve member (zo-operating with said valve seat, a portion depending from said horizontal wall portion providing a support, a lug on said valve member rested on said support Vfor supporting said valve member for pivotal movement relative to said valve seat, means for limiting said pivotal movement, another lug on said valve member, said pivotal movement limiting means being movable into engagement with said last named lug to force said valve member against said valve seat, and a drain plate t for closing the open upper end of said main body having an opening therein receiving a portion of said last named means to prevent movement thereof when said means is disposed to limit the pivotal movement of said valve member.
6. A drain valve comprising a main body valve member, and means carried by said horizontal wall portion in alignment with said lug for limiting movement of said valve member when in retracted position and for preventing movement of said valve member when disposed in advanced position and engaged with said lug.
7 A drain valve comprising a main body having a portion of the wall thereof extended vinwardly to provide a horizontal wall portion, said main body having an outlet opening therein below said horizontal wall portion and having a valve seat around said opening, a valve member co-operating with said valve seat, means for supporting said valve member for movement toward and away from said valve seat, a lug on said valve member, a drain plate having openings therein, means for supporting said drain plate above said horizontal wall portion, a screw member mounted in said horizontal wall portion and providing a stop to limit movement of said valve member, said screw member having a head thereon disposed in an opening in said drain plate to prevent turning thereof whereby said screw member may be arranged in a predetermined position to limit the movement of said valve member.
8. YA drain valve comprising a main body and having pins extended through said main body adjacent the upper end thereof, said pins extending inwardly of said main body and outwardly beyond the periphery there-V of, the portions of said pins extending beyond the periphery of said main body providing a support whereby said drain valve may be disposed at the end of a pipe, a drain plate, the portions of said pins extending inwardly of said body providing a support for said drain plate.
