The production of a support comprising bearlngs about Whlch the member is approximately centered constitutes the first step of my improved process. I prefer to produce the support by the use of a pipe as illustrated, but my invention broadly is not limited to this particular form. Ordinarily such support will not be found to be balanced about the axis of the shafts, since there is no necessity for precise accuracy in the production of this part. Accuracy of balance at this stage would not, however, be objectionable. In the drawings, the shafts 12 are shown slightly out of center with respect to the plugs 11, as exemplifying the lack of necessity for accuracy, the inaccuracy being exaggerated in the drawing as compared with ordinary results in practice. Indeed, the plugs with their centered shafts would ordinarily be fairly accurate, there being much more likelihood of inaccuracy in balance in the pipe than in the plug mountings for thepipe.
With the support 10 roughtly centered about an established axis of rotation, a layer 13 of material which can be readily applied and easily machined is placed in position upon the support completely surrounding it at its sides. This layer 13 may be applied by any suitable process available by which it is made to fit snugly on the support at every point so as to fill up any possible irregularities in' the outer race of the support. In the embodiment of my invention as shown in Fig. 2, the layer 13 is applied in the form of a plastic mixture, being plastered on roughly and permitted to harden and dry in position, such material being of substantially the same weight as that of the rubber or composition which is to form the body of my completed roll. I have found that in case rubber is to be used for the body of the roll, the layer 13 may to advantage be formed of water putty. All that is required with respect to the layer 13 in theform of the invention as shown in Fig.3 is that such layer when hardened may hold its form, may have a tight fit at all points on the support, may be easily machined on its surface, and may be of substantially the same weight as that 'of the body of the roll laterto be applied.
After the application'and drying of the layer 13, if the outer face of such layer is not already in concentric form about the axis of the shafts 12, as shown in Fig. 3, in such case said layer is turned down into such concentric form. The roll in such condition is then balanced dynamically about the axis of the shafts 12. In the form of device as shown in said Fig. 3, the balanced effect has been produced by boring out the metal at one side of the plug 11 at one or more points as indicated at 141-. This particular manner of balancing is not a requisite, however, any
suitable method of balancing being sati factory which embodies the correction in or in connection with the metal support as distinguished from a correction in or in connection with the layer 13.
These supports in the condition as shown in Fig. 3 are ready for shipment to the shop or department in which the body material is to be applied to the supports. Inasmuch as the layer 13 of putty or other suitable material is to be removed in any event before the application of the body material, there is no necessity for any undue care with respect to the handling of the parts.
For completing the roll after the balancing operation, all portions of the layer 13 are removed from the support, and the body 15 of rubber or composition of the desired character is cast or otherwise applied to the support in the ordinary manner, care being taken that the body material fit snugly at all points about the support 10, the ordinary steps being taken for insuring that the body shall have the necessary tight anchorage to the support. In case the material of the body 15 is cast in precisely concentric form about the axis of the shafts 12, the resulting roll will be found to be perfectly balanced without the necessity for any further steps, the accuracy of this result depending, of course, upon the accuracy with which the weight of the material of the layer 13 when dried and hardened matches the weight of the material of the body 15 in its finished form If desired, the body 15 may be initially formed oversize, as is usually done when the body is formed of rubber, and may then be turned down into concentric form with respect to the axis of the shafts 12, such layer of rubber being first preferably vulcanized. If the process has been followed with close attention to all the refinements as above set forth, the turned downroll will be found to be in dynamically balanced condition with respect to the axis of the roll.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a slightly different form of structure. In this form, a rough metal pipe 16 provided with plugs 17 having trunnions 18 011 their faces is provided with a layer 19 of Babbitt metal or the like, preferably by being cast in position thereon, the outer face of which layer is very readily turned down into concentric form with respect to the axis of the trunnions. After the layer 19 is brought to its concentric form with respect to the axis of the roll, the roll is balanced in any approved manner, whereupon it is ready for shipment to the shop or department by iwhich the composition body is to be applied. The process of producing balanced rolls and the like, comprising the provision of a layer of easily applied material about a metal support in the form of a rough bar having bearings at its ends with the outer surface of said layer concentric with respect to said bearings, then balancing said covered support with respect to the axis of said bearings, and then after the balancing operation providing a layer of body material aboutsaid support with its outer surface concentric with respect to said axis.

The process of producing balanced rolls and the like, comprising the provision of a layer of easily applied material about a support in the form of a piece'of com mercial pipe provided at its ends with plugs having bearing shafts on their outer faces with the outer surface of said layer concentric with respect to theaxis of said shafts, then balancing said covered. support with respect to said axis, and then after the balancing operation providing a layer of body material about said support with its outer surfaceconcentric with respect to said-:axis.
