. LOUIS ALEXANDRE-CADORET, OF PAWTUGKET, RHODE ISLAND SHUTTLE THREADER Application filed July 17, 1930. Serial 130. 468,714.
The invention relates to threading devices for the shuttles of automatic looms, and in proper tension.
addition to embodying means for automatically threading the shuttle, includes novel provision for holding the thread under It is the object of the invention to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive construction, one which may be quickly and easily applied to a shuttle, and onewhich will be highly efficient and long-lived.
With the'foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter 'describedand claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. .1 is a top plan View of a portion of the shuttle equipped with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View partly in elevation, the sectional portion of the View being cut on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Figs. l and 5 are sectional views on lines H and 5'5 of Fig. 3.
Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the threader and tensioner separate from the shuttle.
A preferred construction has been illustrated and will be specifically described, but attention is invited to the fact that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
The device embodies a horizontally elongated Vertical wall 10 having its front portion outwardly thickened as illustrated at 11.
,The'front face 12 of this thickened wall end,
is acute to the inner longitudinal side 18 of the wall 10 and is also acute to the top of said wall, its lower portion being appropriately rounded to prevent injury to the thread.
Between its inner and outer sides, the thickenedwall portion 11 is provided with a re cess 15. A thread slot 16 formed vertically in the wall, leads from the recess 15 through the inner side 13 of said wall, and a second vertical thread slot 17 extends from said recess to the outer side of the thickened wall end 11. The portion 18 of this thickened slots 16 and 17, is longer than the portion behind said recess and slots and extends slightly below the upper face of a bottom plate 23 hereinafter described, said portion 18 being in advance of the front end of said plate 23 to provide an entrance throat 19 through which thread sliding down the face 12, may enter the recess and slots. To prevent the thread from cutting the slot walls, any or all of the latter be provided with steel or other hard wearing pins 20.
Disposed vertically in the recess 15, is a pin 21 of such metal as to resist cutting by the thread, and slidable as well as rotatable upon this pin, is a hard thread tensioning bead 22. lVhen the thread is rather slack, the bead is at its lowermost position but when said thread is more taut, the bead occupies a raised position. The thread is prevented from whipping forwardly out of engagc ment with the bead 22 by the nose or the like 18. Obviously, the pin may be secured in any desired way and any appropriate provision may be made for inserting the head 22 into the recess 15. In the Jresent showin the recess 15, said plate being adapted to rest upon the bottom of the usual shuttle recess 24 in which the invention is secured by the screw or pin 25.
A top plate 26, preferably integral with the wall 10, projects laterally inward from the latter and is provided with an oblique front end 27 which is flush with the face 12. The free longitudinal edge portion of this top plate 26, is formed with a notch 28, and in front of and behind this notch, said edge portion is turned downwardly and inwardly to provide thread-guiding curls 20 and 30 respectively, the curl 30 being relatively short.
lVhen the threader is installed, it operates as follows :-V hen the loom dolls and the shuttle makes its first trip along the lay, in the direction of the arrow A (Fig. 1), the thread T whips as it withdraws from the filling F, and in so doing, said thread whips into engagement with the curls 29 and 30. Upon I2 r V 1,911,424,
the next stroke ofv the shuttle, in the direction'indicated by the arrow A of Fig. 1, the thread slides down the face 12 and withdraws from the front curl 29, remaining however in engagement with the rear curl 80. When thedownwardly sliding thread reaches the throat 19, it enters the slots 15 and 16 and extends across the recess 15, under the threadtensioning head 22. During operation of the shuttle after the thread reaches this position, the bead 22 ris'esand falls according to'the pull or tension on the thread and consequently exerts a proper braking influence upon said thread, insuring the best weaving results.
i Vhilethe exact details disclosed may be I advantageously followed, attention is again invited to the fact that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may he.
