IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-PEN HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,132, dated August 15, 1876; application filed February 3,1876.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beitknown that I, LORENTZ BERG, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7

Figure 1 is the holder forming the ink -reservoir, detached from the pen and pen-holding sleeve. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the complete pen, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to that class. of fountain-pens in which thehandle or holder contains the ink or writing-fluid, which is fed gradually and regularly to the pen; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, A is the ink-holding tube, which serves as, a handle or pen-holder. It is preferably made of metal, and has at one end a close fitting cap or cover, a, which is removed when the tube is to be filled with ink. The other end of tube A is closed by a plate, I), having two or more fine perforations, c c, Fig. 3, through which the ink is supplied to a conical tube, d, which forms a continuation of tube A, being soldered or otherwise perma' nently secured to b. The opposite end of tube d is hinged at k to-still another tube, D, which gradually tapers off to a fine point, and through which the ink is fed to the pen. The joint between the tubes d D is covered by a rubber sleeve, '0, so as to prevent the ink from sieving out. A- slotted tube, F, having a sleeve, f,

which holds the pen f, is adjusted to the tube A. This sleeve must be so long that when the pen f is slid out ready for use, the point i of the tube D will reach, or nearly reach, the

middle of the pen, so that the ink can be freely supplied. When the pen is not in use it is withdrawn, and the point t of tube D is then protected by a cap or cover, L, which is adjusted upon the sleeve F.

The mode of using my improved fountainpen is as follows The cover a is removed, and through the opening ink is poured into the tube A. This being done, the cover a is again adjusted, a rubber Washer being, preferably, inserted between the cover a and the tube, to prevent splashing or spilling of the ink contained therein. The cap L is then removed, and the pen slid out of its protecting-tube or holder F. The hinged joint between-the tubes d and D now enables the latter, which has already a slight bend or inclination toward the pen, as shown in the drawing, to be brought in contact with the same, and a slight shake will bring the inkto flow through one of the perforations, c, in plate I), the other serving as a vent into the tubes d and D, through which it is. fed regularly to the pen.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a fountain-pen, the ink-holding handle or tube A, having the plate b, perforated at c c, and tubes 12 D, hinged together as shown, and forming a continuation or extension of tube A, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.

2. In combination with the tube A, having the perforated plate I) and tubes (1 D, the adjustable pen-holding tube F and cap or cover .L, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbcfore set forth.
