FIRE EXTINGUISHER Filed April 5, 1928 Patented June 16, 1931 HUGO'LEIPOLD, or Bernardo, NEW YORK,- AssIGnoR r BUFFALO FIRE .APIEfLIANCE CORPORATION, or BUFFALQNEW YORK, ,A CORPORATIQN or vnw YORK FiaE'ExTInGuIsHEn Application a ea a ri 5,
This invention relates to a fire extinguisher and more particularly to an apparatus of this characteroit the portable type in which the tank is inverted forstarting the operation 'oic' the extinguisher and playing the fluidon the fire. I I
As heretofore constructed it was possible for oneof the liquids in the tank to discharge partly before'becoming'mixed with the other "inverting the tank. 7.
.- It is the purpose of this invention to pro vide means for causing the two liquids in the liquid soth'at the full efliciency of theapparatus was not obtained immediately upon tank to mix properlyuimmediately upon inverting the apparatus'and'before any of the liquid escapes from the tank and thereby preventing any unmixed liquid from escaping from the tank and also increasing the rapidity and efliciency of theapparatus,' In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 i a vertical section of a'fire extinguisher equipped with an approved form .Lof my invention.
Figure2 is a horizontal section taken on thecorrespondingly numbered line 1n Figurel. v
Figure 3' is a fragmentary inside view of the tank showing the baffle over the outlet of of any suitable metal, as'usual, and comprises a'cylindricalbody '10, a bottom 11, a semispherical dome or top 12 which isprovided with a central inlet '13, and a cover 14 which closes said inlet and whichisdetachably con-' nect'edwithsaid dome. The interior of this tank forms an outer chamber 15 for one of the 'fluidsf16' which is mixed", with another liquid to produce the fire extinguisher solution or fluid whereby fires/are quenched;
The domevof the tank is provided'on one 7 At its upper end the inn'ertube is 1 28. 'Seria1'No. 26 7,542.
side with a main outlet 9 for the mixed fire extinguishing solutionor fluid and this .outlet connects with a hose 17 having a delivery nozzle 18 for playing the extinguishing solution on the fire. l
To prevent any large particles from escaping through the outlet a screen '19 isprovided which is arranged within the dome and made of spherical form. with its concave side facing) outwardly and enclosing the main outlet and secured at its edge to the innersideof the dome;
VVith-in' the centralpart of the tank 7 isarranged an upright tube 20 which 1 forms an inner chamber 21 for the reception of the other liquid: 22' which is adapted to be mixed with the liquid in the :outer chamber and form] therewith a. fire extinguishing fluid.
provided with a removable stopper 24 adapted to open upon inverting the apparatus and permit the liquid in theinner chamber to flow into'the outer-chamber and mix with the liquid in the latter for fluid. V V
- In the absence of any provisionto prevent it, som-e'of the liquid from the outer chamher will escape through the outletof the extinguisher before the same becomes mixed with the liquid intheinner chamber upon inverting the apparatus thereby reducing the efficiency of the apparatus and wasting material. Y
producing a fire extinguishing the dome ofthe tank between the main outlet' of the dome and the inner outlet of the central tube. This baffl-e is curved and faces an inner Outlet'23 which is arranged" adjacent to the main outlet and which has s To avoidthis a baflle 25 is provided Which is constructed of metal and arranged within with its concaveside outwardly and toward the main outlet and the same is inclined to- ;ward the centerof the apparatusand'se sured at its horizontally opposite edges to the inner side ofthe dome while its upper and lower edges are spaced therefrom to form upper and lower passages 26, 27
' stunting-the extinguishing solution escapes through the upper large passage above the baffle and thence through the main outlet and to the hose and its nozzle by which the attendant plays the mixed extinguishing fluid on the flames. This mixing operation so rapid th at an'yfhiid'of the outercharnber passing through the'sinall lowe'r'p'assage below the battle is negligible and whatever may pass is promptly mi'xedfwith the main body of mixed fluids which quickly'reaches the concave side of the baffle after inverting the apparatus.
By thus directing the liquidof the outer cha'mber'towa'rd the outlet of the inner chamher before any liquid can escape to the ex terior of the apparatus,prdper mixing'of the different kinds of liquids, is assured and a marked increase in the efficiency offth'e ape V paratus is obtained.
WVhen the apparatus is restoredto -its upright position any liquid which maybepres- 'ent on the outer or eoncaveside offthe bathe drains from the same through the lower emu intermediatepassage'QT into the outer chamber ofthe tank and thereby prevent any mixed solution from being trapped in the baffle an-dcor'roding the same.
Aside frombeing very efficient these baffle means are very simple 'in constructionand do not materially increase the cost of the apparatus;
I claim as my invention I 1. A fire extinguisher comprising tank forming an outer. chamber adapted to con tain one liquid of a'njextinguishing'fluid and liavingan o'utlet'at its upper end,fa tube arranged within the tank and forming an inner chamber adapted to contain "another liquid of'an extinguishiiigfluid andp-rovided at its upper end with an outlet, a screen ar ranged over the innerside "of the outlet of the tank, and a b'aflie arranged within the tank between saidscree'n and-the outlet of sa'id'inner chamber, and having its horizontally opposite ends connected withthe adjacent wallof the outer chain er andseparatedat its upper and lower ends frorn'the adjacent wall-of the outer chamber b'y'upper and lower 'zpassages,

4. A fire extinguisher comprising a tank forming an outer chamber for the reception of one liquid of a fire'extinguishing fluid and having a cylindrical body and a semi-spherical dome containing a main outlet for said extinguishing fluid upon inverting the apparatus, atube arranged within the tank and forming an inner chamber for containing another liquid of the fire extinguishing fluid and having an '1I1I1I' outlet ad acent to said main outlet, an imperforate baffle which is interposed between said inner and main'outlets' and which is inclined and curved horizontally so thatits concave side faces outwardly and is secured at its horizontally-opposite edges to the dome of the tank while its upper and lower edgesare spaced from the dome to form upper and lowerpassages for the extinguishing fluid, and a semi-spherical screen arrangedbetween the baflie and the dome and having itsconca-ve side facing out wardly jan'd its edge secured to the dome.
