Description

June 16, 1931. D. F. WARNER EMERGENCY GOVERNOR Filed Oct. 2. 1929 m w P w a v 0% M 5 6 A 8 6 ha 8 r m 7 in 2 v w; 2 g z F. w P. I v 9 I i Patented June 16, 1931 S S L EN oF-Fica DONALD F. VIAR-NER, OF LYNN, DIASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC:
COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK- EMERGENCY GOVERNOR Application filed October a, 1929. Serial No; 396,736.
The present invention relates to emergency governors such as are used in connection with elastic fluid turbines, for example, for effecting the closing of the emergency valve which controls the flow of elastic fluid to the turbine in case the speed of the turbine exceeds a "8 as is shown particularlyinFigs l and 2.
predetermined high value.
In the construction of emergency governors, special difficulties are met with in the case of governors intended for use with machines operating at high speeds, for example, speeds of the order of 10000 R. P. M. or
hi her and one ob'ect of m invention is to s 7 i I provide an lmproved governor well adapted for use with machines operating at speeds of this order.
A further object of my invention is to pro-- vide an improved governor which is simple in structure, comprises few parts, and is capable of being constructed at low cost.
Fora consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following description and the claims appended thereto. 7
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a sectional. view of an emergency governor embodying my invention, the governor being shown innormal position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the governor in the position it assumes when operated due to excess speed; Fig. 3 is a detail view of a trip finger;
and Fig. 4 is an endview of the governor weight.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a shaft which may be for example theshaft of an elastic fluid turbine. On. the end of shaft 1 is an extension 2 which is of a diameter somewhat less than shaft 1, and which may be either integral with shaft 1 or a separate piece connected to it. In substance, it forms a part of shaft 1. The outer end of shaft extension 2 is threaded and isindicat ed at 3,
' and on the threaded portion is a nut 4 held in position by a lock nut Beneath nut 4 is a plate 6 which forms an annular bearing for the governor weight 7.
The governor weight is in theform of a cylindrical sleeve provided at the one end with two transversely extending bearing edges 8, which engage the bearing plate 6,
permit it to close.
andat its other end with a circumferentially tapered inturn flange 9 which serves to unbalance the weight. The point of greatest unbalance which is the point where the in- ;turnedflange has the greatest radial depth is located in line with oneof the bearing edges The'governor weight 7 is held in engagement with the bearing plate 6'bya' spring 10located tralize the weight, holding it in the Fig. 1 position The spring thus serves to hold bearing edges 8 in engagement with bearing plateo'p The compression of the spring may be adjusted by adjusting the nut 4. Adjacent to the free end of weight is a trip'flnger 13, which is adapted to be engaged by the wveight to release the emergency valve and The trip; finger 13 is shown in side elevation in Fig; 3,in which Figure l iindicates the usual rod which is re leased to effect the release of the emergency valve; Trip arrangements for emergency valves are well known in the art and as the construction tobe used formsno'part of the present inventionit is not illustratedin the drawings. Any suitable arrangement may be utillzefdi' During normal operation the spring 10 'holds the weight 7 in the position shown in Fig. ljof the drawings, the spring being set under sufficient tension to hold the governor "wei ht in"the ositionshown. a ainst the action of; centrifugal force. 7 When the speed exceedsa predetermined high value, centrifugal forceactingon weight 71:0vercoms the action of'spring10, whereupon the weight assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein it engages trip finger13, moving it to release rod' l1fto effectclosing of the emergency valve. p l
By arranging the spring in themanner shown, wherein it surrounds the shaft andis parallel to the'axis of the shaft, the spring is not affected adversely by centrifugalforce due to the high speed at which the shaft rotates, since the action of centrifugal force on the spring is in a direction radial to the convolutions of the spring and not in a direction axially of the spring, a thing which at higher speeds subjects the outermost turns 5 of the spring to high stress due solely to the weight of the coils of the spring. Also, it will be seen that the governor is simple in structure, comprising few parts, all
of which may be manufactured at low cost.
In accordance with the provision of the patent statutes, 1 have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:- 1. The combination with a shaft, of an emergency governor comprising a bearing plate on the shaft, a cylindrical weight member which extends parallel to, and encloses the shaft and at one end engages the bearing plate on opposite sides of the shaft, the material at the other end of the weight being so distributed that the weight is unbalanced, and a spring which surrounds the shaft and holds the weight member in engagement with the bearing plate.
2. The combination with a shaft, of an emergency governor comprising a bearing plate on the shaft, a sleeve which surrounds the shaft and has one end in engagement with the bearing plate, the material at the other end of the sleeve being so distributed thatthe sleeve is unbalanced, and a spring which surrounds the shaft and holds the sleeve in engagement with the bearing plate. 40 3. The combination with a shaft, of an emergency governor comprising a bearing plate on. the shaft, a sleeve which surrounds the shaft and has one end in engagement with the bearing plate, and a spring which surrounds the shaft and'holds the sleeve in engagement with the bearing plate, the other end of said sleeve being provided with a circumferentially tapered flange which serves to unbalance the sleeve. b0 4. The combination with a shaft, of an emergency governor comprising a bearing plate on the shaft, a cylindrical weight member which surrounds the shaft and has on one end a bearing edge in engagement with the bearing plate, the material at the other end of said weightmember being so distributed that the weight member is unbalanced.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of September,1929.
' DONALD F. WARNER.
