Description

June 9, 1931. v H. w. s. PALMER 1,809,600
PACKING SEALED CONTAINERS CONTAINING MILK OR OTHER SUBSTANCES Fil ed Sept 20, 1929 Patented June 9, 1931 UNITED STATES rsoacoe HENRY WILLIAM SAMUEL PALMER, OF GERBARDS GROSS, ENGLAND PACKING SEALED CONTAINER-S CONTAINING MILK OR OTHEE SUBSTANCES Application filed September 20, 1929, Serial No. 393,857, and in Great Britain July 9, 1929.
This invention relates to the packing for transport of containers of conical shape sealed at one end by a circular disc and at the other by pressing its opposite sides together to form a straight diametrical seam, the whole producing what may be termed a sealed wedge-cone shape container. These containers are usually made of light material made waterproof in any suitable manner for containing milk, cream or any other suitable substance, and it has been found in packing such containers together that they getdamaged and in some cases broken during transport.
The method of packing these containers according to the present invention consists in placing them side by side in a cylindrical box or casing with their diametrical seams vertically arranged in the centre of the container, 29 preferably in contact with a central column,
and with their axes radiating from the column and with their circular bases engaging the sides of the cylindrical box or casing. In a modification of this method the containers are placed with their diametrical seams vertically arranged in vertical grooves provided for them in a column arranged in the centre of the box or casing.
The preferred method of carrying out the 30 invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of the cylindrical box 'or casing showing three of the containers packed therein in radial position, Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the box or casing and Figure 3 a plan of a removable longitudinally grooved cylinder for use as an abutment in the centre of the box or casing. In these drawings A is a cylindrical box or casing having a cylindrical wall 40 or outer side a and a fixed central column 6 preferably provided with longitudinal grooves bl.
The containers of special shape which are to be packed for transportation in the box or casing A consist of cylindrical sides a which are sealed at one end by a disc or base 01 and at the other by pressing the opposite sides together to form a straight diametrical seam 02 which when the container is made of a light material such as waxed card or paper are preferably covered by a strip of metal 08 pressed tightly on the seam 02.
The longitudinal grooves 61 instead of being formed directly in the column b may be formed in a separate cylinder 62 as shown in Figure 3, which is arranged to it on the column 'b and be removable therefrom. This enables the grooved member to be formed from sheet metal corrugated to form the grooves 61. y
In filling the box or casing A with the containers 0 their sealed diametrical seams 02 are placed vertically in the grooves blto the column b and the diameter of the box or casing A is made such that the base ends 01 engage each other and the cylindrical wall a so that they will all be held radially in position in the box creasing A in such amanner that they cannot injure each other during transport.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A packing box or casing for the reception of containers of cylindrical shape sealed at one end by a circular disc and. at the other by pressing its opposite sides together to form a straight diametrical seam, comprising a cylindrical box or casing, and a vertical column fixed in the centre of the box or casing, the column being of a depth corresponding to the length of the diametri cal seam of the container, while the distance between the column and the walls of the box or casing corresponds to the axial length of the container so as to prevent radial movement thereof when they are arranged ra dially therein side by side;
2. A packing box or casing for the reception of containers of cylindrical shape sealed at one end by a circular disc and at the other by pressing its opposite sides together to form a stralght diametrical seam, comprising a cylindrical box or casing provided with a central fixture for holding the diametrical seams of the container vertically in the cen- 95 treof the box or casing and with the axes of the receptacles radiating therefrom and their circular ends engaging the cylindrical sides of the box or casing.
3. A packing box or casing for the receplot 7 tion of containers of cylindrical shape sealed at one end by a circular disc and at the other by pressing its opposite sides together to form a straight dianietrical seam, comprising a cylindrical box or casing and a vertically grooved column situated in the centre of the box or casing, the grooves in the column being of a length and Width, corre sponding to the length and thickness of the dlametrical seams of the containers While the distance between the depth of the grooves of the column and the Walls of the vessel corresponds to the axial length of the containers so that they can be arranged side by side radially in the box or casing.
4. A packing box or casing for the reception of containers of cylindrical shape sealed at one end by a circular disc and at the other by pressing its opposite sides together to form a straight diametrical seam, comprising a cylindrical box or casing, a vertical column situated in the centre of the box or casing a removable externally and longitudinally grooved hollow cylinder fitting on the column, the external grooves in the hollow cylinder being of a length and Width corresponding to the length and thickness of the diametrical seams of the containers, while the distance between the depth of the grooves in the removable cylinder and Walls of the box or casing corresponds to the axiallength of the containers so that they can be arranged side by side radially in the box or casing. In Witness whereof I aflix my signature.
