Description

'- June 9, 1931. 7 m 1,809,319
GUARD FOR ADZES Filed NOV. 15, 1930 INVENTOR. j/en Ty O LYZl/QJZPQ A TTORNEY 7 Patented June 9, 1931 HENRY Q. $WA1 TN, OEI-IATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI I r GUARD ron AnzEs application filed. November 15, 1930. Serial no 195,966.
The object of the invention is to provide a device adapted for attachment to the conventional adze whereby the workman will be v prevented from cutting his leg or foot in the use of the tool in the event of the latter slipping as is frequently the case; to provide a guard which may be readily attached to the 7 conventional adze and spaced the desired distance from the blade; to provide a device of 1 this character which may be readily adjusted to maintain its relationwith respect to the illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plane view of the conventional adze with the invention applied in operative position thereon.
Figures 2 and 3 are respectively end and side elevations of the structure shown in Figure 1. v 1 Figure 4 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4.-4 of Figure 1.
lhe conventional adze has the handle attaching eye formed in an upward extension' 11 and it is to this latter that the guard constituting the invention is attached. The
, guard proper consists preferably of a metal 5 rod bent to provide the cutting edge shielding portion 12 and the legs 14, the latter following the side edges of the blade of the adze 7 and the former the cutting edge thereof. The legs are offset inwardly back of the blade portion of the tool, as indicated at 15, and
these offset portions are threaded, being eX- tended through eyes formed in cross-heads 16 and 17 which are recessed as indicated at 18 to provide seats in which the extension 11 rests. Nuts 19 threaded on the offset portions engage the cross-heads on opposite faces and thus serve to bring them in clamping relation with the extension 11. Q
7 Set- screws 20 and 21 are threaded centrally through the cross-heads 16 and 17 respectively and engaged in countersinks 22 formedin the outer surfaces of the end wallsofthe extensionll. While the clamping relation of the crossheads on the extension 11 may be generally relied uponito maintain thedesi'red position. ofthe guard, the set- screws 20 and 21 constitute'means for positively insuring its position, since with them set in the countersinl;s,the cross-heads may not slide up or down the extension. I p I The: nuts 19 while constituting means for effecting the clamping function of the crossheads'with the extension 11 also constitute means for adjusting the guard proper so that the shielding portion 12will be disposed in proper relationto the cutting edge of the tool and as the latter wears and is sharpened the guard may be adjusted backwar'dly tomain tain its proper relative position with refer--' ence to the cutting edge by, backing off those nuts 19which. engage the cross-head 16 and cross-head 17.
Pr eferably the extension ll is provided with series of counter-'sinksf22 on the end screwing forward the nuts which engage the vent its penetrationinto the leg or foot of the workman.
=The invention having what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In combination withan adze, a guard laterally spaced from but positioned to parallel the cuttingjedge of'the'latter and prevent its penetration into the limb of the user.
I 2. In cornbination'with anad ze, a guard 9 removably attached to the adze andliaving a cutting .edge fshielding portion arranged in a spaced relationlaterally to the cutting edge oftheadzep 3. In combination with an adze, a guard atbeen .described,
tachable to the same and having a cutting edge shielding portion parallelling but laterally spaced from the cutting edge of its blade, said guard being adjustable to maintain the desired relation of the shielding portion and the cutting edge of the adze as the latter is reduced by sharpening.
4. In combination with an adze, a guard attachable to the latter in laterally spaced relation to the blade thereof and having a cutting edge shielding portion, the guard being adjustable toward and away from the adze blade.
5. In combination with an adze, a guard attachable to the latter in laterally spaced relation tothe blade thereof and having acutting edge shielding portion, the guard being adjustable toward and away from the adze blade and adjustable longitudinally of the blade.
6. Incombination with an adze, a guard attachable to the latter in laterally spaced relation to the blade thereof and having a cutting edge shielding portion, the guard being adjustable toward and away from the adze blade and rearwardly to compensate for reduction in the length of the blade due to sharpening.
7. In'combination with an adze, a guard having a cutting edge shielding portion and connected legs, and cross-heads spanning the eye portion of the adze, said legs extending through the cross-heads and the latter being clamped onthe eye portion.
8. In combination with an adze, a guard having a cutting edge shielding portion'and connected legs, and crossheads spanning the eye portion of the adze, said legs extending through the cross-heads and the latter being clamped on the eye portion, and set-screws passing throughthe oross-heads and bearing against the end Walls of the eye portions.
9. In combination with an adze, a guard having a cutting edge shielding portion and connected legs, cross-heads spanning the eye portion of the adze, the legs extendingthrough said cross-heads and being exteriorly threaded in the region thereof, and nuts carried on said threaded portions and bearing against opposite faces of the cross-heads.
10. In combination with an adze, a guard having a cutting edge shielding portion and connected legs, cross-heads spanning the eye portion of the adze on opposite ends, said legs extending through said cross-heads and hung exteriorly threaded in the region thereof, nuts carried on the threaded portions of the legs and bearing against opposite faces of the cross-heads, and-set-screws passing centrally through the cross-heads and bearing upon the eye portion of the adze.
11. In combination with an adze, a guard having a cutting edge shielding portion and connected legs, cross-heads spanning the eye portionof the adze on opposite ends, said legs ture.
