` COMBINATION CHAIR AND BED Filed May 7, 1930 2 sheets-sheet 2 Inventor y Allo'rney I Patented June 9, 1931 l' ARTHUR WALTER, or inrvnnroonv lwrwvoniry i COMBINATION entera Arm BED j Application inea Mayr/,1936. seriairnajmaee.
The present inventionr relates to a combina tion chair and bed and has for its prime object to provide a structure which. is exceedingly simple, inexpensive to manufacture, strong '5 and durable, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, easy to manipulate, and thoroughly eiicient and reliable in use and operation. The devicer disclosed herein may be utilized both as a combination for actual use or as a toy.
TWith the above and numerous yother objects' in vview as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device embodying the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is atop plan view of-the'device embodying the features of my invention,
Figure 8 is a sectional view through the.
.device shown as used as a chair, l Figure 4 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denote a pair of side :panels adapted to reston the floor or the like to riseupwardly thereof in spaced parallel coextensive relationship with theseat panel 6 disposed between the side panels 5 interme- V diate the upper and lower ends `thereof being somewhat `closer to the upper ends thereof.V
'A leg panel 7 extends downwardly-between the panels 5 from the forward portion of the panel 6 inclining downwardly and forwardly.
rEhe panels 5 at their front edges adj aces their bottomare providedwith upwardly and forwardly inclined extension arms 8 between which is a foot'rest panel 9, f
ylhe rear edges ofthe panels 5 belowthe panel 6 arecurved inwardly as is indicated by numerals 10. Abackpanel 11 is hingedly y' r connected at 12 with the rear edge of the panel 6 and has side panels 14 mounted thereon.
Y I These side panels 14 have at their lower edges extensions 15 which are'curved tov fit snugly the curved edges 10 when the panel 11 is in extension of the panel 6 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 but the panel 11 may be raised upwardly to the position shown in Figure 3 at whi'chtimethe extensions 15 function as legs to engage the floor thereby holding the'back in an upright position so that the ydevice may he used as a chair. Arcuate slotted members 16 arepivoted asat 17 on the side panels 14 panels 5 so as to limit the swinging movement of the back with respect tothe bottom panel 6.
and receive pins 18 projecting from the side this art without a more detailed description Y thereof. Y i v y The present embodiment of the invention has been `disclosed in considerable detail merelyI for the ypurposes of exempliiic ation -since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the state ment of theinvention and the above descrip- 'p f 'lt will `be apparent that changes' in thedetails of construction, and in the combination and arrangement ofparts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of i.
the kinvention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages. l ltiaving thus described my invention, what l ciaim as new is: f' y 1. A device of theclass described comprising a pair of side panels disposed in spaced parallel -coextensive relationship to each yother and adapted to rest on the floor ror the like torise verticallytherefrom, a seat panel extending between the' side panels, a
back Danel hine'ed'to therear ed `e of the seatV panel, side panels on theback panel having extensions to engage the first mentioned',kv
panels to hold the back panel in coextension ofthe seat panel andfor engagement with thefcor to retain the back panel at an angle to said seat panel.
y 2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of side panels disposed in spaced parallel coextensive relationship. to p each other and adapted to rest on the floorA on the`- like to rise vertically therefrom, a seat panel extending between the side panels, a back panel hinged to the rear edge of the seat panel, side panelsv on the back panel having` 2 i,eo9,226
extensions to engage the first mentioned panels to hold the back panel in coextension of the seat panel and for engagement with the floor to retain the back panel at an angle 5 to said seat panel, the lirst mentioned side panels having forwardly directed extensions at their lower ends and a foot rest therebetween. y
3. A device of the class described compris- 10 ing a pair of side panels disposed in lspaced parallel coeXtensive relationship to each other and adapted to rest on the floor or the i like to rise vertically therefrom, a seat panel extending between the side panels, aback panelhinged to the rear edge of the seat panel, side panels on the back panel having extensions to 'engage the first mentioned panels to hold the back panel in ooextension of the seat panel and for engagement with the floor to retainy the back panel at an. angle to said seat panel. the first mentioned side panels having forwardly directed extensions at their lower ends and a foot rest therebetween, arcuate slotted members pivotally engaged on one pair of side panels and receiving pins projecting from the other side panels. Y
4. A combination bed and chair comprising a pair ofside members, a fixed seat panel arranged between said side members, a back panel hinged to said seat panel and capable of swinging movement relative thereto, said back panel provided with extensions adapted Y to engage said sides when the back is swung to a substantially horizontal position, and to engage the'oor when theback panel is swung to a substantially vertical position for rev taining said back panel in the last-mentioned position.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
