FOLDABLE NCTE,PAD HOLDER FOR STENOTYPE OPERATORS Filed Sept. 39. 19:50 4 sheets-sheet Patented June 9, 1931 ALFRED C. ALLEN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FOLDALBLE NOTE PAID HOLDER FOR O IXPE OPERATORg Application filed September 30, 1930. Serial No. 485,524.
The object of my invention is'to provide a. convenient foldable holder for the use of stenotype operators for holding the continuous paper pads on which stenotype notes 5 are made and to permit of readily shifting this pad to bring a new sect-ion of the notes into view as transcription on the typewriter progresses.
It is also an object of my invention to provide such a holder which permits of convenient access to the note pad to apply it and to remove it and also which permits of making notationson the portion or section of the stenotype notes presented to view for trans- 15 scription and which will also permit the paper to fall into a smooth position in a separate compartment as the notes are being transcribed.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a device which can be readily folded into a sufficiently compact flat package to permit of its being readily inserted in an ordinary manuscript case.
It is also an especial object of my invention to provide a device of this character in its completely folded position which in addition to operating efficiently can also be manufactured at relatively small cost.
I attain these and other objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in use;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention for carrying in a manuscript case or the like;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the holder with the side 34 removed;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section through the invention;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the invention;
Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 66 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 V7 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the invention with the flaps 21 and 31in their folded position;
i Fig. 9 is'a diagrammatic view of the invention in partly folded position the numbered arrows indicatin the order of the folding of the various members of the holder; and
Fig. 10 is a similar diagrammatic view of the final stage of foldingthe holder.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a base member I, having opposite longitudinal folded over edge strips 2 to engage the strip4 on which the stenotype note pad C is. placed. The strip. 4 has an upturned rear end or flange 5. and an upturned front 5 edge or flange 6, as shown in Figs. 4 and 8.
I also provide araised portion 7fto which is afiixed the spring 12 attached to one end of the roller 10, which roller is positioned between the upt-urned end 6 and the raised por 5 tion 9, which functions as a stop for the front end of the stenotype pad. I provide roller 10 with an axle 11, the end of which projects to. rest on the small raised member or platform at the free end of the roller and which is mounted at latch 13, pivoted at 14 and provided with a small knob 15 at its. free end.
I provide a vertical side member 16, hingedly connected with the base 1 by the hinges 3. The side member 16 has a slanting front edge, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with the tongue 19 adapted to engage in the slot 32 of front strip, 31. Side wall 16 is provided with hinged upper end extension 21 connected with member 16 by suitable hinges 20, as shown in Fig. 8;. I also provide a. vertical rear wall 23 hingedly connected to side wall 16 by suitable hinges 18. I also provide a horizontal strip 27 for holding the transcribed stenotype notes. Strip 27 is hingedly con nected to side wall 16 by. hinges 17, as shown in Figs. 3 and 8'; and is also detachably fastened to rear wall 23 by a tongue. 24 which is insertable through a suitable slot 29 in the rear wall 23. The rear wall 23 is provided with a suitable, latch tongue 25 adapted to releasably engage a. latch or projection 26 on member- 1, as'shown in Fig. 5.
I provide a hinged strip 31 mounted by hinges on the front end of horizontal strip 27 .and releasably secured in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, by a. tongue 19-, side wall 16 which engages in the lower slot 32 of member 21, and a tongue 22 on side wall extension 21 which engages the, upper slot 19 1 3rd in 22, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8. The front member 31 is provided with a slot 33 in its upper portion, the slot being of slightly greater width than the strip of stenotype note paper, to permit the strip of note paper to move across same and to be guided by the adjacent portions of the front member 31, as shown in Fig. 1. The horizontal strip 27 is provided with a recessed portion 28 to permit the operator to grasp the portion A of the stenotype pad to remove same when desired.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, I provide a removable side plate member 34 having a bottom flange 35 to seat under member 1 and a rear vertical flange 36'to engage around the rear wall23. This side wall is an optional and also a removable member and may be used as a cover member in packing the device.
The operation of the invention will be understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings. The stenotype note pad which is a continuous strip of paper folded back and forth is placed in the lower compartment on the slidable strip 4 and as first placed in the machine all the paper is on the portion of the pad designated C. Roller 10 is brought down from its normal vertical to its operative horizontal position and is fastened there by the latch 13, as shown in Fig. 8. V The forward end of the note pad' C rests against the projection or guide strip 9 and is fed under the roller 10 and then passed upwardly over the slotted portion 33 of the front member 31.
As the operator transcribes his notes on the typewriter later he will grasp the strip of paper B and move it up so that it will gradually fall into .a new pad A on the horizontal strip 27, as shown in Fig. 1. As the strip 2 is slidably mounted on the base 1 it is possible to pull out the entire pad to inspect same to determine how many more notesthere are tobe transcribed, whenever this information is desired. Or the slidable strip 4 may be pulled forward in order that a longer expanse of notes may be in view before the operator if that is desired. A less frequent shifting of the note paper is thereby made possible. The guide strip or projection 9 at one end and the upturned flange at the other, function as guides for the stenotype note pad to hold the pad against any irregular movements; l
The device may be readily folded for carrying in a manuscript case and to attain this result, side plate extension 21 is first folded outwardly as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 8
and the front member 31 is folded clownwardly on horizontal strip 27 as indicated by the arrow also in Fig. 8. The horizontal strip 27 and front member 31 are then folded upwardly as indicated by the arrow marked Fig. 9. The vertical end member 23 is then pulled inwardly and the base members 1 and 4 are folded upwardly so as to provide a compact flat package over which is placed the detachable side wall 34, as shown in Fig. 2, to function as a cover member.
It is within the contemplation of my invention, if desired, to omit the member 34. It is also within the contemplation of my invention, if desired, to omit the side wall extension 21; also the roller 10 may be mounted in any suitable manner, the preferred form being illustrated in Figs. 3 and 8 of the drawings.
It is also within the contemplation of my invention, if desired, to omit the hinges connecting the various walls .and strips and make theconnection of these members rigid so as to provide a holder which is not foldable but which is otherwise exactly as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
