Description

Jung z, 1931. A. BAUM 1,808,336
all! I Patentecl June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ISAAC A. BAUM, O]? CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Application fi1ed February 21, 1929, Seria1 N0. 341,740. Renewed Inne 12, 1930.
My invention relates to metal door frames and particularly to an improvement on or modification of the corner connection illustrated in my copending application, Serial ,5 N0. 829,320, filed December 31, 1928.
An object of the invention here disolosed is to provicle a simple form of interlocking connection between the head and sicle frames of a combined buck ancl jamb in which the parts 1 are simply anal easily formed and assembled.
Tl1e invention Will be more readily umlerstoocl by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figs. 1 ancl 2 are perspective views of the encl portions of head ancl sicle frames, in position reacly to be assemblecl by slicling interlocking engagement of ehe respective arts, ancl Fig. 3 is a sectional view through ehe assembly, ehe view being substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 assuming the interlocking parts of Fig. 1 to l1ave been placecl in final position.
In the drawings, I have illustrated a combined buck, jamb and stop 0f generally channel form. The head piece comprises a web 10 constituting tl1e jamb, a door stop 11 formed out of the web ancl sicle fianges 12, 13 adaptecl to snugly fit the tile 01 otl1er masonry Wall.
Welded to the face of the flanges 12, 13 is a continuous angle piece, the part 14 of which is seoured to the flange and the portion 15 of which is perpenclicular thereto. The margin 16 constituting a plaster ground and terminal is bent at an angle in the usual manner.
The means for interlocking the hea l and side frames comprise an angle plate, one portion 17 of which is welclecl to a flange of the head f1ame and the angular portion 18 of which projects downwarclly ab a right angle ancl carries a lateral flange or projection 19 on the insicle eclge adapted for slicling and interloclcing engagement with a short strip 20 having a rebent portion 21, the strip being secured on the inside face of the perpendioular 7 portion 22 of a plaster terminal that is secured to the outside face of the flange 23 of the side frame channel. The portions 18 of the angle plates are joined by means of a flangecl member 24 having openings 25 formed therein.
'Il1e sicle fr'ame member consists in a web 26 and sicle flmges 23, 27. At the upper encl the fianges ate slit ancl bent inwardly toprovicle ears 28, 29 having openings 30 therein that regiscer with the-openings 25 in the member 24. When the parts are assembled by sliding interlocking eingagement, the parts Wlll. occupy the pos'ition shown in Fig. 3. A W00d block 31 is placecl in the vertical' frame membe1 ancl nails 32 are driven into the block Y through registering apertures 33 in the parts 24, 28. This serve s to hold the head ancl Side frame memb'ers 1 against separation. The Woocl block serves also as a means of attachment of a temporary braing member which may be a piece of 2 x 4 (not shown) that extends to tl1e ceiling, the lower end being nailed through the opening in the metal mombers into the woocl block.
The simplicity of the clesign Will Commencl itself both from mariufacturing ancl installirig standpoints. The plain and.simple plaster terminal which is coritint1ous around the opening insures a proper finish and the Short interlocking member which is installed only als the corners on the side frames is easily and quickly Welded in plaoe. Various ohanges ancl modifications may be macle in 1 the construction shown, and I do 1'101; W1Sh to be limited except as indicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a door frame, the combination of heacl and sicle frame members of channel shape in cross section with the fianges projecting away from t he door opening, a continuous angular membei constituting a plaster terminal and grouncl secured to the face of the fiange of the channel, an angle platze secured 130 a fiange of one frame member and having a lateral projection ancl a socketmember secured 130 the insicle of the plaster terminal for engagement by saicl projection.
2. In a door frame, the combination of bead ancl si ole frame members of channel shape in cross section withthe flanges proj ecting away from the cloor opening, a continuous angular member constituting a plaster tern1inal vand '1"Gil ground securecl t0 the faee of the flange of the channel, an angle plate secured to a flange of one frame member ancl having a lateral proj ection ancl means insicle of the plaster terminal member aclapted to be engaged by ancl interlock with tl1e lateral projection on the angle plaj:e.
3. In a fcl oor frarne, the cornbinatipn of h ea cl ancl sicle frame rnembers of ehannel shape in cross section, a separate angular membef acting as a plaster terminal we'lcled to an outsicle face of a flange 0f a channel, an angle plate one leg of which is permanently secur(ecl to one fra1ne member and the otl1e r leg f wh ich lies parallel t0 an0ther frame men1ber and is aglapl;egl f r elicl ing interl ocking engagemenj;
therewith, means 011 the angle pla'bfe ancl wlthn t 1 l'aster t rm na m m f uri g interlgeking engagement, a W0 0d block in one 0f sairl frarnernembers ancl means passing threuah o :lapp I Q f th@ fmme an d into saicl weod block for holcling the ram s ga ns z pa a i 4 In a doo r frame the combination of heacl an cl side frame rnernbersv 0f channel shape in cnoss secfcion with the flanges projecting away 1Emmthedoor op ningpor io o th a ge o f the sicle fra me being cut an cl bent inwarclly t0 lie at right angles t0 th eir original plane, angle plates one leg o f ea ch 0f which is secure d to the ll eacl frame and the other leg adapt.el t0 lie parallel to the flanges of the sicle frame, a web joining said oth'er legs ancl adaptecl to lie in contaet with saicl inWarclly bent portions of the flanges, a lateral flange projecting from the insicle vertigzal edge of one of Ehe saicl other legs, a plaster cerrnlnal and grouncl projecting from a flange of a side frame, and means within the limits of said plaster terminal acting as a socket to receive said lateral flange.
In testimony whereof I hav.e alfixed my sig nature.
' ISAAC A. BAUM.
