Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED/STATES PATENT OFFICE RAYMOND D. HYATT AND RAE E. COCHR-AN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE D. L. AULID COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A. CORPORATION 01 OHIO NAME PLATE Application filed December 22, 1928. Serial No. 328,008.
This invention relates to improvements in the method and means of attaching name plates to shells.
It more particularly relates to improvements in the method and means of attaching name plates to radiator shells, and consists in attaching to the name plate discs or plates having struckup therefrom lugs adapted to be inserted through slits in the shell, for the purpose of holding the name plate in engagement with the shell. This isaccomplished more particularly by twisting the lug' after it has been inserted through the slit in the shell in such a way that'the name plate is drawn in close engagement with the shell and held there by the twist on the lug within the shell.
There is shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of this method and means, which is shown here by way of illustration.
It is particularly an object of our invention to insure absolutely the proper vertical positioning of the name plate. This is particularly necessary on a horizontal elongated plate or a square plate.

The numeral 1 is used to designate a shell to which the name plate is to be attached. This shell may be the shell of a radiator, or any other body, composed of thin sheet metal. This shell has a slot pierced therein, as indicated by the numeral 2. While; in each of Figures 1 and 2 there is shown only one of these slots, yet there maybe any number depending upon the size of the plate and the desired security in holding the plate to the shell. If the plate is small one disc 5 may be used for holding the plate to the shell but in case the name plate is long and large two or more discs5, as shownin Figures 3 and 4, or plates 5 as shown in Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8, may be used. The name plate is indicated by'the numeral 3 and is such a plate as is usually found in automobile radiator shells. As frequently the case in name plates, the name plate here shown has return edges, as indicated by the numeral 4;, which tend to hold the body of the plate away from the shell. y As shown in Figures land 2, there is attached to the name plate a disc indicatedby the numeral 5. This discis soldered, or attachedto the name plate by other means, and has struckup therefrom an attachin and aligning lug 6. This lug is adapted to e inserted through the slot 2 in the shell, and after being inserted through the slot is twisted, as
indicated by thenumeral 7, shown in Figures 1 and 2. h
When the return edges are large as indicated in Figure 7, thelugs may be formed with shoulders thereon, as indicated bythe numeral 8. These shoulders engage the outer surface of the shell while therestricted part extends through the slot in the shell and is twisted to hold the nameplate in engagement with the shell. When the return edges are slight, as indicated in Figure 2, the metal part of the shell may bedrawn backward at the slot so that when the lug is] extended through the slot and twisted, the twist of the 7 lug will be some distance from the point of attachment to the plate. By this means the tendency to rip the plate or disc from the name plate is avoided, the twist being some distance from the point of attachment of the disc or plate to the name plate.
This draw-back part of the shell is indicated by-the numeral 9, and is shown in Figure 2. In each of Figures 5, 6,7 and 8-. there are shown plates 5- having struckup therefrom two lugs. These lugs are the same general form and shape as the lugs shown in or in combination with other plates, or with the discs shown in Figures 3 ande. In Figures'9"and 10 there is showna modified form of the plate5 'with'the' ends turned'up. These ends may be of the general shape that is shown in Figures 3 and 4 and may haveon" the ends of the lugs shoulders as indicated in Figure 4, or may be without shoulders, as indicated 'in-Figure 3.
There is shown here a simple and convenientmeans andmethod of attaching name plates,'and 'other plates of similar character toshells. The only requirement necessary is that'the dis'csor plates' be'attacl'ied to the name plate, and have struckup therefrom lugs and these lugs be inserted through slots in the shell, and after being inserted through said slots the ends aretwisted so as to closely draw the name plate in contact withthe shell and hold it that position. 7 Whenever it is desired to remove the name plate'all that is necessary is that the inner end of "the lugbe twisted'in the direction op-' posite to that of the original twist so that the lug may be withdrawn from the slot and the name plate removed. This may be done without marring or in any way destroying the surface of the shell, or marring or de stroying the nature of the slot.
This attachment may be easily'manufactured, readily placed'npon the name-plate and'the 'as'semblyr'eadi-ly' attached'to the shell,
and 'at the minimum of expense.

In the method of attaching a nameplate to a shell, forming a plate of metal and strikingup therefrom a lug, attachingsaid plate to a nameplate, forming in said shell a slot, inserting said lug through said slot and twistingthe end of the lug adjacent'the slot to engage over the edges of -the'-s1"ot with the cross sectional' area' of'said lug across the slot and in engagement with the edges of said slot whereby the name plate is drawn to and lug struckup therefrom attached to said name plate, said lug extending through and closely fitting in said slot, and a twist on the end of said lug engaging the shell whereby the name plate is drawn to and held on the shell.
4. In combination with a shell having a slot therein with the material adjacent the slot drawn backwards, a name plate having a lug thereon extending through said slot,
and means on said lug engaging the drawnback edges of said slot to'hold the nameplate on the shell.
5. In combination with a shell having a slot therein with the material adjacent the slot drawn backwards, a name plate, a plate having a lug struckup therefrom attached to saidname plate, said lug extending through said slot, and a twist on said lug adjacent said shell engaging the drawn-back edges of said slot to hold the name plate on the shell. In combination with a shell having a slot therein, a name plate,a plate havinga shouldered lug struckup therefrom attached to said name plate, said lug extending through said slot with the shoulder in'engagement with the shell and the end distorted to enga e the shell to hold the name plate on the shel 7. In combination, a shell with an elon-v gated slot, a name plate,'an elongated attaching and aligning plate on said name plate having a lug closely fitting within said slot to attach and align the name plate, and adistortedend on said lugengaging said shell for drawing the name plate tothe shell and fastening it without destroying the alignment thereof.
