This invention relates to improvements in machines for making paper boxes, the improvements being a evelopment of the machines set forth in my copending application for patents, Serial #311,859, filed October 11, 1928 and Serial #360,767, filed May 6, 1929.
The machine consists of an arrangement of a relatively fixed die and a' series of movable dies which move progressively into 0 erating relation with the fixed die, the ox blanks bein moved singly to the fixed die in the required order for orming the boxes by the coaction of the dies. The movable dies are supported on a rotatable die carrier and are moved through a circle, being equally spaced one from another so that the box forming operations occur in regular sequence.
An object attained in the improvements herein set forth consists in the rovision of means in the fixed die which e ect compensating adjustments of the die to thearc of movement of the movable dies during the box forming operations. This arrangement also adapts the dies for a greater range of box sizes, having particular reference to the depth of the boxes.
A further object attained in the invention consists in means provided in the dies for efiecting lateral foldings coincident with vertical foldings of the box blanks.
The machine as set forth is organized for large output, the machine structure being compact and durable, and comprised of mech anism which will not readily get out of order.

he die end of the machine structure consists in a supporting frame 15 which is provided with a suitable base for supporting-the stationary die --A, and with a rotatable carrier 18 for the movable dies -B. Carrier 18 isdriven by a motor 19 through a chain drive 20, worm gears 21 anda gear train 22 23, 24, 25. The feeding mechanism for the box blanks is driven from the motor 19 through gearing 20-23 "and a chain drive 26, 27, 28. The feeding mechanism for the box blanks is of a well known type, consistin of a table 29 for'supporting a stack of blan C, upper and lower feed rolls 31-32, the lower roll eing traversed by a belt carrier 33 which co-- acts with a unit of tensioning feed rolls 34, and a series of carrier supportm rolls 35 for g ovin the box blanks singly to the stationary Means for applying adhesive to the box blanks for forming the box structure are indicated at -D. The illustration in Fig. 1 of the machine structure for delivering the box blanks to the dies, including the mechanism for applying adhesive to the blanks, is of well known character in the art to which the invention relates and is shown conventionally only for illustrating the invention in one form.
The improvements comprised in the invention relate to the stationary and movable dies and consist particularly in the provision of means in the stationary die which cause the die to expand and contract to compensate for the are through which the movable dies are rotated in the operation of forming the boxes.
The structure of the stationary die consists of a base 36 which is fixed on the frame of themachine and has a rectangular opening 37 and a laterally extended opening 38 through the inner side wall of the base to proside walls of the stationary die, and base form the plates 40 which are formed integrally with the walls 39 and extend laterally outward therefrom, the plates being retained on base 36 by guides 41 which are secured to base 36 and overlap the ends of plates 40.
Members 3940 are spring tensioned inward by springs 42 supported on stems 43 which are fixed to parts 39 and are slidable in brackets 44, springs 42 being compressed between the brackets and parts 39. The extent of inward movement of the slidable parts 39-40 on the outer section of the die is regulated by adjusting screws 45 supported in brackets 46, the outward movement of parts 3940 on both sides of the die being yieldable to the pressure of the movable dies as they pass through the stationary die, thus compensating for the arc of movement of the movable dies in the operation of forming a box and the variable pressure on the stationary die that results from it. The inner die members 3940 are in two sections, being spaced one from the other to register with.
the opening 38 to provide clearance for the movable dies.
The end walls 47 of the stationary die are fixed on base 36. ,The end walls are slotted vertically on their inner faces as indicated at 47a for receiving fingers 481 which are pivoted at 49 on the under side of base 36, the fingersbeing tensioned inward by springs 49:; and provided with extensions 50, which are engaged by the movable dies: for actuating the fingers to effect a folding operation on the box blanks. Spring blades 51 arranged on the inner faces of parts 39 and extended below the stationary die act to sustain the formed box on the movable dies as the boxes are moved along to the pressure sealing devices. Fingers 39a extended upward from members 39 also function in the operations of forming the boxes as will presently be described.
The structure of the movable dies consist in i a head member 52 secured to an. arm 18 of the rotatable die carrier B, the opposite ends of parts 52 being offset for sup. orting members 53, the side and end faces 0 which are flush with the adjacent faces of members 52, parts 53 being pivoted on members 52 as indicated at 54, members 52 being recessed on their under side for effecting the assembly. Parts 53 are connected one with the other is a sprin 55 which acts to tension the parts ownwar Slots 56 in the ends of members 52-53 provide operating clearance for fingers 48 when the dies are in the operating relation with the stationary die. Fingers 57 secured to members 53 are engaged by pins 58 supported in brackets 59 which acts to move members 53 upward on their pivots 54, springs 55 acting to retract the members to normal position. I The operation of forming a box is as fol ows:
The box blank 61 is delivered over the stationary die in the position indicated, the side portions a of the blank being directl over the side walls 39, the ortions 6 over t e end walls 47, and the en flaps a resting on the folding fingers 39a. When one of t e movable dies engages the blank and forces it through the stationary die walls 39 act to fold sides a upward at right angles, fingers 39a acting in advance of the folding of the sides -a to fold flaps c at right angles to the sides, and walls 47 acting to fold flaps b upward at right angles. As the movable die progresses through the forming operation fingers 57 of members 53 of the movable die are engaged by pins 58 which act to move members 53 upward for opening the die at the ends. The die then engages extensions of fingers 48 and aetuates the fingers inward which acts to fold the outer portions d of ends b of the blank inward at right angles to portions 5. Upon die members 53 passing out of engagement with pins 58, springs act to return members 53 to normal position, the further movement of the dies acting to complete the fold of portions -(Z against the inner face of the box. This latter movement also acts to fold flaps -e against the inner faces of sides a. I
The formed boxes remain on the movable dies as the dies move into engagement with the pressure sealing mechanism which consists of opposite series of pressure rollers 60 arranged in the arc of movement of the dies. Rollers 60 are supported in frames 61 which may be spring-tensioned and adjusted laterally of the machine in any suitable manner according to the size of the movable dies, which is determined by the size of the boxes.
In view of the end flaps al and corner reinforcing flaps e the boxes require pressure sealing on four faces, the rollers 60 acting to seal fiaps d to the inner end faces of the box, and opposite series of spring blades 62 acting to seal flaps e to the inner side faces at the upper corners of the box. The boxes are removed from the dies as they pass from the pressure sealing mechanism by any suitable means, such as the brush 63.
I claim as my invention:
1. A machine for making paper boxes including a die member movable through an are into operating relation with a relatively stationary die yieldable to the pressure of the movable die when the dies are in said relation to compensate for the arc of movement of the movable die, and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative to the stationary die, prethe dies are in said relation to com ensate for the are of movement of the movable die,
and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative "to the stationary die preliminary to (florming the boxes by the coaetion of said ice.
3. A machine for making paper boxes including a die member movable through an are into operatin relation with a relatively stationary die yieldable under tension outward oppositely from the center of the die to the pressure of the movable die when the dies are in said relation to compensate for the are of movement of the movable die and means for appl ing adhesive to box blanks and for positlonmg the blanks relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming the boxes by the coaetion of sai dies.
4. A machine for making aper boxes including a die member movaiile through an are into operating relation with a relatively stationary die having opposite walls tensioned toward the center of the die and yieldable outward to the pressure of the movable die when the dies are in said relation to compensate for the arc of movement of the movable die and means'for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming the boxes by the coaetion of said dies.
5. 6. A machine for making paper boxes including a die member movable through an are into operating relation with a relatively stationary die having opposite walls tensioned toward the center of the die and yieldable outward to the pressure of the movable die when the dies are coacting one with the other to compensate for the arc of movement of the movable die, devices tensioned toward the center of the die acting to support the box blanks during the operation of the dies for forming boxes, and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming the boxes by the coaetion of said dies.

A machine for making pa r boxes including a relatively stationary ie having a part operable for effecting a folding o a box blank, an actuator fixed relative to said die, a movable die acting to operate said part and having a part operated by said actuator for providing clearance in the movable die for said portion of the box blank as it is being folded, and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming the boxes by the-coaction of said dies.

A machine for making paper boxes including a relatively stationary die havin a part operable for efiecting a folding 0% a box blank, an actuator in fixed relation to said die, a movable die acting to operate said part and having a part spring tensioned in normal relation and operable by said actuator for providing clearance in the movable die for said portion of the box blank as it is being folded, and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming the boxes by the coaction of said dies.

A machine for making paper boxes including a relatively stationary die having a part operable for effecting a partial folding of a box blank, a movable die acting to operate said part and having a part operable for providing clearance in the movable die for said portion of the box blank as it is being folded, said part of the movable die acting to complete said fold of the box blank, and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming of the boxes by the coaction of said dies.

A machine for making paper boxes including a relatively stationary die having a part operable. for efiecting a partial folding of a box blank, a die movable in the plane of said part and having operating clearance therefor, said movable die including a part operable for providing clearance in the movable die for said portion of the box blank as it is being folded, said part of the movable die acting to complete said fold of the box blank, and means for applying adhesive to box blanks and for positioning the blanks 55 relative to the stationary die preliminary to forming-the boxes by the coaction of said dies.
