This invention relates to an exhaust trap construction adapted for use generally in connection with .the treatment of exhaust from internal combustion engines and par- ?6 ticularly for use in connection with the bustion engine.
exhaust trap of Letters Patent 1,673,619 issued to me on June 12, 1928 and with the apparatus disclosed in my application Serial Number 82,312,'fi1ed January 19, 1926 for an improved apparatus and method for treating exhaust of hydro-carbon engines.
It is aimed to provide a novel construction which is closed at the time the explosions occur so as to nullify the incidental sound and also to provide a construction which prevents any back pressure from entering through the exhaust pipe to the pistons or cylinders of the motor.
Another object is to provide a construction employing a novel valve which is adapted to be automatically opened through the action of the small flow of exhaust to permit the full volume of exhaust to escape and air from the atmosphere to enter and automatically close the valve construction.
The more specific objects and advantages will in part be pointed out and otherwise become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

to compress binding material as at 13. Any suitable means may be employed for attaching the section 11 to the exhaust pipe 10 irrespective of differences in size or otherwise according to different makes of automobiles.
The exhaust gases are delivered into the section 11 and flow thence into a tubular extention 14 on a diaphragm 15 which is bolted as at 16 to flanges 17 and 18 provided on section 11 and diaphragm 15, respectively. A gasket 19 is interposed between the flanges 17 and 18.
The gases are adapted to escape from the cylinder 14 through one or more ports 20 provided in its peripheral wall, which ports are normally closed by a cap valve 21 slidably telescoped over the periphery of cylinder 14 and at its free edge adapted for engagement with a gasket or packing as at 22 which is held in place by the bolts 16 and by a flange 23, also held in place by such bolts 16.
The flange 23 is part of a hood 24 which surrounds and is relatively large with respect to the cylinder 14 and valve 21. The end wall of cylinder 14 as designated 25 has a port 26 therethrough which is normally closed by a tapered valve 27 of plug form, carried by a stem 28. The stem 28 has an enlarged screw threaded portion 29 which is threaded in a suitable opening in the end wall of the cap valve 21 and is also engaged by nuts 30 screw threaded thereto, and one of which serves as a lock nut for the other, such nuts binding the plug 27 tightly against the inner surface of the end wall of cap valve 21. Hood 24 is open to the atmosphere at 31.
Fastened to the end wall 32 of hood 24, is a supplemental hood 33, by means of screws 34. The stem 28 is slidably mounted in the outer end wall of supplemental hood 33 and the wall 32 is cut away as at 34 to accommodate movement of nuts 30 and adjacent parts. An expansive coil spring 35 surrounds the stem'28, bearing against the wall 33 and the nuts 30, thus urging the plug 27 normally to its seat and the cap valve 21 normally to closed position An annular flange 36 projects forwardly from the wall 25 and is disposed about the opening 26 and plug 27.

To this end, a lever 37 is pivoted at 87 to the supplemental hood 323 and it has a lower-bifurcated end 38str-addling the stem 28 and-bearing against an abutment 39 thereon. Lever 37' is maintained adjacent the hood 33 at its lower-end by an expahsivespring-O, engaging the same and also engaging a bracket 4*1 secunedi in 7 place by one of the screws 34-.
