rlhis invention pertains to devices of the character designed for silencing exhaust gases.
An object of this invention is to produce a device oi' this character having nianimum eiiectiveness and one ron which, when ein cessive pressure oil the gases occurs, relie-i2 oit the excessive pressure will take place autoniatically.l
Another object is to produce a silencer having a silencing' head which can be thrown out oi commission when it is desired to relieve the silencer of all back pressure so that the engine with which the silencer is connected will produce more power.
Another Objectis to make provision for adjustment of the silencer so that exhaust of the gases from various sizes of engines will take place Without noise and Without material back pressure.

There is provided an exhaust expansion chamber l oi any suitable size and shape. Said chamber l, in the instance shov/n inthe drawings, is in the torni of a cylinder having an openend or mouth orminOr an outlet 2 anc. said cylinder is provided the end opposite to the outlet `with a stationary head 3 having an inlet port i adapted to be connected with the exhaust pipe, not shown, of an internal combustion engine. The ring 8 is provided with outstanding lugs or ears 10 embracing a head-operating member in the form of a bell crank lever ll which is pivoted by a pin l2 to the ears 10. rl`hus it is clear that the head 7 is movably inounted in the outlet 2. @ne arm of the bell crank lever ll is fastened by rivets 13 or equivalents to the head 7 and the other arm oi said lever may be provided with an operating' rod lei which may be extended to any convenient point for operation. When the silencer is used on an automobile the operating rod la will preferably be connected to the usual muiile cutout means of the automobile, so as to be conveniently operated bv the driver of the automobile.
T he head 7 is yieldingly held in closed position on its seat 5 as in solid lines in Fia'. 2 by means of a spring 15 att-ached to the' outer arm of the bell crank lever. When the device is installed in position, the spring l5 will be connected to a suitable stationary support, not shown.

"The valve 24- is provided with any de, sired number of longitudinally extending openings in the form of rectangular slots 27 ies which extend from adjacent the head 25 about twothirds the length ot the valve, more or less.
The head 25 is provided with a port 28 opening into the interior of the valve.
vrlhe valve 24 is provided with a partition 29 extending transversely of its bore so as to still further deflect the gases andt cause silencing of the exhaust thereof. 1t is not absolutely necessary to the functioningv of 'the device that it be constructed with the partition 29, but such construction is preterable.
lln practice, assuming that the inlet l is connected to the exhaust port of an internal combustion engine, and that the head 'Z is in closedvposition, as in Fig. 2, the exhaust gases will pass from the engine through the port e into the exhaust chamber 1 and will expandtherein. .Gases Will pass through the ports 21 into the chamber 19 and through the port 28 and inner -ends of the slots 27 into the interior of the valve 24,
and gases will passfrom the valve 24 into 25 the chamber 20 and thence through the outlet 23 to the atmosphere. Some Ott the gases will "pass from the chamber 19 through the foorts 22 to the chamber 20 and thence through the outlet 23. Y
rlhe valve 24 will preferably be adjusted so that the silencer head 7 will normally be held closed against the pressure of the rases in the chamber 1 by the spring 15. l for any reason excessive pressure ot1 the exhaust gases should develop in the exhaust. chamber 1, the pressure of said gases will openv the head 7 outward against. the tension'of the spring 15 so that the gases can readily flow through the outlet.2 of the chamber 1 to relieve the pressure.'v

ln former constructions the muihe' cutout is located between the engine and the si lencer, but in this invention the Inutile cutout constituted by the movable head 7 is located at the exhaust end of the silencer chamber so that even when the head is in open position some silencing eiect is produced by 'the mullling eect of the exhaust chamber 1.
l claim:
1. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, and a head movably mounted in the outlet, and adapted to be moved out ot axial alinement with the outlet, said head being adapted to admit of the passage of gas therethrough.
2. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and on outlet, a head movably mounted in the outlet, and adapted to be moved out of axial alinement lwith the outlet, said head being adapted to admit of the passage ot gas therethrough, and means yieldingly holding the head in closedposition.
3. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, and al pivotally mounted head at the outlet, said head being adapted to admit of the passage of gas therethrough.
4. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a pivotally -mounted head at the outlet, said head being adapted to admit ot the passage of gas therethrough, and means yieldingly holding the head in closed position.
5. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, and a chambered head movably mounted in said outlet, there being ports' through the inner -Wall ot the head and an outlet in the outer 4chamloered head having an outlet and movably mounted in the outlet or the expansion chamber, and adjustable valve means to regulate the loW of gases trom the expansion chamber to the chamber of the head.
8. A `silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a head movably mounted in the outlet of the expansion chamber, and adjustable valve leemte chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a
hollow head movably mounted in the outlet and having a partition in its interior to separate the interior into two chambers, there being an outlet from one chamber of the head, ports opening through the parti tion, and other ports opening from the other chamber of the head to the exterior thereof.

A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a hollowv head movably mounted in the outletand having a partition in its interior to separate the interior into two chambers, there being an outlet from one chamber of the head, and a tubular valve projecting from the expansion chamber side of the head through the partition and provided with longitudinally extending slots.
13. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a hollow head mounted in the outlet and having a partition in its interior to separate the interior into two chambers, there being an outlet from one chamber of the head, ports opening through the partition, other ports opening from the other chamber ot the head to the exterior thereor", and a tubular valve projecting from the expansion chamber side of the head through the partition and provided with longitudinally eX- tending slots.
14. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a hollow head movably mounted in the outlet and having a partition in its interior to separate the interior into two chambers, there being an outlet from one chamber of the head, ports opening through the partition, other ports opening from the other chamber of the head to the exterior thereof, and a tubular valve projecting from the eX- pansion chamber side of the head through the partition and provided with longitudinally extending slots.
l5. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, movably mounted silencer means at the outlet end of the chamber, and means to move the silencer means away from the outlet.
16. A silencer comprising an expansion chamber having an inlet and an outlet, mov-A ably mounted silencer means at the outlet end ot the chamber provided with a port open to the atmosphere at all times, and means to yieldingly hold the silencer means closed against the expansion chamber against relatively low pressures et gases in the expansion chamber, said last named means allowing the silencer means to be moved away from the chamber against higher pressure of the gases.
