Description
May 26, 1931.
w. N. VANCE CHECKBOOK Filed Sept. 14. 1928 Patented May 26, 1931 uNrrE STATES PATENT OFFICE WALTER N. VANCE, OF CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO LYON METAL PRODUCTS, INCORPORATED, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS CHECKHOOK Application filed September 14, 1928. Serial No. 306,065.
This invention relates in general to hooks for identification checks and the like, and has more particular reference to articles of such nature made in such a way that the hook may be readily positioned within a flanged holder regularly used for labels and the like.
It is a common practice in factories and shops to provide each employee with a quantity of brass checks bearing a number asm signed to him and to place one of such checks in some manner upon any bin from which a tool is issued to him. Various types of hooks have been used for this purpose, most of them more or less expensive or diflicult of attachment.
It is the princi al object of this invention to provide a simp e, inexpensive hook which will serve the purpose and which may be readily positioned within a label holder or removed therefrom at will.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hook of the type describedwhich is inherently sturdy enough to withstand constant rough usage.
2;, A further object of the invention is the provision of a. check hook having a sheet metal body and a hook of wire stock.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description,
which, taken in connection with the accomanying drawings, discloses a preferred emodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l is a perspective of a hook embodying my invention as held in a label holder;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken through the body, showing the method of inserting a hook in the body, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional "detail through the hook and hook body plate, showing the method of assembly.
The hook embodying my invention is composed of two members only, comprising a 45 hook proper and a body plate. The hook itself is composed of a wire stock 11 of suitable size, preferably of soft steel, bent up slightly at one end. Near the other end an annular shoulder 12 is upset on the bod of the stock, leaving a portion of the ho y unaffected. This portion is inserted through a hole in the body 13, and a second shoulder or a riveted head 14 is formed on the end of the wine stock securely fastening the wire into the body.
The body 13 is composed of a piece of sheet metal having any desired shape, preferably rectangular, bent outwardly intermediate its ends a sufficient distance to permit the opposite riveted head 14 on the wire stock to lie between the plate and card holder, a hole 6( for the insertion of the wire stock being provided at the center of the bent portion. The edges of the holding plate are adapted to lie within grooves 15 formed by flanges 16 bent into a holderbody 17, which may bent of any standard type of holder for name plates, etc.
The corners of the rectangular body plate are rounded. To insert the hook into the label holder, the body is placed lengthwise .70 against the holder between the flanged edges and is then simply rotated to bring the short edges of the body into engagement beneath the flanges of the label holder. 7
It is thought that this invention and many of its attendantadvantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that many changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing fro1n the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificin all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment'thereof.
I claim: i
In combination, a. holder having inturned flanges atits sides to provide grooves, a resilient relatively flat hook carrying member in said grooves, said member being of substantially disk-shape having diametrically opposite cut away portions, and having a diameter slightly greater than the Width of the holder between the grooves, whereby said cut away portions provide for the insertion of the member between the flanges, and subsequent rotation of the member engages the edges of the member in the grooves, thereby bowing the member outwardly in the center to provide for frictional engagement between V the member and the holder.
WALTER N. VANCE.
