This invention relates to registering devices and more particularly to that type of registering device known as a hub-odometer.
One object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be so constructed as to prevent passage of grease from the hub to the registering mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide a registering device of this kind with w means whereby an additional dial may be mounted therein, Without rearranging or modifying the registering mechanism as a whole.
A further object of the invention is to pro- ,5 vide a registering device of this kind which will be simple in construction and easy to assemble and install.

In these drawings, I have illustrated one .l AA3,0 embodiment of my invention and have shown the same as applied to a hub-odometer of a Well-known construction, but it Will be understood that this particular embodiment has been chosen for the purpose of illustrah 31' tion only and that the invention may be applied to registering devices of various kinds and may take various forms Without departing from the spirit thereof.
The registering mechanism of the device here shown is mounted in the hub cap 1, which is rigidly secured to the hub of the Wheel, not shown, which is rotably mounted upon a fixed spindle or axle 2 and retained in position thereon by a nut 3. The registerl 415 ing mechanism is mounted in a recess 4 atthe outer end of the hub cap and is held against rotation so that it is always in a position in which the registration can be easily read. The hub cap is provided With an opening 5 through which the registration may be read and this opening is preferably closed by a glass or other transparent closure, as shown at 6. Mounted in the recess 4 is a supporting member or plate 7, having arranged on one side thereof and near the periphery thereof a series of studs 8 on which are mounted the *registering dials 9 and their actuating mechanism. The actuating mechanism preferably consists of a train of gears l() and a ratchet wheel 11 connected with said train of gears. Cooperating with the ratchet Wheel 11 is an operating pawl 12 which causes the act-uating 'mechanism to advance the registering dials or counters according to the distance traveled by the Wheel. As here shown, this paWl is mounted on pin 13 which is slidably mounted in slot 14- in the supporting member 7 and is operated by the rotation of the hub relative to the supporting member to cause the pawl to actuate the registering mechanism. Mounted on the supporting member 7 near the center thereof is a stud 15 on which is mounted a detent pawl 16 which holds the ratchet Wheel against reverse movement. This stud l5 also serves as a support for the face plate 17 which is secured to the stud by means of a screw 18.
The supporting plate 7 is so mounted that it is held against the rotation and the hub cap and its associated devices are permitted to rotate relative thereto. To this end there is shown a disc or plate 19 mounted in the hub cap at the inner end of the recess 4, this plate being preferably provided With a screw threaded iange 2() which is screwed into the opening formin the recess and thus is caused to rotate with the hub cap. This plate is provided With a central bearing 21 in which is journaled a. stud or .trunnion 22 carried by the supporting member 7 and which serves Y bearing plate 23.

The plate 19 is provided With an eccentric boss 3st forming a part of bearing 21 and on this boss is mounted a yoke or eccentric strap having an arm 36 in which the 13 is mounted. ln order to prevent grease and oil from Working their way through the bearing 21 "about the trunnion22 and thus enternw the Vrecess l and coming in Contact With the registering dials, l haveprovided a special packing for the trunnion. As here shown, the rear portion of the-bearing 21 is enlarged and is closed by an annular'nut 37, between which yand therforWard portion of the bearing is formed an annular recess 38 adapted to receive a packing material of suitable character, shown at 39. 'ilrunnion 22 is journaled at its front and rear portions in the bearing 21 and the nut 37, which in effect forms part of the bearing, and the trunnion is provided with a circumferential groove l0 which registers with the annular recess 38 of the bearing. TWhen the packing nut 3? is tightened down it will exert pressure on the paci;- ingmaterial 39 and a portion of this material will be forced into the groove in the t unnion. The pressure on the packing material' will compress that portion thereof lying between the front and rear Walls of the recess but that'portion of the material which is forced into the groove Will not be compressed to so great a degree and vrill Vretain its iiexibility to snch an extent that it Will n'ot become glazed or hardened by its contact With the trunnion, but will be at all times capable of absorbing any'grease vwhich may pass between the nut and the pin trunnion, consequently the bearing is absolutely grease-proof.
The present c'istei'ing device is designed rimarily for me with five registering dials .but it is sometimes desirable to add a sixth oial to increase the capacity of the device. ln order that this may be done, without rearranging or rebmiding the registering n'iechanism as a Whole, l have provided a special supporting bracket which can be readily applied to or removed from the supporting member 7 and on which the additional Vdial may be mounted. rlihis additional dial would necessarily bel arrangedbeyond the left hand dial and would therefore lie in front of the actuating` device r paivl 12, which is arrangedbetween the stud 8 which carries the ratchet Wheel 11 and the stud 8 which carries the'left hand dial As here shown, tl is bracket comprisesthe body portion l1 having an aperture 42 adapted'to embrace the central stud 5. In a registering device comprising a supporting member, a stud arranged near the center of said member, a second stud cariied by said member and spaced from the first mentioned stud and a registering element carried by saidsecond stud, a bracket having an apertured portion engaging said central stud and extending substantially radially therefrom, and having a second apertuied portion oilset from said radial portion and extending at an angle thereto Ato engage said second stud, a stud carried by the radial portion of said bracket, and an additional registering element mounted on the stud which is carried by said bracket.

In a registering device comprising two parts one of which is rotatable with relation to the other, studs carried by one of said parts, a registering element carried by one of said studs, and means controlled by the relative movement of said parts to actuate said registering element, a bracket having means for mounting the saine on two of said studs, and an additional registering element mounted on said bracket in operative relation to the first mentioned registering element.

In a registering device comprising two parts one of which is rotatable with relation to the other, two studs carried by one of said parts and spaced one from the other, a registering element carried by one of said studs, and means controlled by the relative movement of said parts to actuate said registering element, a bracket having an apertured poi'- tioii to engage one of said studs and having a laterally extending apertiired portion to engage the other of said studs, a stud cairied by said bracket, and an additional registering element mounted on the last mentioned stud and having means to operatively connect the same with said actuating means.
6. In a registering device comprising a supporting member, studs carried by said member, and a registering element mounted on one of said studs, separate means for providing said registering device with an additional registering element comprising a bracket having means for mounting the same on two of said studs, and means for mounting said additional registering device on said bracket iii a predetermined position with relation to the first mentioned registering element.
