Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 22, 1921. Serial No. 439,127.
siding in the city of Hartford, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawthe first wheel lng, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to registers of that type in which the several number wheels are mounted side by side upon a common axis and in which the totalizing wheels are as usual locked against reverse motion, while what are commonly called the trip wheels are capable of being set back to zero. The invention is concerned particularly with the devices whereby the first of the totalizing wheels is driven from the actuating shaft and the devices whereby the first of the trip wheels is driven with the first of the totalizing wheels, the object of the invention being to improve the details of construction with a view to simplicity, improvement in operation, and ease in assembling. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated and in which- Figure l is a view of the improved register in elevation, a portion of the casing which includes the driving gear being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a view of longitudinal tion.
Fig- 3 is a view in transverse section, showing particularly the worm drive.
Fig. l is a detail view in longitudinal section, on alarger scale, showing particularly the means for actuating the first trip wheel.
Fig. 5 is a view of the same in transverse section.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the rier shown in Figs. i and 5.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view illustrating the means for driving the first of the the same partly in section and partly in elev pawl cartotalizing wheels.
The several number wheels, both totalizing and trip are'inclosed within a cylindrical casing a provided with a sight-opening a through which the number wheels are visible. The several totalizing number wheels 5, b, 6 and b are mounted on a shaft 0, Z), of the totalizing wheels being fixed on the shaft, while the others are loosely mounted thereon. The several trip wheels d, d are mounted on a resetting shaft 6 which is provided with an operating handle 6 as usual. The several totalizing wheels are actuated, one from another, in the usual manner and the several trip wheels are likewise actuated one fromanother and are reset, all as usual in registers of this charactor and these several transmitting devices and resetting devices neednot be explained herein, since they form no part of cut invention.
The casing a, receives at its right-hand end a sleeve hub f on which is secured a secondary casing 7" which incloses and supports in suitable bearings the driving worm g which engages a worm wheel g on a shaftg The latter is mounted in a suitable hearing within the sleeve hub f and engages, through a simple form of clutch g a shaft in, which is also supported in 'a suitable hearing within the sleeve hub f, and is formed with or receives an eccentric it, in which the end of the shaft 0 is supported loosely. (in the eccentric it, is mounted a gear 2' which meshes with an internal gear formed on the cap f which "forms part of the sleeve hub 7". it also rieshes with an internal gear 22* carried with e ternal gears f and b have an unequal numher of teeth, so that the first number wheel is driven, by these well known difierential' reduction devices, at a slow speed as compared with the shaft 9 The part i of the casing f is cylindrical internally and is fitted purpose of insuring the alinement and the casing f is secured rigidly to the baseplate by screws, one or which is shown at ,2.
As before stated, the shaft 0 is fixed to the first number wheel 2) and rotates therewith and it is therefore employed to actu ate the first trip wheel d. For this purpose it is formed at its left-hand end to engage and rotate a pawl carrier is, which, in the construction shown, receives one or more spring pawls k, the latter engaging an in ternal ratchet wheel 05' formed with the first trip wheel d. in this manner the first trip wheel is rotated at the same speed as the first totalizing wheel, while the first trip wheel is free to be set back to zero.

first totalizing wheel 5. The two inupon the cylindrical hub f for the the pres- I I claim as my invention: In a register, the combination of a casing, totalizing number Wheels and trip number wheels, a common supporting shaft for the totalizing wheels and having the first totalizing wheel fixed thereto, means to actuate the first totalizing wheel, a resetting shaft axially in line with the first mentioned shaft and having the trip wheels mounted rotatably thereon, a pawl carrier engaged by 10 This specification signed this 12th day of 15 January, A.
