|MPROVEMENT IN PACKAGES FOR PAINTS, &c.
Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. 180,66l, dated August 1, 1876; application filed June 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SIDEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Iniproved Package for Paint and other Articles, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section on line-0c w in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. 4
The invention consists in causing the upper edge of can-body to bear in a groove and against center of a strip, and providing a flatheaded screw working in a nut on bottom of can, in order to form a close joint, as hereinafter described.
A is a can, made from sheet metal in the ordinary manner, except that the upper edge is turned or inclined inward, and a stamped nut or socket, B, is soldered to the bottom. The can-cover O is stamped with an inverted V-shaped groove, a, at the outer dge, for the reception of a packing-ring, b. This sets the central portion of the cover down, making a recess for the screw-head. An aperture, 0, is made in the cover, through which the screw D passes. The screw D engages with the socket or nut B, and is provided with a large flat head, underneath which a packing-ring,
d, is placed. The nut B is countersunk at the top to facilitate entering the screw D. The article placed in the can will be hermetically sealed when the cover is secured to its place by means of the screw D.
I have described my improved can as having a cover provided with a groove, which at the same time forms a recess vfor the head of the screw; but, if desired, an ordinary cover may be used, and the screw D, which holds the cover on, may have a conical head, and the cover may be countersunk to receive it, or a wire may be soldered to the bottom of the can, and the cover retained by screwing a nut down upon the cover, the wire being threaded for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- A can having the inclined upper edge of body bearing in the groove a of cover, and against the center of strip 1), and a flat-headed screw working in a nut in the bottom of the can, to form a close joint, as shown and described.
