absorbing chamber with a minimum supply of fuel.
A further object of the invention is the production of a boiler of this construction provided with a central air distributor therein to permit an air draft to the center of the fuel A further object of the invention is the production of a boiler provided with a combustion chamber intermediate the side walls of the water circulating chamber whereby the heat from the fire bed will be directed to said side walls to heat the water at a low level and cause a better circulation of the water in the boiler.
` Still a further object of the invention is the production of a boiler having means acting to dry the fuel, and to deflect the heat in the proper direction and also acting as a gravity feed for the fuel to the re bed.
Still a further object of the invention is the provision of novel means above the fire bed acting as an air outlet for facilitating the combustion of the coal gases.
Other objects and advantages of. the invention will appearfrom the accompanying description, the invention consisting in the novel boiler and parts thereof hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a section taken through the boiler, the upper part thereof being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a. horizontal section ontheline 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1. y
' Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the top portion of two of the upwardly extending fire pot sections.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the supporting ring.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawings:
The base 1 of the boiler forms the ash pit 2, the base being formed with a flanged extension 3 on` which the body 4 of the boiler 1s supported. The body 4 is provided with an inner heat-absorbing wall 5 of chamber 6, shown as a water-circulating chamber. The upper part of the body, shown in elevation 1n F1g. 1, is of any conventional type and forms no part of my invention. A hollow supporting ring 7 is bolted or otherwise secured to the flanged extension 3 and is supplled with pairs of openings 8 equidistantly spaced apart as shown in Fig. 4.
The specific form of lower grate bars or members per se forms no part of the present lnvention but in the specific embodiment of the invention shown there are a plurality of rotatable gratebars or members 9 suitably spaced and formed .with openings therebetween as shown in Fig. 4. The grate bars are lrotatably supported on the shafts 10 which may be journalled in suitable bearings (not shown) in the front and rear walls of the base 1. The central grate bar or member which is designated 11 is not rotatable but is stationary.
I provide a plurality of upwardly and inwardly extending curved units 12 forming the fire pot, each unit being provided with slots 13 therein which are inclined upwardly and outwardly towards the wall 5 of the heatabsorbing chamber 6. Each of these units is provided with a plurality of vertically arranged langes or partition walls 14 extending outwardly to the wall 5 to form a plurality of combustion chambers 15; The walls 14 are provided at intervals with openings 16 extending transversely therethrough whereby communication may be had from one chamber to another.
The terminal flanges 14 of each unit are recessed at the upper edges as shown at 17 so that when the units are assembled together they may be detachably held together by clips 18 entering said recesses to form in effeet a continuous cone-shaped fire pot. At their lower ends the units are provided with horizontal flanges 19 carrying pins 20 entering the openings 8 in the supporting ring 7 which supports the iire box just described. A central air distributor 21 is mounted in the central portion of the fire box, the air distributor comprising a pipe the lower end of which is bolted or otherwise secured to the stationary grate bar 11. Said distributor is provided around its periphery with several series of inclined slots 22. The distributor terminates at its upper end in a hollow head 23 diamond-shaped in cross-section and mounted on said head and communicating therewith is a central air outlet 24 having a series of openings 25 in the upper part thereof. When the fire pot, formed by the units 12, is supplied with fuel 26 the air distributor 21 is normally surrounded by the fuel which extends above the head 23 but the air outlet- 24 extends upwardly above the fuel. lVhen the boiler is in operation the draft comes up through the ashpit past the lower grate bars 9 as in the conventional type of boiler and the flame, coal gases, etc., are directed against the inner wall 5 of the water circulating chamber 6 and heat the water therein. vThese {ia-mes, gases, etc., iirst pass through the openings 13 in the tire pot wall formed by the units 12 and pass through the combustion chambers 15 and upper portionof the boiler to the stack. The smoke and ignited gases can pass freely from one chamber 15 to the other through the openings 16 provided for that purpose thus distributing the. smoke, gases, etc., through the various chambers and causing uniform heating of the same but without destroying the beneicial effects of the separate chambers.
The walls of the iire pot are inclined upwardly and inwardly to provide a larger vo ume in the upper portions of the combustion chambers to accommodate any expansion of the ignited gases which may take place as they rise. The air distributor 21 is provided with slots 22 sothat the central portion of the fuel bed will receive an adequate supply of combustion promoting air. The lower surfaces of the head 23 are inclined upwardly and outwardly to direct the heat towards the wall of the water-circulating chamber 6 while the upper surfaces of said air distributor 23 act to distribute the fresh coal thrown in the furnace down on the re bed by the action of gravity. The head as a. whole acts to dry any fresh fuel which may be fed to the fire bed.
The central air outlet 24 with its series of openings 25 is provided so that fresh oxygen may be fed above the fire bed to cause more nearly complete combustion of the coal gases thereover. The particular inner construction of boiler described with the inner inclined wall 12 of the fire pot and the combustion chambers 15 and the communications therebetween provide an increase in the length of travel for the gases through the furnace which adds to the eiiiciency of the device.
I claim:
1. In a furnace, a lower grate structure, a heat-absorbing wall, an upwardly extending fire pot within the furnace spaced from said heat-absorbing wall and formed with means of communication between the interior of said iire pot and the space between said re pot and wall and radial, vertically arranged flanges extending from said fire pot to said heat-absorbing wall to provide a plurality of separate combustion chambers between said ire pot and said wall.
2. In a furnace, a lower grate structure, a heat-absorbing wall, an inner upwardly extending apertured wall within the furnace adjacent said heat-absorbing wall forming a lire box within said furnace and radial anges extending from said inner wall to said heatabsorbing wall to provide individual combustion chai'nbers between said fire box and said heat-absorbing wall, said iianges being provided with transverse openings therein whereby communication may. be had between said combustion chambers.
3. In a furnace, a lower grate structure, a heat-absorbing wall, an upwardly extending apertured wall forming a fire pot within said furnace spaced from said heat-absorbing wall. a hollow air distributor within said upwardly extending firepot, said distributor being perforated throughout substantially its entire length and a hollow diamond-shaped head on said air distributor extended outward ly therefrom to a position near said apertured wall.
(l. In a furnace, a lower grate structure, a iire pot within said furnace, a hollow air distributor mounted within said fire pot, a hollow enlarged head on said air distributor extending outwardly toward the walls of said fire pot to a point substantially midway between the walls of said air distributor and the walls constituting said lire pot, and a pipe communicating with said head and providing an outlet from said air distributor positioned adjacent the upper portion of said iire pot.
