IMPROVEMENT IN AWNINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,580, dated August 1, 1876; application filed June 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY HEssELS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Awning, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying draw ing, Figures 1 and 2 represent sectional side elevations of my improved awning in different positions; Fig. 3, a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in awnings, by which the same may be readily adjusted at any height, and for any light, in a strong and simple manner; and the invention consists ofa swinging stretching-frame and outer curtain, that is wound up by a-roller and cord. The roller is supported on a second swinging frame, to be lowered and adjusted to any height and position for regulating the height.
In the drawing, A represents a lateral stretching-frame, that is pivoted to brackets B, attached to the outer window-casing. The stretching-frame A may be locked at any point or height by pivot-pawls a of the brackets and ratchets I), applied sidewise to the pivoted end of the lateral frame A. A curtain, B, of canvas, sail-cloth, or other strong fabric, is applied to the lateral frame A, and a top roller, 0, on the end drum d of which the cord D is wound by the weight of the frame when the awning is lowered, while, by pulling and unwinding the cord, the curtain is wound upon the roller, and the stretchingframe raised. The second swinging frame F is locked, by means of a lateral stiffening-brace, e, and hook e on the window-casing, rigidly in vertical position.
When it is desired to adjust the awning for the admission of proper light, as in lithographing, jewelers, and other establishments, the roller-frame F-is lowered, by means of a cord and pulley, F, until supported by stationary projecting arms fot' the pivot-brackets. The stretching-roller may then be adjusted in suitable position below the roller-frame, so that the light is thrown on the work from above.
The roller-frame may be raised and set to any height required by means of the cord, so as to admit the light under the most favorable circumstances at different times of the day.
The pawls and notches serve to lock the stretching-frame without throwing the weight on the roller cord, resisting thereby more re liably the influence of strong winds, 85c.
When the awningis lowered entirely it serves to close the window like a curtain, forming a protection against heavy rain, hail, 850.
The awning is of simple, durable, and strong construction, and equally advantageous for private residences, as for many business purposes.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of brackets B, having pawls a, pivoted frames A F, ratchet b, and top roll 0, as and for the purpose described.
2. A frame, F, having the cross-bar e, and adapted to be locked by hook c, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with frame F, of pulley,
cord, and rigid arms f, as and for the purpose specified.
