The invention consists generally in an improved means for slitting or roughing box or carton blanks or sheets.

In a conventional arrangement for feeding blanks to a box forming machine, such as the Staude machine hereinabove referred to,

-Also disposedrupon bracket 19 in the same manner as feedplate 18 is a knife-holder comprising a body'29, a blade holding section 30, and a bifurcated end 31.; Suitably placed in the body 29 is an aperture 32 by I which the holder is pivotally supported on secured in bracket 19, and about which is a coil spring 33 the force of which is urged upon the under side of bifurcated end 31. Thus the blade holder 29 is adjustably se- 7 cured in position by the head or nut- 34 upon screw 32, which is on the opposite side of end 31, said holder thus also being prevented from having a vibratory motion and is held against displacement from any adjusted position by the spring 33 which urges end 31 to maintain the position controlled by adjustment of nut 34.
In the blade receptacle 30, which is formed with a bottom plate 40 which is secured by screws upon member 29, is a plurality of blades 35. Between adjacent blades 35 are separators 36. \Vithin the part 30 and beneath the blades 35 and separators 36 and above bottom plate 40 is a plate 37 This member is vertically adjustable by means of two or more machine screws 37 a threaded in plate 40 and bearing upon the bottom of plate 37. By adjustment of plate 37, the penetration of the blades 35 into the flap of a carton blank is regulated.
The blades 35 are secured in any adjusted position by screws 38 threaded in one side of holder section 30. A stud 39 is disposed at the other side of said blade holder 30 and freely rotatable thereon is a roller bearing 41, the'topmost portion of the periphery of which is above'the horizontal cutting edge of blades 35. 7 As carton blanks go through the machine, the knives 35 are adapted to slit the flap, bearing 41 engaging a portion of the'pulley 16 to insure accurate depth of slitting and to avoid a too deep penetration of the.

A bracket 42 is mounted upon a bar 43 traversing the machine somewhat above the shaft 11 and is secured thereon by a lock nut 44. A scraper having an angular body and a blade end 45 is mounted on said bracket so that the blade is adapted to scrape from pulley 16 particles of foilor paper which adhere thereto as a result of the destructive slitting of the carton flap.
Thus the foil covered surface of the carton blank is uniformly ruptured and roughened so that asphaltum or any other suitable adhesive may be applied to the flap of the carton blank to cause said flap to adhere to the blank in a proper position in the final assembly of the carton in the box or carton forming machine- Iclaim:
1. A box forming machine comprising blank feeding means, a tray, knives in said tray, and a guideupon said tray cooperating with said feeding means to regulate the penetration of said knives into blanks.
2. A box forming machine comprising blank feeding means, a tray, knives in said tray, and a guide upon said tray cooperating with said feeding means to regulate the penetration of said knives into blanks, and in which said feed means is of a rotary type, and said guide is a bearing engaging said feed means.
3. A box forming machine comprising roller blank feed means, a tray in juxtaposition thereto, knives in said tray, and means for locking said knives in said tray.
4. A box forming machine comprising roller blank feed means, a tray in juxtaposition thereto, knives in said tray, and means for adjusting the cutting edge of said knives relatively to said tray.
5. A box forming machine comprising roller blank feed means, a tray in uxtaposition thereto, knives in said tray, means for raising and lowering the knives in said tray, and means for securing said knives in any adjusted position.
6. A box forming machine comprising roller blank feed means, a tray in juxtaposition thereto, knives in said tray, and a roller bearing upon said tray engaging said feed means.
7. A box forming machine comprising roller blank feed means, a tray in juxtaposition thereto, knives in said tray, a guide bearing upon said tray defining its position with respect to said feed means, and means upon said tray for moving the knives therein toward said feed means independently of said tray guide bearing.
8. A tray for combination with a box folding machine, comprising a section for knives.
knives in said section, means for raising and lowering the knives therein, and a guide for engaging said box folding machine.
9. A box forming machine comprising blank feeding means, a tray, penetrating means in said tray-adapted to engage blanks in said feeding means, and a guide upon said tray cooperating with said feeding means to regulate the penetration of said penetrating means into blanks.
