Description

Filed Sept. 4, 1928 5 s 2 a z 5 i2, 1?
Patented May 12, 1931 UNITED STATES FREDERIC IB. EGGLER, OF GOPPINGEN, GERMANY DENTAL APPARATUS Application filed September 4, 1928. Serial No. 303,929.
This invention relates in general to dental apparatus and more particularly to dental apparatus of the kind described in the U. S. Patent 1,068,870 in which a replaceable or exchangeable member is shown that is adapted to hold wadding or cotton wool in the patients mouth and also operates to hold the cheeks and lips away from the teeth.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a cross section on the line I-I of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the apparatus partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the appara tus.
Fig. 1 is a similar view to Fig. 3 another insertion being mounted in the apparatus.
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of construction of the holding device for the insertion.
The support of the wadding holder 16 consists, as in the known apparatus, of a guide rod 1 equipped with a slide member 2. Attached to the upper end of the rod 1 is a socket 3 into the hollow 4. of which the extensions 17 of different members or Wadding holders 16 can be inserted and locked in position by a locking bar 5 which passes through a hole in the extension 17. The locking bar 5 is fixed by a thread in the slide member or cast into the same so as to avoid a soldered joint, such joints becoming discolored soon after the apparatus is taken into use. This diseoloring takes place even if the apparatus is well nickelled and gives the apparatus an unpleasant appearance. The guide rod 1 is fixed in the bottom of the socket 3 by a screw thread 7, or by being cast into said 49 bottom.
Another distinguishing feature with respect to the known apparatus consists in the fact that the slide member 2 has a threaded extension 8 passing through a slot 10 in the chin rest 11 and fitted with a thumb screw 12 to enable the chin rest 11 to be adjusted and fixed in its adjusted position.
As indicated by the dash and dot lines in Fig. 1 the slot 10 in the chin rest 11 enables 50 the latter to be shifted or adjusted transversely to the guide rod 1 when the thumb screw 12 is loosened, so that the chin rest can be adjusted to accommodate the various sizes of chins of the patients. A flaring tongueshaped extension 9 may also be provided to enable the chin rest 11 to be turned in the one or other direction around the guide rod 1, as indicated by the straight dash and dot lines in Fig. 1. By this means the chin rest can be placed beneath the right or left jaw w of the patient so that the pressure on the jaw will be exerted in a vertical direction, which was not always possible in the known apparatus, so that a skewing of the wadding holder often occurred. At the bottom end of the as guide rod 1 is a pressure plate 13 against which a pressure spring 14 bears that urges the chin rest towards the socket 3, whereby the wedding holder 16 together with the tongue holder and cheek protector are fixed relatively to the teeth or the part of the patients mouth to be operated upon.
As the pressure of the spring 14 varies with the height of the patients jaw and therefore a comparatively strong pressure may arise 76 which is too much for sensitive patients, the slide member 2 is provided with a fixing device consisting of a screw 15 by which the chin rest 11 can be fixed at a certain height so as to prevent the spring 14 from exerting a pain- 80 ful pressure on the patients aw.
Instead of fixing the locking bar 5 on the slide member 2 a holding stud 5a may be fixed on a flap 18 which by hinge 19 is oscillatably connected with a socket 3 for the extension to 35 be inserted (Fig. 5).
This stud 5a engages similar to rod 5 with the bores of the socket 3 and of the insertions 16a and locks the same in position.
Fig. l shows an extensional insertion 16a specially designed for the treatment of the front teeth and creating a large operation field, as the arms 22 connecting the element 20 for retaining the lips with the holder 21 for retaining the tongue are curved outward 1 as much as possible.
I claim 2- In dental apparatus, the combination of a guide rod, a socket attached to the end of said guide rod, an insertion piece adapted to be 10( TNT introduced'into said socket, a slide member adapted to slide on: said rod, av flap, a hinge oscillatably fixing said flap 011 said socket, and a stud on said flap for holding said insertion piece. W I ,7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FREDERIC B. EGGLER.
