BARBER CHAIR Filed Dec. 23. 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A f /6 m $2,): 4. J E H 5 Inventor fiof w Attorney Patented May 12, 1931 FREDERICK E. R'OTHE, OF VJENTZVILLE, MISSOURI This invention relates to barber chairs, and an object of the invention is to provide a barber chair with plural back cushions, both of which are adapted to fold within the back frame while the barber operates upon full grown persons, and to further provide for eX- tending one of the backs for use as a seat while the barber is serving a child or other small person.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a barber chair of the character referred to that is strong, compact and durable, thoroughly reliable for its intended purpose, presenting a very pleasing appearance, very simple in its method of assembly, and simple to operate, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes in the variations, and modifications, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claim herein appended.
In the drawings :wherein like reference characters throughout the several views Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a barber chair formed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation-thereof showing the outer back extended,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the back of the chair, with the outer cushion extended and the outer cushion being in top plan with a portion thereof broken away, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical section in detail through the back frame illustrating the outer and inner cushion in folded relation.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the

anchored in a suitable ed within the wall of the frame, so as to be retractile therein, on a plurality of spaced coil springs 16 and the length of the coil springs when not under tension, are such as to force the rear cushion 14 to the position shown in The outer ends of the coil springs 16 are manner to the inner face of the inner cushion 1 1, while the inner ends of the coil spring 16 are anchored to the rear wall 10 of the casing.

with the channel.
double-faced outer formed of a subtantially rectangular frame 17, formed with inwardly projecting lugs 18 that are pivoted to the lower portions of the side Walls 11, 12 on pins 19. A solid bridge wall or partition wall 20 is secured between the edges of the frame 17 and forms a division between the outer face 21 and the inner face 22 of the face 15.
On the inner adjacent ends of the arms 25, 26 are a pair of projecting lugs 27, 28 that extend through the relatively narrow slot 2% of the bars. A pair of links 29, 3 of angular configuration, are pivoted at their vertices as at 31, 32 to the rear portion of the partition 20 on the inner face thereof.
On the free end of adjacent legs of each link 29, 30, are formed elongated slots 33 that movably couple the links to the projecting pins 27, 28 that are seated therein. On the free ends of the other legs of each link 29, 30 are formed outstanding lugs 34.
A similar pair of lugs 35 are formed on the face of the partition wall 20 adjacent the forward margin thereof. The opposite ends of a pair of helical coil springs 36, 37 are supported by and between the lugs 3 1 on tlhe links and the lugs 35 on the partition wal The springs 36, 37 normally urge the arms 25, 26 outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and when the arms 25, 26 are retracted within the channel bar 23, the links 29, 30 will compress the springs.
To fold the outer cushion 15 from the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the arms 25, 26 are pushed inwardly by the hand of the operator until their edges permit the frame 17 to be folded within the back frame 9, whereupon the outer double-faced cushion 15 will act as a back rest for a nor mal sized person.
When the outer cushion 15 is extended to rest upon the arm 7 of the chair, the arms 25, 26 will be urged outwardly by action of springs 37, 36 to rest upon the arms 7. The inner cushion 14 will then expand to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to serve as a back rest for a child, while the outer cushion 15 will form the seat.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail, herein any particular form, structure or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the claim, or the claims of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A back for barber chairs comprising a back frame including an open front, a back wall, and side walls extending from the back Wall, an inner cushion disposed within the frame and retractile with respect thereto, an outer cushion pivotally connected to the back FREDERICK E. ROTI-IE.
