My invention relates to pneumatic feed mechanisms for feeding papers or paper sections or like articles from one end of a stack or pile.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved construction of pneumatic feed mechanism of the class specified; to'secure rapidity and efliciency in operation; to secure simplicity of structure; and to provide a 3? mechanism particularly well adapted to feed parts or sections of a newspaper.

Referring to the drawings, the feed mechanism shown comprises means such as the uprights 1, 2 and 3 for holding a stack or plle of articles to be fed, such as newspaper sections AA. A supporting member 4: is shown for supporting papers or other'articles, but this support does-not extend entirely underneath the bottom paper, but only for the right hand portion of Ithesame, as shown in F ig's. 4 and5, leaving space underneath the left hand portions of said paper,
" through which the folded edges of the papers or paper sections may pass.
These folded edges of the papers are sup portedand released by. two sets of support-' ing fingers 5-5 and 66. The fingers 55 have hooked or bent ends 7 adapted to slide underneath the papers A and said fingers are mounted on blocks 8 carried by a rock shaft 9 which has a crank arm 10 pivotally connected with a link 11 which latter is carried by a forked sliding member 12 actuated by a cam 13' on a rotary shaft 14, so that the rotation of shaft 14 causes cam 13 to act against roller 15 and so cause link 11 to swing 3 rock shaft 10 and rock shaft 9 so asto swing fingers 5 back and forth underneath the folded edges of papersections A.
The other fingers 6 are carried by blocks 17 on the rotary shaft 18 andshaft 18 is rocked by a crank arm 19 connected with a sliding member 20' having a forked end 21 straddling rotary shaft 22 carrying cam 23,
said member 20 also having a roller 24 actuated by-cam23, so that member 20 will'be reciprocated by rotation of shaft 22 and will cause swinging movement of fingers 6.
The operating mechanisms for these two sets of the swingingfingers '55' and 66 are arranged so that the pile will be normally supported by fingers 77 as shown in Fig. 5, but these fingers will be swung away to release the lowermost paper section, and as soon] as this section is released the fingers 66 will be swung up to engage the edge of the next lowermost-paper, and then the fingers 5+5 will be swungback to make full engagement with said second'paper' Which becomes the lowermost paper and so supports the same and the pile.
Pneumatic feed devices or suckers 26-26 are mounted on a rotary tubular member or pipe 27 located below the stack or pile of papers A between the ends offingers 7 and the end support 4. These suckers 26 are adapted toengage the lowermost paper section A when it is released by fingers 7 and pull the same down as shown in Fig.5. Pipe 27 is carriedby bearing 28 mounted on a sliding carriage 29, said carriage 29 being mounted to slide on guideways 30. Carriage 29 is reciprocated byswinging member 31 mounted on a rock shaft 32 and having a forked end which embraces a'nut33. Shaft cause rotation of pipe 27 as the carriage is reciprocated and thus suckers 26 will swing downwardly and be moved bodily backwardly so as to effect such downward swinging and backward movement on the part of the bottom-paper section acted on by the suckers 26, asshown in Fig.5. 7

Thisconsists of a flat block 45 to which is extended a pipe 46 leading from the end of pipe 27 carrying the sucker devices 26. Another pipe 47 leads from block 45 to a pressure reducing apparatus by'which an. exhaust condition is produced for the :suckers- 26.- The block 45 is provided with two channels 48 and 49,- which nearly meet each-other but do. not quite meet, their ends being separated by a' solid portion 50 (Fig. 7 A rotary plate 51 is'mounted in front of the block 45 and provided with a recess 52 adaptedtoalford communication between the-end portions of the channels 48'and49. .The plate 51 is mounted for rotary movement and is rockedby a linkarm 53 connected at 54 with arocker arm; 55, pivoially mounted at its lowe'rend56. Rocker arm 55is actuated by a cam 57 on camshaft 14, said cam 57 cooperatingwithga roller- 58 carried by arm 55' Thus cam-57 will cause'arm 55 to actuate link 53 and the latter in turn will actuate rotary plate 51 and so establish and disest'ablishexhaust connection between exhaust pipe 47 and sucker supply pipe 46 which latter contains a slidable pipe 60 jrunningto tubular member 61 containing one end of sucker carryingpipe27, it beingthus seen that sucker pipe 27: carrying suckers 26'may thus be moved transversely bythe movement of carriage 29 andalso may be turned in tubular member 61 and-bearings 6262, so-as to per mit downward and backward movement of the paper section by thesucker-s, and during such bodily backward and forward movetion to engage bottom paper section A, as
shown inFig. 4', and such suction or exhaust isscutolf from suckers 26 after the bottom paper sectionis drawn down, butbefore it reaches the position} shown in Fig, '5;

Shaft 66 carrying segment 65 also carries gear 73 meshing with pinion 74 on shaft 68a carrying roll 68 and said gear 73 also meshes with gear 75 carried by shaft 70a carrying roll 70, whereby segment shaft 66 drives rolls 68 and 70. Roll shafts 71a and 7 2a carrying rolls 71 and 72 respectively, are provided with pinions 76 and- 77, the former of which meshes with gear 73 on segment shaft 66 and the latter of which meshes with pinion 76, whereby segment shaft 66 drives rolls 71 and 72 also.
Roll 68 is preferably mounted for elastic or yielding. adjustment to permit paper sections of different thickness to'pass between it and segment 65, such adjustment consisting in mounting shaft 68a .in a slideway 80 subject to pressure of a spring 81 tending to force roll 68 toward segment 65 but yielding asrequired by thickness of paper section. B01170 is also yieldingly mounted as by mounting shaft 7 0a in a slidable bearing 82 controlled by a spring 83carried by swinging frame 84 pivoted at 85 and having an arm 86 controlled by a spring 87 so that shaft 7 0a and with it roll 70 may have ample adjustment for accommodating various thicknesses of paper. Also roll'71is adjustable with ref erence to roll 72, as by mounting roll shaft 71a in a slidable bearing controlled by spring 89 permitting sliding up and down movement of roll 71.
For guiding paper from roll 68 to roll 70,
and from roll 70 toexit rolls 71 and 72, a
swinging guide member 90 is provided having guide flanges or members 91 and 92, the former to guide papers from roll 68 to roll 70 and the latter to guide them from roll 70 to exit rolls 71 and 72. This member 90 is pivotally mounted on rock shaft 85, which latter is provided with a handle 94, Fig. 1, by which member 90 may be swung down to get it out of the way in case papers become jammed between segment 65 and rolls 68 and 70, and then fed outwardly to another part of'the'm'achinmor to a set stack or pile of exit'rolls 71 and 72. p
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departni from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with means for supporting a stack or porting means including movable devices, movable to support and release one edge of said articles, pneumatic means for drawing down the released edge of the lowermost article, means for operating said pneumatic means, said pneumatic means being mounted for bodily and for rotative movement during such bodily movement, a segmental roll for acting onthe released edge of said lowermost article to swing the same further downwardly and backwardly and a feed roll cooperating with the said segmental roll to engage the downwardly and baclrwardly swung edge of said article and feed the same.
2. The combination with means for holding and supporting a stack or pile, including swinging fingers for insertion below one edge of the articles in the stack or pile, pneumatic feeding mechanism comprising sucker clevices mounted for bodily movement underneath the stack or pile and also for rotative movement dluring such bodily movement, rotating segmental roll arranged to act upon the edge of a released article and swing the same downwardly and backwardly, and a feed roll cooperatingwith said rotary segment. i V
3. The combination with means for supporting one side of a stack or pile of articles of fingers for supporting the other side'oi said articles and releasing the lowermost article, a sliding carriage carrying a rotary tubular member provided with depending suckers adapted to engage and draw down the lowermost article when released, means by which said tubular member is rotated when the sliding'carriage is reciprocated, a rotary segment arranged and adapted to act upon the released edge of said lowermost article, and a roll cooperating with said rotary segment. I
4. The combination with means for supporting one side of a stack of articles, two sets of fingers for supporting the other side of the same and releasing the lowermost arti-' cle, a slidin carriage carrying a rotatable tubular mem er provided with suckers which are adapted to engage and draw down the re leased edge of said lowermost article, a feed cooperating with said rotary segment, a; pipe leading to said tubular sucker carrying memher and means for controlling said pipe.

13. Means for reciprocating a travelling carriage carryinga rotatable tubular member provided withsuckers, said means comprising a pivoted member having a sliding connection with said carriage and mounted on a rock shaft and a rack and pinion arrangement for rocking said shaft.
14. The combination of a reciprocating carriage carrying a rotatable tubular member provided with suckers, rack and pinion mechanism for turning said tubular member when the carriage is reciprocated, means for reciprocating the carriage, and a pipe connection to said tubular member, said pipe connection having a slidable section'to permit reciprocation of said tubular member with the carriage.
15. The combination of a reciprocating carriage carrying a rotatable tubular member provided with suckers, rack andpinion mechanism for turning said tubular member when the carriage is reciprocated, means for'recipjrocating the carriage, a pipe connection to said tubular member, said pipe connection.

The combination of a reciprocatingcarriage carrying a rotatable tubular member provided with suckers, rack and pinion mech anism for turning said tubular member when the carriage is reciprocated, means for reciprocating the carriage, a pipe connection to said tubular member, said pipeconnection having a slidable section to permit reciprocation of said tubular member with the carriage, a valve in saidpipe connection and means for actuating said valve to establish and disestablish an exhaust condition in said suckers, said valve actuating mechanism comprising a swinging arm link connected with said valve and aca-m for actuating said swinging arm. The combination withthe slidable carriage carrying a rotatable tubular member provided with suckers, of a pipe extending to said tubular member and a valve arrangement for controlling exhaust in said pipe, said valve arrangement comprising a valve block having channels whose ends approach but do not meet and a rotary valve having a recess adapted to connect and disconnect said channels.

The combination with the slidable carriage carrying a rotatable tubular member provided with suckers, of a pipe extending to said tubular member and a valve arrangement for controlling exhaust in said pipe, said valve arrangement comprising, a valve block having channels whose ends approach but do not meet and a rotary valve having a recess adapted to connect and disconnect said channels, and means for actuating said' valve comprising a rocker arm linkconnected with the valve and a camfor actuating the rocker arm.

The combination with means for supporting one side of a stack of articles, fingers for. supporting the other side and releasing the lowermost article, a reciprocating carriage arranged below the stackand carrying arotatable tubular member provided with suckers, means for reciprocating the carriage, a rack and pinion arrangement for rotating the tubular member when the carriage is reciprocated, a rotary segment arranged to cooperate with the suckers, a pair of feed rolls arranged to cooperate with the rotary segment, and a pair of exit rolls arrapged'to cooperate with said first mentioned r0 ls.

The combination with m'eans'for supporting one side of a stack of articles, fingersfor supporting the other side and releasing the lowermost article, a reciprocating carriage arranged below the stack and carrying a' rotatable tubular member provided with suckers, means for reciprocating the carriage, a rack and pinion arrangement for rotating the tubular member when the carriage is reciprocated, a rotary segment arranged to cooperate with the suckers, a pair of feed rolls arranged to cooperate with the rotary segment, a pair of exit rolls arranged to cooperate with said first mentioned rolls, and a guide member for guiding the article from one of the first mentioned rolls to the other and from said rolls to the exit rolls.
23. Means for reciprocating a traveling carriage carrying sucker devices, said means comprising a pivoted member having a sliding connection with said carriage and having a gear operable by a rack.

The combination with a reciprocating carriage, carrying sucker devices, of a slidable pneumatic connection for said sucker devices, said pneumatic connection being adapted to permit the reciprocation of said carriage, valve mechanism for controlling said pneumatic connection, and means for actuating said valve mechanism in accordance with the reciprocation of said carriage, said actuating mechanism comprising a pivotally mounted arm, a cam for actuating the same and a link connection between said pivotally mounted arm and the valve mechanism, said arm being adapted for adjustable gage the article preliminarily separated by ,p the suckers, a gripping roll cooperating with connection with said link.

The combination with a reciprocating carriage carrying a rotary tubular member provided with depending sucker devices, a slidable pneumatic connection for said tubular member, said pneumatic connection being adapted to permit the reciprocation of the carriage and also adapted to permit the rotation of said member.

The combination with a reciprocating carriage carrying a rotary tubular member provided with sucker devices, a pneumatic connection for said tubular member, said pneumatic connection having a slidable section to permit reciprocation of the carriage and also having a rotatable connection to permit rotation of the rotary member.

In a device of the class specified, the combination with pneumatic devices for engaging and separating an endmost article in. the stack, said pneumatic devices being mounted for bodily movement and also for rotative movement during such bodily movement, a device for acting on the released edge of such lowermost article to further separate the same, and a gripping roll cooperating with said device.

In a machine of the class specified,-the combination of pneumatic suckers for engaging and acting upon an endmost article, slidable means for bodily moving sald suckers relatively to said article and also for swinging them in their bodily movement, a rotary segment adapted toengage the released edge of such endmost article, and a gripping roll arranged to cooperate with said segment.

In a machine oft-he class specified, the combination ofpneumatic suckers for engaging and acting upon theendmost :article, means for bodilymoving said suckers relatively to said article and also for swinging I them in their bodily movement, a rotary seg- 75 ment adapted to engage the released edgeof such endmost article, a gripping roll arranged to cooperate with said segment, and a feed roll arranged to receive said article between itself and said segment.

In a machine of the class specified, the combination of pneumatic suckers for engaging and acting upon the endmost article, means for bodily moving said suckers relatively to. said article and also for swinging them in their bodily movement, a rotary segment adapted to engage the released edge of such endmost article, a gripping roll arranged to cooperate with said segment, afeed roll arranged to receive said article between itself and said segment, and discharge rolls arranged to receive said article from said segment and feed roll.
31.-The combination of a reciprocating carriage carrying arotatable tubular mem: ber provided with sucker devices, means for rotating saidmember as the carriage reciprocates, a rotary segment arranged to ensaid segment, and a feed roll to receive the article between'itself and said segment.

The combination of a reciprocating carriage carrying a rotatable tubular mem- I ber provided with sucker devices, means for rotating said member'as the carriage reciprocates, a rotary segment arranged to engage the article preliminarily separated by the suckers, a gripping roll cooperating with said segment, a feedroll to receive the article between itself and said segment, and discharge rolls to receive the article from said feed roll and segment.
33. The combination with the article engaging and advancing means of a guideway mounted for bodily movement out of the way so as to permit the removal of an article in case of ajam.
