Description

' J. MANNING WOODWORII/(ING BENCH PLANE May 12, 1931.
Filed Feb. 5, 1950 [N VV'ENTOR Patented May 12, 1931 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MANNING, or .BAINE HARBO NEWFQUNDLAND woonWonKINe :BENc -I PLANE Applicationfiled February 5, 1930, Serial o. 426,124, and in Canada February 17,1929.
My present invention relates to improvements in a wood working bench plane and ap pertains particularly to a lubricatingdevice therefor adapted to grease the sole of the plane as and Whenever found desirable.
An object of the invention is to provide a plane having a lubricating device associated therewith, preferably incorporated in the front grip or hand rest, adapted to functlon .10 while the plane is in useand capable of adjustment without interfering with the continuous operation of the tool.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grease cup lubricator for planes shaped and positioned as the front hand-grip so that wood.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a combined grease cup and front hand grip for a plane that is characterized by a neat appearance, simple struc- Z5 ture, few parts, durability and low cost of production, being thereby rendered commercially desirable.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as will become apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinaftermore fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described, when reference is bad to the drawings forming a part of this disclosure, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings a Figure 1 is a perspective of a plane embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through this plane; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail section through the combined grease cup and front hand rest.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the plane 5 with a bore 6 through the forward part thereof inidway'between the sides. Into this screws the stem 7 of the body mounting 8 that has a large annular ba'se 9 lying flat on the upper side of the plane body, said base being provided with anupstanding perip he-f rial flange 10 and a large vertical, exteriorly threaded grease cup socket 11 from the bottom of which a central bore 12' throughthe stem 7 serves as a feed outlet. 4 x
The grease cup cap 13is interiorly threadedj'to engage the grease cup socket 11 and is rounded or globular in contour to appear as the ordinary front hand rest, the lower edge 14 flares to a size substantially equal to the, interior dimension of the peripherial flange 10 in which it is adapted to seat while an encircling knurled band 15 circumferentially decorating the .cap 13 completes the structure of the device affording the user a sure grip on. the hand rest and a roughened surface for screwing the cap 13. This grease cup hand rest being flared at the base and nesting snugly into the upstanding flange of the body mounting maintains a neat appearance and the flange prevents the spilling of lubricant over the front of the plane body where it wouldpick up or collect dust, shavings and rubbis When planing, pitchy or gummy wood, a, workman'often finds the labor heavy due to the sole of the plane sticking to or gripping on the wood, on such occasions when my improved plane is used, it is simply necessary to screw down the cap of the grease cup forcing, lubricant through to the sole of the plane whereupon the same is found to move over the surface of the wood with greater smoothness and less effort thereby saving labor and speeding up production. To replenish the grease, cup the cap is unscrewed and refilled in the usual way and again applied to the threaded grease cup socket in the usual way. e
As the construction, use and modus operandi of the device has thus been set forth in detail, it should suffice in conclusion to point out that from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a wood working bench plane is provided that will fulfil all the 1 necessary requirements of such a device, but
as many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention may be constructed within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained inthe said accompanying specification and drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a plane having a threaded bore in the forward part thereof, a
body mounting having an 'exteriorly thread ed stem adapted to seat in said threaded bore, an enlarged plate with an upstanding per- Y ipherial flange and a large vertical grease cup socket exteriorly threaded, a central perforation extending through said stem from said grease cups'oeket and a globular knurled cap for said grease 'cup socket, interiorly threaded for engagement therewith and exteriorly flared at the bottom to seat snugly with the peripherial flange of said body mounting.
In testimony. whereof I hereuntorafiix my signature. 7 JOHN MANNING. i [L. 8.]
