This invention relates to soundcollecting and transmitting means, and in the embodiment shown as illustrative of the invention it is particularly adapted for use with dictation machines. This application is a division of my co-pending application Serial No. 716,626, filed May 29, 1924 which issued as Patent Number 1,630,367 on May 31, 1927.
The drawing is a side elevation, partly in section, of the embodiment of the invention herein claimed.
As in the usual form of device now used on dictating machines to collect and transmit sound from the dictator to the record.- ing mechanism, the speaking-tube 10 is connected in any suitable manner to a handle 11, having a hook-shape guard 13 which engages a part of the dictators hand, while the handle 11 is being held, and which assists the dictator in holding the handie. ln sound-collectors, heretofore provided for use in dictating machines, the mouthpiece was connected to the handle portion by a tubewhich was bent so that, when the handle was held substantially vertically in front of the dictator, the mouthpiece wouid extend at an angle from the handle in the direction of the dictators mouth. When held in this position, the control button 12 was directly in front of the dictator, while the guard 13 was at the opposite side of the handle, a position which it was necessary to maintain due to the location of the mouthpiece with relation to the handle.
It is, however, desirable that the mouthpiece be adjustable so that the position of the receiving portion 01' lip thereof may be adjusted relatively to the hand-held parts on the sound-conveyor or handle 11. And, it is also desirable that the lip of the mouthpiece be adjustable angularly with relation to the axis of the handle so that its incllnatien may be varied to suit the convenience of the user.
Both of these adjustments are provided Serial No. 150,578.
for by the present invention. lvloreover, two separate adjustments are provided for, one for angular adjustment of the mouthpiece about the axis of the handle 11, and the other for angular adjustment of the mouthpiece with respect of the axis oi the handle 11, that is to say, arcuately up-anddown with respect to the button 12 and guard 13.
Since two adjustable movements are provided in directions at right angles to each other, a universal connection is obtained, and it is possible to place the mouthpiece in any position desired with respect to the handle 11 and its parts.
For the purpose of permitting the mouthpiece to be adjusted rotatably around the axis of the handle 11, the mouthpiece 15 is I supported by a tube 30 adapted to slidingly fit or telescope over the end 18 of the handle 11 so as to be rotatabletherearound. The tube 30 is provided with a hollow bead 31 adapted to receive the round-head of: the screw threaded in the end 18 of the handle. The screw 82 acts as a key to hold the end 18 and the tube 30 together. In assembling this device, the'screw 32 is passed through an opening 33 in the hollow bead 31 and is fastened in place in the end 18.
The clearance between the head of the screw 32 and the walls of the groove 31 is sufficient to allow free rotation of the tube while the screw-head prevents the tube 30 from being drawn oi? the end 18.
For the purpose of allowing the mouthpiece 15 to be adjusted a-ngularly with relation to the axis of the handle 11, a tube 3 1 which carries the mouthpiece proper 15a, is pivotally mounted on a rod 35 carried by the tube'30 at right angles to the axis oi the handle 11. The tube 3 1 has arcuate portions 36 adapted to extend inside of and contact with a curved apron 37 carried by the tube 30, so that in all positions of the tube 8 1, the sound-passage will be maintained closed by the arcuate portion 36 and the apron 37.
It will thus be seen that when it is desired to adjust the mouthpiece 15 rotatably about the axis of the handle 11, the tube 30 the mouthpiece 15 is swung on the rod 35. \Vith the provision of these two adjustments, it ispossible to position the mouthpiece proper 15a in any desired position with respect of the handle 11 and the hand engaging parts 12 and 13 thereon.
In order that the mouthpiece 15a may be easily removed when desired, it is provided with a spring-clip connection to the tube 34 of the mouthpiece 15. This tube 34 at its upper end is provided with an integral socket l0 to which is secured a plurality of resilient tongues 39 integrally connected together. These tongues 39 are curved upwardly and inwardly so that they will embrace a bead 38 carried by the mouthpiece proper 15a and yieldingly hold the mouthpiece proper 15a in position in the socket e0. Whenit is'desired to remove the mouthpiece, it is merely pulled past the spring tongues 39 and in the same manner it is forced into place by pressing the bead 38 of the mouthpiece 150; within the spring tongues 39.
' Of course, if desired, the mouthpiece proper 15a may be formed as an integral part of the tube 34 and need not be removably mounted therein.
, Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to obtain Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, a sound-collector comprising a hand-held part; amouthpiecc; means for supporting the mouthpiece; pivotal means between the hand-held part and the last-named means, to allow adjustment of the mouthpiece with relation to the handheld part; and means whereby the mouthpiece and its supporting means may be rotated about the axis of the hand-held part to adjust the former with relation to the latter.
2. In combination, a sound-collector comprising a tubular hand-held part; mouthpiece; a tubular member carrying said mouthpiece, said tubular member slidably fitting over one end of said hand-held part and having a hollow annular head on its end which fits over the hand-held part; and means removably mounted on said hand held part and adapted in operative position part by being slid therefrom.
