N is a ratchet-bar hung on the arm l), und Ehe end passes through a st-aple, M, whieh aots like a pawl, the ntches 0f the rachet-bar N catohing on one end of the staple M.
A modifieation of cbis device is shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings, in whioh R represents a pawl pivoted to oho arm D, the point of whioh' engages with one o1 other of the teeth 0f a ratchet-plate, S, secured to the chair-seat. J.his device I have found 130 operato very weil bul; I prefer to use tl1'e hanging ratcheb-bar N und staple M.
Fig, 1 shows the foot-board F folded up under the seat', where it is secured by a spring, 1:. The spring has a pin or sorew at p, which asses through the side of the fran1e of the seaiv, and catches in the foot-board F. Only the head of this pin p is shown in the drawings. Fig. 2 represents this foot-board extended. The foot-board is construeted of two parts or sections, G 311d F, connected together by hinges, and when drawn 01111 and extended, is kept in phwe by a brace, H, hinged on the seetion G by a pin 7, and when the foot-board is extended, the end of the brace is placed agninst: the rang ot' the ohair ab W. There is a groove in the edge of F, Whioh slid es on a way or cleat; 011 the inside of the frame of the ehair seat, and when this foot-board is folded back it is kept in its 1)]?L06 by the spring P and pin p, as before described.
When a person is seated in the chair, if he inclines bis body forward, it releases the ratohecs N, and then he can, by a simple movemont either baokward or forward, pince' ehe back of tlxe chair either in a reolining poSi tion 01 a more uprightone, anti the ratchets Will hold it securely in the desired position, and itcan be thus adjusted by the oooupant of the chair.
