35 pressible,
Patented May 5, 1931 WILLIAM MACDONALD, or Denn son, oHIo COMBTNED PRINTING- AND COLOR-AFPLYING ELEMENT AND AGTURING THE SAME Application filed. April 17,
This invention relates to a combined printing and color applying element, as well as the method of manufacturing the same, and the invent-ion'has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a printing form, plate or cylinder having interposed therein and as a part thereof, a color applying means for automatically applying color, when desired to the work during the operation of printing the latter from the form,
plate or cylinder.
' As is wellknown in the art of printing, especially in newspaper work, a cylindrical printing form or plate is cast with its impressing portions derived froman asbestos form which Surrounds and is capable of snapping away from theform or, plate after the casting has been completed. One of the objects of the invention is to removably combine with the form or plate, one or more solid dummies, each corresponding inarea to and providing openings when removed from the casting for the reception of a color applying means to form a part of the combinedprint- 5 ing and color applying element.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a new and novel form of color applying means for insertion into the body of and be bodily carried by a printing plate, form or cylinder.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,
a new and novel form of color applying means including a spring controlled, de-,
normally seated discharge means capable of being shifted to open position for the application of color to the work during the operation of the bed cylinder and the printing form of the press or machineon the passage of the work between the bed cylinder and the printing form.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,
a'color applying means for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thorough- 1y eflicient in its use, readily installed with respect to a printing cylinder, form or plate and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in characters Mn'rnon or MANU? 1929. Serial No. 355,821.-
view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompany ingdrawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be under? stood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scopeof the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference denote. corresponding parts throughout theseveral views Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in section of a printing roll'or plate of cylindrical form provided with anopening closed by aremovable dummy or block. 7
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section ofa combined printingand color applying element in accordance with thisinvention. I 1
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View in top plan of a combined printing and color applying element in accordance with this invention.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view partly in section and elevation illustrating a combined printing and color applyingelement in accordance'with this invention arrangedin position with respect to a bed roll between which and the element the work is adapted to pass. The printing plate, form or cylinder 1 is cast from'lead in a known manner, and during the casting operation one or more me.- tallic blocks 2, termed dummies are secured to and surrounded by the body of the cast.- ing. The dummy 2 is of the desired length and is of slightlyless thicknessthanthat of the body of the casting, so that the lead will extend around the edges of the dummy and not weaken the casting. The ends of the dummy 2 are oppositely'bevele'd. Theonterand inner faces of the dummy 2 conform in contour to the outer and inner faces of the casting which provides the printing plate, form or cylinder 1. When the dummy ordummics 2 is or are removed, the printing plate, form or cylinder 1 is provided with one or more openings 3 of an area to snugly receive a' spring controlled color applying device-0r means'which, when in position is bodilycar- 100 the color, and'each outlet is controlled by a normally seated, spring controlled valvular means therefor, and with said means ex- 7 tended from the color applying device'to be engagedand pressed inwardly. by the bed roller 4 of the press, during the operation of the form 1 and roller 4 and when the work,
not shown is travelling between the form 1 and roller 4 to be compressed from form 1.
The opening 3 provided by dummy 2 when the latter is removed conforms in contour to the color applying device referred to generally at 5. The oppositely disposed beveled ends of the dummy 2 are indicated at 2. The color applying device conforms in contour to that of the dummy 2 and comprises a receptacleincluding a body portion open at its rear. The body portion consists of an outer wall 6, a pair of side walls 7 8, a pair of end walls 9, 10. A closure plate 11 is employed for closing the rear of the body portion, and a sealing strip or gasket 12 is interposed between the plate 11 and the rear edgesof the side and end walls. The outer Wall 6 of the receptacle is integral with the side and end walls.
'When the device 5 is mounted in opening 3 the outer wall or front of the receptacle is slightly inset with respect to the outer face ofform l. The receptacle in connection with the closure plate 11 provides a reservoir adapted to contain a body-of a liquid coloring medium 13.
The color applying device 5 is illustrated as being provided with a series of valve controlled discharge means for the color medium l3,'but it is to be understood that the number thereof can be decreased or diminished. Each of the valve controlled discharge-means consists of a sleeve 14 having a reduced, peripherally threaded outer portion 15 and with the outer end of said portion 15 inset as at 16 to provide a stop for a globular valve17 which is arranged within the sleeve 14. The forming of the sleeve 14 with the reduced outer portion 15 provides-a shoulder 18.
' Arranged within the sleeve 14 and bearing against the valve 17 is a coiled spring 19 which is retained within the sleeve 14 by 7 atransversely extending retaining pin '20.
The outer wall or front wall 6 of the receptacle is formed with a number of openings corresponding to the number of the sleeves 14 and as shown the wall 6 has three spaced openings as indicated at 21. The wall of each of said openings is threaded. The reduced portion 15 of the sleeve '14 extends through an opening 21 and threadedly en 7 when closed proiect slightly beyond theouter face of the form 1.
The invention provides for the color applying device being interposed in the form 1 and further provides when the form 1 is cast to have it-set up with openings of the desired area to snugly receive the color applying means ordevice.
When the valve or valves 17 is or are depressed the suction created by the revolving of the roller 4 Will assist in the feed of the color medium 13 which also will feed by gravity when the valve or valves 17 is or are depressed inwardly to provide for the opening of the outer endor ends of the sleeve or sleeves.
The plate 11- is removably connected by the hol-dfast devices 22 to enable the convenient filling of the receptacle when required. The receptacle will be Wedgingly secured to the end walls of the openings 3. On discharge of the liquid 13 it will be conducted by the sleeve orsleeves towards the work and will be applied on the latter when a valve or the valves is or are depressed.
It is thought the many advantages of a combined printing and color applying element in accordance with this invention, as well as the method of manufacturing the same can'be readily understood, and although the preferredembodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details can be had which fallwithin the scope of the invention as claimed.
