This invention relates to new and useful im rovements in a How tester.
e object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the character described, spel cially adapted to be let down into a well bore and efectivo to ascertain the character of duid in a stratum being tested.
Another object of the invention is to provide an appratus of the character described throu h w 'ch a sample of the fluid contains in a stratum in a well bore vmay b e obtained and brought to the ound surface and the character of such fluid and the approximate amount o iiuid borne by said stratum thus ascertained. A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the'character described which is of very simple construction and may be easil manipulated 'and which is ver f cient or the urpose intended.

There is an elongated key 9 which has a pivotal connection with the actuatin stem and which runs in between the turns o the thread 5, said turns forming a reversely spiralled continuous keyway.
The lower end of the housing 6 is formed into a valve cage 10 Whose lower end has an annular internal fiange -11 into which is threaded the tubular packer support 12 and on this support there is a suitable packer 13 which is clamped between the u per plate 14, which abuts the lower end of t e cage 10, and the jamb nut 15 which is screwed onto the packer support and abuts'the lowei` end of the packer. This cham er is provided to contain a lubricant for the actuating stem and the barrel and for the thread 5 of the latter and this Ylubricant is retained a ainst escape by means of the packing glen s 18 and 19 around the barrel and actuating stem, respectively, above said chamber, and the packing beneath said chamber. The apparatus above described is then assembled as shown, with the valve 22 in closed v said stratum, and up through the packer and will' operate through the key 9 and thread 5 to first drive the barrel downwardly until the seat. 27 contacts with and opens the valve 22. The fluid in the stratum to be tested will then be forced by the pressure on said fluid, through the perforated nipple 16, opposite support 12 and cage 10 into the barrel 4. A continued rotation of the stems 1 and 4 to the right will be effective, through the key 9 "and thread 5 to reverse the direction of movement of the barrel 4 and said barrel will be lifted off of the valve 22 and said valve will be closed, by the spring 23, and the fluid in the barrel will be trapped therein and may be withdrawn, with the apparatus, to the ground surface for inspection.
If oil is found to exist in paying quantities in the tested stratum the casing may then be set in the bore and the well completed. lf such oil is not found to exist the hole may be abandoned, or deepened without setting casing therein until paying oil is found.'
The threads connecting the joints of the drill stem as well as those connecting the drill stein to the actuating stem and connecting the sections of the housing are usually all right hand threads and in opening and closing the valve 22, in o erating the tester, the stems 1 and 2 being a ways turned to the right there will be no liability of unscrewing and separating any of the connected parts.
It is obvious that mechanical changesmay be made in the structure and equivalents substituted for the parts shown and I reserve the right to make such mechanical changes, substitutions and adaptations as will not depart from the principle of the invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
