The presentinvention relates to means for retaining` toolsin their holders and yet permitting them to have sufficient play to be fully operative, the object being to provide a novel mounting for the retainer and novel meansot` a simple and eiective nature for holding it aga-inst movement.
1n the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment et the invention. Figure 2 is aplan view with the mounting 'for the retainer shown in section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3A isa front elevation showing the retainer in its inoperative position.
Figure i is a side elevation with a portion shown insection on the line 1 -1 otFigure 3.
Figure 5 is a'detail sectional view on the line 55-otFigure 4.
Figure 6 is a detail view of the journal end of one of the retainer side arms and its coactingv holding washer, the two being in separated relation.
1n the embodiment disclosed, the tool holder may beot any well known character,` and includesl a housing?, having a. socket for receiving the butt end of a drill steel 8 or other tool, said steel having the usual collar 9. The housing' is provided on one side with a transverse enlargement constituting ajournal box 10 and the internal walls ots'aid box are provided with longitudinal slots, torming keyways 11. The end portions moreover have enlarged bores 12, the walls of which constitute journal bearings.
The retainer is in the form of a yoke 13 adapted to embrace the shank of the drill steel 8 in advance of the collar 9. The space 14 within the yoke is suiiicient to receive the shank of the steel, but insufficient to permit the passage oi' the collar; The yoke is provided with substantially straight integral side arms 15, and the rear ends ot said side arms are laterally curved, as shown at 16 and terminate in ears 17. These ears have inwardly extending bosses 18 that fit in the enlarged bores 12 of the journal box 10 so that a pivotal mounting is thus provided `for the yoke. The housing 7 is provided in advance of the journal box 10 with oppositely outstanding lugs `19 that serve to limit the swinging movementl of the yoke in one direction by engaging the side arms when the yoke is in its operative positions or as shown in Figure 1. 'noted that the oiiset portions 16 of the side arms engage behind f the yoke and consequently receive the strain due to the striking or" the collar 9 of the steel 8 against the yoke. rihis materially relieves the bearings of the side arms from such strain.
Passing centrally through the ournal box 10 and through the ears 17 and bosses 18 is a pivotbolt 20, one end of said bolt having a head 21 located against one orn the ears 17,..-
the otherend having a crowned nut 22 threaded thereon and held by a suitable Cotter pin 23. On this bolt are slidablv mounted holding washers 24 provided with outstanding ings 25 constituting keys that .slidably engage in the keyways 11, said washers thus being held against rotation. The washers are provided on their outer sides with ribs 26 that are adapted to engage in either of the sets of sockets 27 and 28 formed in the in- 1 ner ends ot the bosses 18, accordingly as to whether the yoke is in its operative or in its inoperative position. lSurrounding the central portion ot the pivot bolt 2O. is. a coiled spring 29, the ends ot which :bear against theV inner sides et the holding washers 24- and thus urge thenioutwardly against the bosses 18.
Vith this structure, it will be clearvthat when the retainer is in its operative position or as Ashown inFigui-es 1and2, the ribs 26 will be engaged in the sockets 27 and the yoke will bellieldin such operative position. [it the same time if sufficient pressure is brought against the yoke, it will be turned and the ribs 28 will then ride outl or" the .sockets 27 and enter the sockets 28 when the yoke is in its inoperative position Oras shown in Figures 3 and 4;. The yoke Ywill thus be held in such inoperative position. n
From thetoregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without urtherdescription, and it willvbe under- When so positioned, it will be f stood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages oi the invention.
Vhat I claim, is:
l. The combination with a tool holder, of a tool retainer including a collar engaging yoke portion having an open side, a substantially straight arm carrying said yoke portion and having` an o'li'set rear terminal extending laterally on the open side of the yoke portion, and pivoted to one side of the holder, and a stop lug on the tool holder adjacent the pivot mounting and against the rear side of which the olset terminal abuts to limit the swinging movement of the arm and collar engaging yoke portion when embracing a tool and act as an abutment to receive pulling strain on the retainer, said arm being located longitudinallyv ott and in the same plane with the tool when the offset terminal abuts the stop lug.
2. The combination with a tool holder, of a tool retainer including a collar embracing yoke having an open side, substantially straight side arms extending rearwardly from the ends of the yoke and having rear terminal portions ol'set laterally7 on the open side of the yoke and pivotally mounted on one side of the holder, and outstanding stop lugs carried by the holder and about which. the offset terminals hook and abut when the yoke embraces a tool to limit the swinging movement of the arms and also to take the pulling strain on the side arms due to the tool collar striking the yoke, said side arms being located longitudinally of and on opposite sides of the tool and in the plane thereof when the offset terminals abut the stop lugs.
3. The combination with a tool holder having a tool receiving socket and a transverse box, of a pivot bolt in the box, a tool retainer having an arm mounted on one end oi the pivot bolt, a washer slidably mounted on the pivot bolt and detachably interlocking with the portion of the arm adjacent the bolt, and a coiled spring on the pivot bolt in the box bearing against the washer.
4. The combination with a tool holder having a tool receiving socket and a transverse box, of a pivot bolt in the box, a tool retainer having an arm mounted on the pivot bolt and journaled on the end oi the box, a washer slidably mounted on the pivot bolt and detachably interlocking with the portion of the arm adjacent the bolt, said washer being slidably interlocked with the box and thereby held against rotation, and a coiled spring on the pivot bolt bearing against the washer.
5. The combination with a tool holder having a tool receiving socket and a transverse box, of a pivot bolt in the box, a tool retaining `yoke having side arms mounted on the ends of the pivot bolt, devices on the bolt and in the box that detachably interlock with the side arms, and a spring on the bolt within the box, said spring being located between and pressing the devices outwardly into engagement with the arms.
6. The combination with a tool holder having a tool receiving socket and a transverse box, of a pivot bolt in the box, a tool retaining yoke having side arms mounted on the ends of the pivot bolt, washers slidably mounted on the bolts in the box, slidably interlocked against rotation with the walls of the box and detachably interlocking with the side arms adjacent the pivot bolt, and a coiled spring on the bolt within the box between the washers and pressing the same outwardly against the arms.
'l'. rIhe combination with a tool holder having a socket for the reception oi a tool and including a housing having a transverse journal box, a pivot bolt extending through the box, a tool retaining yoke having side arms provided with terminal bearing heads journaled in the ends of the box and surrounding the pivot bolt, said journal box having internal keyways, washers slidable on the bolt and having key lugs engaged in the keyways, said washers having portions on their outer sides detachably interlocking with the bearing heads of the yokes side arms, and a coiled spring on the bolt within the journal box and pressing the washers outwardly.
8. The combination with a tool holder having a socket for the reception of a tool and including a housing having a transverse ournal box, a tool retaining yoke having side arms provided with terminal bearing heads extending on the inner sides of the side arms and journaled in the ends of the box, and spring pressed members in the journal box between the heads, said members being slidably interlocked against rotation with the walls of the journal box and having detachable interlocking engagements with the heads for holding the arms and yoke in dilierent positions.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
