IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,393, dated July 25, 1876;ap plication filed March 11, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HANSFORD TUTT, of Danville, in the county of Boyle, and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the iollowing is a lull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

A represents an inclined frame, of any suitable dimensions supported upon legs B B. In the lower part or the frame A is a roller, 0, journaled in the sides thereof, and in the upper part of the frame is another roller, I), also journaled in the sides of the frame, and provided with a crank, E, for turning the same. The upper roller I) is of larger diameter, and corrugated longitudinally, as shown, while the lower roller 0 is smooth. 130th rollers have two or more circumferential grooves, in which are placed endless cords b b, provided at suitable intervals with loops (4 a. Between the two rollers is a board, G, over which the clothes are carried while washing. Under or. back of the upper corrugated roller 1) is a board, H, pivoted at its low-er end in the sides of the frame A, and its upper end acted on by springs I I, to hold the same against the roller. The upper side of the board H is provided with a corrugated sheet-metal plate, making a wash-board of said board H.

The machine thus constructed is tobe placed on the bottom of a waslvtub, and may be fastened thereto,if desired, by an y suitable means.

The clothes are attached to the cordsb by simply passing a part thereof through the loops a. The crank E is then turned so that the clothes will pass up and over the roller 1), and down between said roller and the washboard H d, back into the tub of water; thence around the bottom roller 0, and up again to the top, and so on.

I am aware that washing-machines having endless cords passing over rollers for carrying the clothes around the same, and having a yielding wash-board, against which the clothes are rubbed, are not new. Hence, I do not claim such as my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
