W/T/VE6 5E Patented May 5, 1931 tartar 'QFFHQE CHARLES F. WELDON, OF LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN PRINTERS QUOIN CHASE Application filed December 22, 1828.
This invention relates to improvements in printing-presses and more particularly to a novel chase and quoin assemblage for such presses.
The types of quoins now in general use and which are of various makes and sizes, present decided disadvantages, in their use, inasmuch as they are assembled within the chase frame and are adjusted to effect clamping of the type composition within the chase and in using such quoins, extreme care must be exercised in selecting the proper sizesthereof and in properly arrangement the same and inasmuch as the quoins are parts separate from and not connected in any way with the chase, there is very frequently a misplacement of the quoins thus causing delay and considerable inconvenience. Furthermore the adjustment of the quoins to effect locking of the type composition within the chase is ordinarily maintained merely by a frictional contact between the quoins and the sides of the chase and frequently the quoins become displaced or loosened with a resultant damage to the printing-press and a loss of considerable time and labor which is involved in resetting the type in the event of such a mishap. Therefore, in View of the disadvantages which attend the use of the ordinary types of quoins, the present invention has as one of its important objects to provide an assemblage comprising a chase, and quoins assembled with the chase and permanently associated therewith and adjustable with respect thereto so as to overcome the disadvantages attending the loss or misplacing of quoins of the ordinary construction and likewise insuring against any displacement of the quoins in such a manner as would result in release of the type composition.
In order that accurate and uniform impressions may be made from a type composition, it is essential that even pressure be ex erted against all four sides of the composition but it is difficult, in the use of the ordinary quoins which are separate from the chase, to obtain such an accuracy of degree of pressure as to bring about this desirable uniformity of pressure on the type compo- Serial No. 327,881.
sition and therefore the present invention has as a further object to provide a quoin chase assemblage comprising a chase frame and quoins mounted upon adjacent walls of the frame and adjusting means for the quoins so constructed as to provide for a fine or accurate degree of adjustment of the quoins bodily, the invention further embodying means coacting with the quoins and with the sides of the chase frame upon which they are mounted, for maintaining the quoins in position with their engaging faces precisely parallel to the said walls of the chase both in the operation of the adjusting means to feed the quoins inwardly to clamping position and in the retracting operation to retract the quoins from clamping engagement with the type composition. Therefore the present invention contemplates a construction in which the quoins are automatically at all times held parallel to the sides of the chase frame upon -which they are mounted thereby insuring of even pressure of each quoin, for its entire length, against the type composition or, more specifically, the furniture which is disposed about the composition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a quoin chase assemblage of such construction that the quoins are movable only in one direction, namely, toward and away from the side wall of the chase frame upon which they are mounted, so that there can be no longitudinal or vertical displacement or any other movement of the quoins which would be liable to disturb the arrangement of the type in the composition or result in an uneven pressure being exerted against the furniture confining the comp ositiona While the accompanying drawings and the description which is to follow, constitute a disclosure of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of what is claimed.
' In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the quoin chase assemblage embodying the invention, the view illustrating, in broken lines, the furniture which is disposed about the sides of the type composition within the chase which sides are to receive pressure from the quoins, and the quoins being illustrated in this figure in engaging or clamping position;
Figure 2 is a detail fragmentary horizontal sectional view through a portion of the chase and one of the quoins and illustrating the means provided for guiding and adjusting the quoins;
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows;
Figure l is a fragmentary sectional perspective view of one corner of the chase frame;
Figure 5 is a group perspective view illustrating the component parts of one of the quoins separated from the chase frame.
The chase frame of the assemblage embodying the invention is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and is of the usual rectangular form and, in order that the quoins, which embody the invention, may be mounted in the frame together with the adjusting means for the quoins, the said frame is formed in each of two relatively adjacent sides, with two or more recesses 2 which recesses are preferably equi-disantly spaced, or nearly so, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. For a purpose to be presently explained, the inner plane wall 3 of each recess, which wall is parallel to the inner wall of the side or end member of the frame 1 in which the recess is formed, is provided, in turn, with a longitudinally extending recess 4, the recess 2 including, in addition to the plane inner wall 3, end walls 5 which occupy planes at right angles to the said wall 8, and the recess 4 being defined by an inner plane wall and end walls 6 which are at right angles there-to and equi-distantly spaced with respect to the corresponding end walls 5 of the recess 2. It willbe observed that both the recesses 2 and i open through the upper and under sides of the chase frame member in which they are formed and it will likewise be observed by reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings that the recesses are of substantially the same depth.
The equoins of the assemblage are indicated in general by the numeral 7 and each quoin comprises an oblong rectangular body 8 which is of a length equal .to the length of the recess 2 in which it is mounted, so that its ends will nearly abut the end walls 5 of the recess,
and the said body is of a height equal to the thickness :of the wall of the chase frame 1 in which the recesses 2 are formed, the body 8 being furthermore of a thickness equal substantially to the width of the end walls 5 of the recess 2 or in other words .of a width substantially equal to the depth of the recess so that when the body is fully retracted and seated in the recess in which it is arranged, its face which is presented inwardly, will occupy the same plane as that occupied by the inner side of the frame member in which the recess is formed. The invention contemplates adjustment of the quoin bodies with respect to the members of the chase frame in the recesses in which they are mounted, so as to adapt the plane faces of the quoin bodies to bear against the furniture which is arranged to enclose the type composition, and in order that the body 8 of each quoin may be supported and guided in its adjustment, cylindrical sockets 9 are formed in the inner plane wall 3 of the recess 2 in which the quoin body is to be mounted and these sockets are located adjacent the end walls 5 of the said recess. The body 8 of the quoin is provided upon that face opposite the face which is to constitute the pressure face, near each "end thereof, with a tubular stem 10 and'these stems are snugly slidably fitted in the sockets 9, so that, inasmuch as the sockets are parallel to each other, as are also the stems, the bodies of thequoins will be maintained in parallelism to the sides of the chase frame in all positions of adjustment of said bodies. The stems 10 are tubular and the bores of the stems extend the entire length thereof, and compression springs 11 are fitted into the bores of the stems and, in their expanded form, are of considerably greater length than the stems. In assembling the quoin with the chase frame, the quoin is disposed opposite the recess 2 in which it is to be mounted and the said ends of the stems are guided into the sockets and the stems are then slid into the sockets, the springs 11 engaging at their projecting ends against the inner end walls of the sockets, as shown in Figures 2 and :3 of the drawings, and the springs, being of the length stated, are thus placed under tension and the tendency of the springs is therefore to'force the quoin outwardly from the recess in which it is seated. In order that this movementof the quoins may be restricted and likewise in order that force may be exerted against the quoin in order to cause it to exert pressure against the furniture in the chase, means is provided which will now be .described.
The means referred to comprises a screw 12 having reversely threaded end portions 13 extending :between its extremities and the opposite'faces of a polygonal head 14: is formed midway between the ends of the screw shank, and a. threaded socket 15 is formed in the side of the chase frame and opens through the inner wall 4 of the recess 2 midway between the end walls 6 of said recess, and a threaded opening 16 is formed in the quoin body 8 intermediate the ends thereof, the threads of the socket l5 and opening 16 being reversely directed, so that the threaded ends of the adjusting screw 12,
when engaged in the socket 15 and opening 16, will serve to connect the body of the quoin with the side of the chase frame with which it is assembled, and it will now be evident that by rotation of the screw 12, through the application of a suitable wrench to the polygonal head 14 thereof, the head being freely accommodated within the recess 4, the quoin body may be adjusted either inwardly or outwardly and, in the rotation of the screw in a direction to provide for outward adjustment of the quoin with respect to the recess and consequently its adjustment into binding engagement with the furniture of the type composition within the chase, the quoin will not only be moved outwardly by the feeding action of the threads of the screw, but also by the pressure exerted by the springs 11, in their expansion so that the quoin will be steadied in its outward adjustment from the recess and thus maintained and guided exactly in parallelism with the side of the quoin chase, the engagement of the stems 10 in the sockets 9 preventing any play or displacement of the quoins with respect to the said side of the chase frame, and likewise preventing any play between the threads of the screw and those of the socket 15 and opening 16. Therefore the invention contemplates a positive adjustment of each quoin of the structure by a rotative adjustment of the respective screw 12 and it will be evident that there is a positive movement imparted to each quoin, as it is adjusted, and that there is no likelihood of any displacement or distortion of the quoin either before or after it has been brought into binding engagement with the furniture in the chase. It will be evident therefore that the present invention provides a means whereby quoins are mounted in a chase frame and held against any displacement, means being, at the same time, provided for adjusting the quoins and for positively maintaining the quoins parallel to the sides of the chase frame upon which they are mounted, at all periods 1n the operation of adjustment, thereby insuring of a positive and secure clamping of the type composition and the furniture assembled therewith, in the chase frame and effectually providing against any disarrangement of the composition.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A printing-press chase and quoin assemblage comprising a chase frame, aquoin, the chase frame having spaced sockets therein, spaced stems upon the quoin of greater length than the thickness of said quoin slidably fitting in said sockets and constituting means for slidably supporting the quoin with respect to the said side of the chase frame for adjustment toward and from the same and bracing the quoin when the quoin is moved beyond the chase frame and preventing lateral displacement of the quoin, the said stems and sockets constituting also means for maintaining the said quoin parallel to the said side of the frame, springs within the sockets coacting and extending within said stems and urging the stems outwardly in the sockets and constituting means for normally urging the quoin'away from the said side of the frame, the quoin and frame having threaded sockets therein in opposition to each other, the threads in the sockets being oppositely directed, and an adjusting screw having oppositely threaded end portions fitting in said sockets and an intermediate head of polygonal contour for the application of a tool for effecting adjustment of said screw to effect positive adjustment of the quoin in either direction with respect to the said side of the frame.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
