The invention relates to brackets forfluse in supporting both curtains and shades at window openings and the like.- I
An object of the invention is to provide a '5} bracket of the character described in which one structure is arranged to support corresponding ends of a curtain rod and a shade I roller.
Another object of the invention is to provide brackets of the character described in which the curtain rod and shade roller supporting portions are relatively adjustable.
A further object of the invention is to pro adopted within the scope of the inventionas' set forth in the claims.

ith the usual type of spring roller used for supporting shades, the mounting thereof at a window has involved the use of brackets or other supporting means for engaging the trunnions thereof in a predetermined fixed 1928. Serial No. 272,415;
relation in accordance with the length of the roller whereby an exact fitting of the brackets thereto is necessary when the roller is initially installed. Thereafter, unless a new roller is exactlythe same length asone which is to be replaced, the brackets must be moved for the installation thereof, so
that the necessary fitting of the brackets to the roller or the roller tothe brackets involves a considerable amount of time and effort and a mutilation of the casing. This situation is also generally true for the mounting of curtains at a Window, the width and spacing of the side casings thereat usually being determining factors as to the spacing of the supports for the curtain. In accord ance with the present invention, the foregoing and other difficultie'sare overcome by provlding unitary bracket members for dispo'sal at opposite sides of a Window and. having shade and curtain support means thereon, with one of said means adjustable with'respeotto theother laterally of the'window.

In the present embodiment, the base 6 comprisesan elongated member of .eonstant transverse section' arranged to "be horizontally disposed along the face of a window casing 13 on which the bracket is mounted. Preferably, the base member 6 isarranged to be disposed in spaced relation from the casing 13 and spacing members 14 areaccordingly provided for this pur-. pose. As shown, the spacing members 14 areintegral with the base and extend rearwardly therefrom at its ends with their rearwardedg'es arranged for a flat seated engagement against a casing. The base structure thus provided may be secured to the casing in any suitable manner, as by screws 16 engaged through openings 17 provided in the base for the purpose.
The arm 7, it will now be noted, is integral with the base 6 and extends forwardly therefrom at an extremity thereof. Preferably, and as shown, the arm 7 and a spacing member 14 cooperate with each other to provide a continuous surface 18 across the end of the base thereat, and such arm and member, being the most visible part of the bracket, are preferably given some artistic outline. in the present instance, tne curtain pole 8 to be supported is of the straight type, and the arm 7 is accordingly provided in the upper edge thereof with a notch 19 for the reception of the pole end, the notch being so related to the casing 13 as to dispose the pole in properly spaced relation to the casin It will of course be obvious that for curtain poles having spacing arms extending laterally therefrom, the present bracket arms 7 would be shortened, or even omitted, and appropriate means would be provided for supportedly engaging the arms of the latter type of rod.
The arm 9, it will now be noted, is carried on a member 21 mounted on the base 6 for adjustable disposal therealong and having the general form of an inverted U whereby the front and rear legs 22 and 23 respectively of this member engage along opposite sides of the base to prevent rocking of the member in the plane of said legs, and the intermediate portion 24L of the member transversely overlies said base. It is noted that the spaced relation of the base portion 12 from the easing 13 is arranged to provide for the insertion of the leg 23 of the member 21 behind the portion 12. As shown, the arm 9 extends generally forwardly and upwardly from the member 21 as an integral part thereof and in its general plane and is provided with av suitable recess for the reception of a roller trunnion.
It will now be notedthat the brackets 5 of my invention would be provided in pairs, and that the brackets of a pair are substantially alike except that the arms 7 thereof are at opposite ends of the base portions, which portions are installed in aligned relation. Vfhen, as shown, the brackets 9 are to be used for the cooperative support of a shade roller of the spring type in which one trunnion 26 is fixed to the roller and the other trunnion 27 comprises a flattened and protruding end of a spring controlled floating shaft, the recesses of the two brackets 9would also differ slightly, the recess 28 for the reception of the trunnion 26 being here shown in the form of a circular perforation, while the recess 29 provided for the flattened trunnion 27 is in the form of a notch for receiving and holding the latter trunnion against turning therein.
Means are provided for releasably securing the bracket carrying member 21 in adjusted position along the base 6. As particularly shown in the embodiments of Figures 1 and 2, such means comprises the provision of a set of notches 31 along the top edge of the base in any one of which the lower edge of the portion 2 1 of the member 21 is arranged to be seated. To prevent a pivotal movement of the member 21 about its bearing in a notch 31, the latter is preferably arranged to be fixed against such movement by fixing it to the base 6 at another point thereof spaced from the notches 31. Accordingly, and as shown, the forward 22 of the member 21 provided with a threaded opening extending therethrough transversely of the base 6 and having mounted the sin a thumbscrew 32 having the inner end of its bolt arranged to engage the base 6. Preferably, and as shown, the base 6 is provided with a plurality of perforations for the reception of the inner end of the thumb screw 32, there being a perforation 33 corresponding to each notch 31, whereby the notch and the thumbscrew may be simultaneously operative to fix the member 21 in adjusted and immovable position on the base 6. The spacing of the notches 31 and perforations 33 is, of course, such as permits allowable differences between adjacent settings of the member 21. When, as shown, the member 21 is in the general form of a relatively thin plate, the leg 22 thereof may be thickened at the thumbscrew 32, as shown. The thumbscrew 32, it will be noted, not only functions to prevent a longitudinal or swinging displacement of the member 21, but also serves to prevent its upward displacement for releasing the member from its engagement with the base 6. It will be obvious that, if desired, the thumbscrew 32 may be arranged to threadedly engage the perforations 33 rather than the member 21 without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Means are also provided for insuring a proper disposal of the member 21 prior to the operative disposition of the thumbscrew, and as shown, such means comprises the pro vision of a series of projections 34- extending forwardly from the haze 6 adjacent the lower edge thereof and defining notches 36 between them for the reception of the inner edge of the front leg 22 of the member 21 when the latter is mounted in adjusted position on the base. In this manner, the alignment of the thumbscrew 32 with the appropriate perforation 33 is insured, and the effecting of a setting of the member 21 is facilitated. Though this is a preferred structure, I have shown in Figure 3 an embodiment in which the projections 34:, and the notches 36 defined between them, are omitted, the base member 37 thereof being otherwise the same scribed embodiment.
In the event that means for preventing an upward displacement of the member carrying the adjustable arm is deemed unnecessary, the thumbscrew may be omitted from the structure, as is shown in the embodiment of Figure 4. I11 this form of the invention, the member 41 carrying the shade roller supporting arm 42 is formed generally as is the previously described member 21. The base 43 of this embodiment provides an arm 44 for supporting a curtain pole at one end thereof, and is provided along its top andbottom edges with sets of forwardly extending projections 46 and 47 respectively. Successive projections of the respective sets provide notches 48 and 49 for the simultaneous rea as inthe first deception of the rear edge of a forward leg 51 of the member 41. By this means, the member 41is held in set position against longitudinal or swinging movement along the base '43, but may at all times be freed from such position by lifting it upwardly to clear the projections 46 and 47. The present provision of the two sets of notches onthe same face of the base 43, it will be noted, further and materially simplifies this embodiment as compared with those previously described.
While I have herewith particularly disclosed the curtain rod supporting means of slidable along and vertically displaceable relative to said plate, said plate having a row of openings therein and a screw carried by said U shaped member and arranged to be extended into and withdrawn from said open ings.
