Description

Patented Apr. 28, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT-formen*:L
ERNESTJ. ALLEN, F LONG- ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK'AyASSIG-NOR TO`PARROTT DRY PROCESS STREET CLEANER COMPANY, INC., YORK, 4N. Y., .Ar CORPORATION 0F DELAWARE i Application led May 14,
This invention relates to street cleaning y 5 character indicated,.and capable of enlargement in its circumference to compensate for` wear of its bristles.
Also my invention comprises the employment of means wherebyV the brush may be expanded varia-bly at its opposite ends, there-V by enabling a greater degree of brush expansion at the end near the street curb, for the purpose of more thoroughly sweeping along the depressed or gutter portion of the street.
Still further my invention comprehends the structure of an expansible brush composed of longitudinal segments having radial telescopic means of adjustment relative to a common hub, combined with lengthwise sepa-V rated expanding means operable either in uniformityl or in different degrees.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of a brush provided with my improved means of expansion. Y
Fig. 2 is a partial similar view, showing the brush segments expanded, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig'. 2.
In said figures let 1 indicate ashaft revolubly mounted in bearings 2, 2 carried by hangers 3, 3 that are suitably supported vby the.frame(not shown) of a street sweeping machine. A
Secured in spaced relation uponshaft 1 are the hub members 5, 5 each having connected thereto a series of Vtubular radial spokes 6, adapted respectively to receive rods 7 that are oscillably carried by the head portions 8 of brush segments having the bristles 9, said brush segments all being of full brush lenoth.
It will be noted that with the rodsV 7 fully ensheathed within the tubular spokes 6, as shown in Fig. 1 the brush segments are contracted to the smallest diameter of the brush, and that with said rods 7 extended as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the brush segments are there- 192s. serial m1271635.
by expanded to increase the diameter of the The brush expanding means consist of sets of links 10 between the brush segments anda collar 11 'that is slidable upon shaftl, each link having pivotal engagement with a lug 12 upon the head 8 of a brush segment and its the inward travel of said collar, thereby determining the degreey of expansion permitted the brush segments. v
The shaft 1, at each end portion, beyond the collars 11, is provided with a screw thread 15, and a hand wheel 16 engages said thread by means of its hub portion 17, which lhubV portion is in revoluble engagement with the slidable collar 11. Hence, upon turning the hand wheel 16 its axial movement is communicated to collar 11, thereby having the effect, through links 10, of moving the brush segments radially, to expand or contract thebrush according to the direction of rotation imparted to said hand wheel.
It will be understood that as `the two sets of expanding means are separately operable with respect to the opposite end portions of the shaft, in consequence the brush segments at one end may be expanded to a greater extent than the brush segments at the other end, and further that in this dierentialexpansion of the brush a somewhat loose fit of the rods 7 in the tubular spokes 6 thereby permits the brush at its more expanded end to assume a 'conoidal form thatadapted it to have closel sweeping contact in a gutter-like depression of theroad.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim: Y
1. Ina street sweeping machine, in combination, a revoluble shaft,` an ge'xpansible brush composed of longitudinal segments, telescopic engaging means between said shaft and segments, collars slidably carried by said shaft, links Connecting said collars and said segments and means borne by said shaft and cooperating with said collars to move said segments radially toV expand said brush.
2. A brush for street sweeping machines comprisinga series of radially disposed longitudinal brush segments7 a central shaft, tubular spokes extended radially from said shaft, rods cariedv by said brush segments,v
said' rodsjhaving loose telescopic engagementV with said spokes, a collar sli-dablyv mounted vupon each end portion of said shaftl links y connecting each of said collars te said seg-V ments, and a hand Wheel threadedly, carried by each end portion Vof said shaft, each Wheel being` seleepively operable and adapted toco-` operate with the respective collars whereby said brush may bek expanded variably at its A opposite ends.. n v
