COMBINATION SCREW DRIVER AND PLIERS Filed Nov. 29, 1929 INVENTOR.
A TT ORNE Y.
Patented Apr. 28, 1931 ALFRED r. MUELLER, or. BAY crrY, MICHIGAN f COMBINATION scasw nitrvnn'eivn r IERs Application filed November 29, 1929. Serial 110,410,352.
Another object is to design a compound tool provided with sharp jaws which grip the head of the screw when the screw driver blade engages the slot in the head, eliminating the possibility of chipping and breaking the side walls of the slot.
A further object is to provide a simple, substantial, and convenient compound tool, which can be readily manufactured and assembled, and which is easy and handy to use.
A further object still is to provide adjustable means for holding the screw driver blade firmly in the slot in the screw head.
With the above and other objects in View, thepresent invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying. drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion, andminor details of construction, without departing from the spirit, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing.
Fig. 1 is an edge view of my improved compound tool the dotted lines showing the cam lever in raised position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, the dotted lines illustrating the pliers in open position.
Fig. 8 is a detail side view of the slot engaging blade.
Fig. 4: is a sectional end view taken on the line 4.4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary edge view showing the tool in position for removing a stove bolt.
In the removal of stove bolts and screws which are rusted in place, with a conven tional screwdriver, the side walls of the slot in the head chip and break, sothat slot is destroyed, and the head must then be chiseled off, and I have therefore perfected a very simple compound tool by means of which the bolts can be readily removed without the necessity of chiseling.
Referring now particularly to the drawing, my improved tool comprises a pair of Eran STATES rAr-anr-ol-"Flce' handle members 6 and 7 respectively, piv- I otally connected together by means of the pivot pin 8, the lower end which extends. through these handles being reduced and shouldered, and the handle 6 is counterbored as shown at 9 so that the end of the pivot pin may be headed over as at 10 to provide a smooth flat bottom surface.
The front ends of the handles terminate in jaws 11 and 12 respectively, the outer edge-of each jaw being rounded as shown, the .bottom' surface being also slightly rounded inboth. a transverse and longitudinal plane, so that the ends will be pointed,
the inner gripping edge 13 of each jaw being 'chamfered and beveled so that a sharp edge is provided. Y
The pivot pin 8 projects above the top of the handles, and is formed with a centrally: disposed slot 1 1 in which a screw driver blade 15 is mounted, the front end 16 projecting downwardly and is wedge shaped, similar to the blade of a conventional screw driver, the opposite end having a short downwardly projecting leg 17, and
a pin 18 serves as a stop to limit longitudinal'movement of the blade in the slot.
A cam lever 19 is pivotally mounted in the slot by means of the pin 20, and this lever is designed to hold the blade firmly in the slotted head of the stove bolt 21, and when in position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of thedrawing, this blade can be raised a limited distance as indicated by the dotted lines, but when the tool is in use, the thumb of the operator engages the thumb rest 22 of the lever to hold it firmly in position. A spring 23 is anchored to the lever signature.
and to the handle member 7 and tends to hold the lever down.
In practice the plier handles are spread as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the screw driver blade is inserted in the slot in the bolt head, the handles are then forced towards each other, and the knife edges of the jaws firmly grip the bolt head, the thumb is placed on the lever thumb rest, thetool turned clock wise, and the bolt or screw can be easily removed without destroyingthe slot, making it unnecessary to chisel off the head of the bolt, or use other means for its removal.
From the foregoing description, will be obvious that I have perfected a very simple, handy and substantial compound tool for. removing stove bolts and round headed screws having slotted heads.
What I claim is 1. A compound tool of the class described,
comprising a pair of pliers having beveled gripping jaws, a slotted pivot pin projecting above the pliers, a longtiudinally disposed screw driver blade mounted in said slot and means for holding said blade in position.
2. A compound tool of the class described, comprising a pair of pliers having sharp edged gripping jaws, a slotted pivot pin projecting above the face of said plier, an adjustable screw driver blade mounted on said pivot pin, and means for holding said blade in adjusted position. c o
3. A compound tool of the classdescribed, comprising a pair of handles having slightly rounded sharp edged gripping jaws, a pivot pin connecting said handles and projecting above the face thereof, a screw driver blade mounted on said pivot pin with its end 6X-' tending between said jaws, and means for holding said blade in set position.
. 4; A compound tool of the class described, comprising similar handle members having jaws formed with sharp gripping edges, a
slotted pivot pin connecting said handles and projecting above the same, a longitudinally disposed member loosely mounted in said slot, the front end projecting downwardly and being sharpened to form a blade, and a cam mounted on said pin for holding said longitudinally disposed member inset position. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my ALFRED F. MUELLER."
