This invention relates generally to slitting devices, and has more particularly reference to-score-cut slitting devices'to divide a web of flexible material into longitudinal sections.
One of the d-ifliculties encountered in the art of slittinga'web o'f flexible material the vibration, due to the high speedof-modern slitting machines, of slitting members. 1 The effect of such vibration is to cause, at times,
a chattering of the slitting eleinent with re-- spect to the'backing roller, a deviaticin of the cutter from a straight line and a reluctance of the cutting element to equal the high-speed of the flowing-web. These-diificulties can'be' 5 largely traced-to u'ndue heaviness, in proportion to other arts, of the slitting element, and the main 0 ject'and feature of the invention is to lessen the weight of the slitter mounting,'toinsure free rotation of the slitting element at high speeds while'at thesame time steadying said-element to thereby prevent it from leaving its straight path or trace.

Preferably the cutter holder is a segmentalshape-piece of sheet material formed into' a cup like member and provided at its lower' end with a bushing 16 that rocks on pivot 5 ofthe carrier. Said bushing may be welded. to the sheet material member, and may be age pin 18 of 7 the carrier. It will be seen from the foregoing, that the sprin member exerts its thrust very direct- 1?; 1y an also that the cutter holder is of very light construction and therefore does not cre-* ate a perceptible rebound; furthermore, shaft 22 is of ample proportions in relation to the thickness of the cutter, the steadyingmembers engage said cutter at a point well toward its periphery. and bearings 3 are spaced an appreciable distance apart.
The result of the above construction is that great steadiness of the cutter is obtained, and that said cutter is capable of rotating at very high speeds without rebound or vibration,
the direct thrust of the spring also tending to keep the cutter in a straight trace.
' I claim:
1. A slitting device including: a backing.
roller, a score-cutter to coact therewith, a cutter holder rotatably supporting the scorecutter, a carrier pivotally supporting the cutter holder, and a spring member, anchored on the carrier and exerting its thrust against the cutter holder substantially-in the direc-.
I tion of a line that passes through the centers of the backing roller and score-cutter, to urge said score-cutter toward the backing roller.'
2. A slitting device includingza backing roller, a score-cutter to coact therewith, a cut- -ter holder rotatably supporting the scorecutter, a carrier movable'toward and away from the backing roller and pivotally supporting the cutter holder, and a spring member, anchored on thecarrier and-exerting its thrust against the cutter holder substantially in the direction of a line that passes through the centers of the backing ro ler and scorecutter, to urge said score-cutter toward the backing roller.
3. A slitting device including: a backing roller, a score-cutter to coact therewith, a cutter holder rotatably supporting the scorecutter, a carrier movable toward and away from the backing roller, a pivotal supportat the upper end of the carrier on which the cutter holder is pivotally mounted, a spring member anchored on the carrier below the pivotal support and extending above the same into engagement with the cutter holder to thereby press the score-cutter-against the I having an abutment located in the plane of backing roller.-
4. A slitting device including: a backing roller, a rotatable score-cutter to coact therewith, a pivotally supported cutter holder slitting on that side of the score-cutter that faces away from the backing roller, a carrier, movable toward and away from the backin roller, to pivotally support the cutter holder, and a spring member anchored on the carrier to engage said abutment to thereby press the score-cutter against the backing roller.
5. A mounting for a slitting member, including: a cutter holder, ings on said cutter holder, a shaft rotatably mounted at each end in the bearings of said cutter holder, a slitting cutter mounted to rotate with the shaft, and steadying members also mounted to rotate with the shaft and clamping opposite-sides of the slitting cutter.
6. A mounting for a slitting member inspaced-apart bearh eluding: a cutter holder pivotally supported adjacent its lower end, spaced-apart bearings on said cutter holder, adjacent its upper end, a shaft rotatably mounted at each end in the bearings of said cutter holder, a scorecutter mounted to rotate with .the shaft, steadying members also mounted to rotate with the shaft and clamping opposite sides of the score-cutter, a rotatable backing roller to coact with the cutter, and a spring member to urge the score-cutter toward the backing roller.
7. A slitting device including: a backing roller,'a pivotally supported cutter holder, two spaced-apart bearings on the cutter holder, a rotatable score-cutter mounted in said bearings, a carrier, movable toward and away from the backing roller, to pivotally support the cutter holder, and a spring member anchored on the carrier, to press the score-cutter against the backing roller, located intermediate the bearings, substantially in the plane of slitting, and exerting its thrust against the cutter holder and in the direction of the backing roller.
8. A slitting device including: a backing roller, a rotatable score-cutter to coact therewith, a pivotally supported cutter holder having an abutment located in the plane of slitting on that side of the score-cutter that faces away from the backin movable toward and away rom the backing roller, to pivotally support the cutter holder spaced-apart bearings on the cutter holder to rotatably support the score-cutter therebetween, and a spring member anchored on the carrier to'engage said abutment to thereby press the score-cutter against the backing roller.
9.
