This invention relates to Combination stop and rear end signal lamps for automotive vehicles, and more particularly to the type of lamp having two light chambers illuminated by one incandescent bulb having two spaced filaments differing in candle power and disposed respectively in the light chambers. The light chambers are closed by panes or lenses providing, when illuminated,
the stop and rear end signals, IGSPQClFiVGIY One of the objects of the present invention is to provide'a lamp of this type which is durable and rugged and which may be produced at low cost.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of embodiment of the present invention is clearly shown.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 2 and 3, the lamp housing has its back wall apertured at 21 to receive a plug 22 attached to the flange 23 surrounding the aperture The plug 22 is provided with an opening 24 for receiving a tang 25 bent from the flange 23 into the opening in order toprevent removal of the plug 22 from the housing 20. The plug 22 is provided with a socket 26 for receiving an electrical connection plug 7 which is retained within the socket by the usual bayonet slot of the socket 26, being shown at 27. The lamp door is provided preferably by a molded pane or lens 60 which is held by a be'zel ring 61 against a clamping ring 62' having the same generalshapeas the bezel" ring but small enough to 'fit within the'housing 20. The ring-62 bears against a plurality' of lugs 63 formed'asshown in Figs. 2 and 3 by partly breaking away and bending in thermetal of the housing to form ledges against which-the mounting ring 62 may be clamped when the bezel ring 61 is secured to the housing by the screw (34:. - the pane is provided with a surface 65 adapted to engage the front edge (36 of the partition 39. lhe pane or lens 60 is stained or otherwise colored a ruby red with the exception of the letters of the word Stop which show either deeper or lighter in color by transmitted light than the main portion of the pane 60 in order that there will be a contrast when the stop signal is illuminated.
The bottom wall of the lamp housing is provided with an opening 70 for receiving a pane of glass 71 which is secured by clamp brackets 72 and screws 73. When the lamp is mounted upon the rear of the vehicle so that the pane 71 is slightly above the rear license plate, this plate will be illuminated by a light shining through the pane 71.
The filament 35 is of higher candle power than the filament 36 since the former is burned only intermittently to illuminate the stop signal. These filaments have a common round connection through the metal lamp base 32 and the lamp housing 20 and the vehicle frame to the current source, and are connected respectively with the insulated terminals and 31. The terminal 30 is to be connected with a switch which is operated to close a circuit with the current source and filament 35 when the vehicle brakes are applied. The terminal 31 is to be connected with a switch at the instrument board of a vehicle for completing a circuit between the current source and the filament 36 for illuminating that portion of the pane which is below the partition 39 and serves as a rear end signal or tail lamp.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention, as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed is as follows:
1. A signal lamp comprising a cup-shaped housing, a U-shaped supporting member having its base secured to the rear wall of the housing, one of the legs of the U eXtending across the housing and forming a partition dividing the housing into two compartments, the other leg serving as a suport for lighting means, said partition being apertured and said lighting means extending through the aperture, and a translucent cover for said casing.
