This invention relates to improvements in blanks for paper cups and more particularly, to a cup body blank adapted for use in connection with the forming of a flat bottomed cup, said improved blank including in its design suitable marginal extensions facilitating gripping of the blank during the formation thereof around a flanged cup bottom to produce a flat bottomed cup.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved flat bottomed cup body blank having two arcuate edges and two converging straight edges, one of which is provided with extension means to facilitate gripping of the blank outside of the boundaries there of, during the forming of the blank into a, cup body.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a cup body blank for use in connection with makin a flat bottomed cup, said body blank havlng an integral extension formed on one of the edges thereof, adapted to facilitate gripping of the blank and furthermore ada ted to be positioned to project into the interlor of the cup when formed to act as a spacer for another cup nested therein.

It is an important object of this invention to provide an improved segment shaped cup body blank having a convex edge and a concave edge of difl'erent lengths connected by a pair of straight converging radial edges of equal lengths one of which is provided with an extension to facilitate gripping and forming of the blank into a frustum-shaped body for a flat bottomed cup.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.

This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

On the drawings:

Figure 1 is a developed view of a cup body blank embodying the principles of this invention.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of a flatbottomed cup the body of which is formed from a body blank as illustrated in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a vertical section of the cup illustrated in Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of one end portion of a modified form of a flat bottomed cup body blank provided with a plurality of gripping extensions.

As shown on the drawings:

The reference numeral 1, indicates a paper cup body blank of substantially segment shape having a convex edge 2, and a concave edge 3, shorter than the edge 2. The arcuate edges 2 and 3, are substantially parallel and are connected by two converging radial edges 4 and 5, of substantially the same length. Integrally formed between the ends of the straight radial edge 5, is an extension or tab 6. The blank is adapted to be fed to a forming mandrel having grippers mounted Within recesses thereof and adapted to engage the extension 6, to slightly deflect the same out of the plane of the cup body blank 1, during the rolling or forming of the blank around the mandrel to produce a frustum-shaped cup body 7. The margin 4, is adapted to be adhesived on one side to permit the overlap to be glued to the outer face of the straight margin 5. The arcuate margin 3, of the body blank is adapted to be crimped and pressed around the flange of a cup bottom 8, to form a base for the cup. One face of the arcuate margin 3, is also adhesived to permit the same to be glued to opposite faces of the flange of the cup bottom 8. The long arcuate edge 2, of the body blank is adapted to be rolled outwardly to form a drinking head or rim 9.

When a cup is formed out of a cup body blank 1, and a cup bottom blank the extension 6, is positioned within the cup body as illustrated in Figure 3, and is slightly deflected inwardly away from the inner surface of the cup body and serves not only as a suitable means for gripping the cup body blank during the formation thereof, but furthermore acts as a separator to separate one cup from another when cups of the type described are nested in a stacked relation.

Figure 4, illustrates a modified form of cup body blank 10, of segment shape provided with a convex edge 11, and a concave edge 12, shorter than the edge 11, and substantially parallel therewith. The arcuate edges 11 and 12, are connected by a pair of converging strai ht edges 13 of the same len h with one of said straight edges provided with a pair of spaced extensions or tabs 14, to facilitate gripping of the blank outside of the boundaries thereof during the forming of the body blank into a frustum-shaped body around a flanged bottom blank to permit forming of a flat bottomed cup.

I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

A cup blank comprising a body having two arcuate edges of different lengths connected by two converging and substantially straight edges and an intermediate extension on one of said straight edges integral with the blank body and arranged to afford a means for gripping the blank to facilitate its formation into a cup, said extension being formed to lie in substantially a vertical plane at right angles to the top and bottom planes of the cup formed from the blank to reinforce the seam 0f the-cup between its ends and for aiding in resisting lateral distortion of the cup wall when the same is manually grasped for use.
