IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELOPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 180,206, dated July 25, 1876; application filed November 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH CHAPMAN, ot Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque, and in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, which is fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing, in which Figure l represents the blank when cut from the paper; Fig. 2, the same partially folded; Fig. 3, the envelope complete and ready for use. Fig. 4 shows the method of' securing the envelope. Figs. 5 and 6 represent a modification in the cutting of the bla-nk .and folding thereof; and Figs. 7,8, 9, and l0, another modification, adapting the envelope to a special purpose.

The object of' my invention is to provide an envelope for railway and commercial purposes to be used without sealing, and at the same time sufficiently securev to protect the contents.

My invention consists in cutting and folding the blank, as hereinafter described, to make an envelope with a pocket, into which a strip of' the fap may be turned to close the mouth; but the pocket, las a distinct-feature of invent-ion, is not claimed in this application, as it constitutes the subject-matter of a separate application filed at the same time with this.

In the drawings, A represents the front of vthe envelope; B, the back; C (l, the end pieces,

and D the ap.

In folding the blank to make the envelope the back is first turned over upon the f'ront along the line a, and the end pieces are then folded upon the back along the lines c c, in which position they may be pasted. The strip B of the back B is then turned back along the line b and pasted to the end pieces,as seen in Fig. 3, which leaves the envelope ready f'or use.

When it is used, the papers, te., to be transmitted having `been placed therein, the flap is turned down along the line d, and a narrow strip thereof', D', is folded along the line d and tucked under the fold B, as seen in Fig. 4, but without gumming or pasting of' any kind whatever.

In Figs. 5 and 6 a slight change in the form of the blank is shown, and in folding the end pieces are turned over upon and pasted to the outside of the strip B. Ihe flap and end pieces are also cut so as to make a close joint when the envelope is completely folded, as seen in Fig. 6. This envelope is designed especially for use outside of' the mails for the transmission of reports, &c., from agents of' railway, and other companies, and by business men generally f'or the transmission of papers, Ste., which it is desired to protect more carefully than when in a package without any wrapping.

1n Figs.7, 8, 9, and 10 I have shown a change in the relative proportions of the different parts, for the purpose of making a small envelope f'or the transmission through the mails of seeds, 85o., and in Fig. l() I have shown a modification which may be applied not only to this but all sizes of the envelope, and which consists in dispensing with the fold B and cutting the end pieces with their upper portions lengthened, so as to come together near the middle of the envelope, when, th'eir ends being pasted together, they constitute the holder for the tongue of the fiap, which is tucked under them.

lt will be readily perceived thatlthis invention is applicable to envelopes of all forms and sizes and the cutting and folding of the blank may be modified in various ways without materially' changing the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is- 1 An envelope f'or use unsealed for ordinary business packages, consisting of the front A, back B, provided with a supplementary fold, B', end pieces C, and flap D, having a supplementary strip or fold, D', these parts being folded on lines a, b, c, d, and d', substantially as described.
